Post Browns game thread......oh Fuck It!

There has to be a S in FA or on a practice squad that can come in and help. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Worley or DRC back there at times. It’s bad.

First off, Myles Garrett is damn good. Probably as close to K Mack talent-wise as there currently is in the league. No surprise that our rookie LT was beat on occasion by this guy. But I give credit to Miller for how he fought him every play and held up for the most part. No doubt he needs to get stronger and improve his technique, but its a pretty darn good start for the rookie. I am sure much happier having him at LT than Horseface is with his young first round LT who has a couple years under his belt and is meh at best.

Brandon Thorn (@VeteranScout) breaks down Kolton Miller: The Pass Blocker vs Cleveland

Spoiler: Not exactly positive

I charted every Kolton Miller pass pro rep vs. Cleveland minus screens. 33 were against Myles Garrett; 6 with chip help, 5 with inside tight end alignment help. False step hindered his ability to be in position to anchor, got walked back 6x. Beat a few other times:

Not a good game, but Garrett is phenomenal and it was just his 4th career start, so still being patient with his outlook. I don't think he has been very good overall (adequate) but better than his college film indicated. Here are the rest of his pass pro reps vs. everyone else:

Myles Garrett the run-defender is very good. Processing, play strength, size/length/AA. Uses all of his special traits to wreck blocking schemes:

That's what I was saying about giving up ground. He went backwards into the pocket so easily it looked intentional at times.

I follow Thorn on social media. He is pretty damn good at diagnosing OL/DL. With that said, he had a bad grade on Miller coming out and trashed him as a 4th rounder. Its gonna take more for him to eat his words and admit he was wrong. But most people realize if your offense is #5 and your putting up tons of yardage you're doing something right on offense. If your LT hasn't given up any sacks and he is a rookie in game #4 facing Garrett, C.Wake, V.Miller, Chubb and the nasty ass Rams defensive line... youre doing better than just adequate. How many teams want a 22 year old rookie LT who can be adequate his first four games vs murders row in a brand new offense etc?

Sure Miller got pushed back, we all saw that. That doesn't make his 33 snaps vs an elite DE in his prime a fail. Its just him learning what is asked in the NFL. We all know he is gonna bulk up and keep working. He will only get better IMO and giving up no sacks so far is a great foundation. He may have an ugly jump shot right now, but its going in

With 4 games in and the strength of the fronts he’s faced, Miller has exceeded expectations

Hated the Miller pick but so far it's looked like a good one. You can see the athleticism. He'll get stronger and his size 10lbs is easy to gain along with some power. If Parker can hold down the RT position and we run the same offensive system for more than a few years (which helps every o-line), that group should be set.

For me, it was more of an observation than a criticism. He's getting the job done and should only improve as he gets stronger. Can't really ask for much more than what he's given us so far.

When you think of how many top 5 tackles have busted, and how hard it is to get used to the pro game, he's done well. It's still a very important position. He sort of reminds me of Joe Staley- lunch pail, show up, don't worry type player. You get one of those with your first rounder and you've done well. Honestly, I've been more disappointed with the two starting guards.

You can usually tell if a player is cut out for LT. You survive there and get better or you're moved somewhere else. So far he has shown that he can get the job done there. It aint always pretty so far, but he's learning on the job. Imagine the crazy jump in competition from UCLA to Myless Garrett and Von Miller in the first few weeks. New OL, QB cadence, new plays and way more focus on football. Being a rookie in the NFL is tough and people always shit on rookies like they should all have seamless transitions.

Im impressed so far. Not gonna say he is some Joe Thomas type, but if he can quietly hold down the pivotal LT spot without causing much drama, thats a great draft pick. We all know Carr needs to be kept clean to be effective.

Id be more worried if he couldn't protect the edge. Right now he's getting bull rushed more than usual because guys cant beat that length and athleticism outside. He is a huge dude, so I'm thinking he will learn to bulk up and eat that bull rush over the next few years. That will also help in the run game. He's shown the feet and agility to get outside and to get to the second level, he just is a little goofy finding the blocks still. He isnt grabby or getting called for wild holds tho. He just looks a little jittery and sloppy protecting the inside and on bullrushes. That false step is almost gone and he improved his base (staying upright and not leaning so much) Def has work to do, but being able to kill the speed rush outside at LT is a great thing to have going for you. He's relying on those long arms and quick feet to catch outside rushers. Once his technique improves, he won't need to "catch up" - then he will really be a pain in the ass to beat outside. That will kill any pass rusher who isnt strong hopefully.

As others have said, it's looking like a good pick. He's not perfect but you can tell he just belongs there. It was the right move to start Kolton and move Penn.

IDK, but watching these cut-ups it looks like Miller did even better than I thought he did. His pass protection was pretty damn good. He flat out won about 26 of the 33 pass rushing snaps vs Garrett. Got walked back a few times, but only a couple snaps that I would consider as losses vs Garrett. And all of his pass pro against non-Garrett rushers looked like clear wins also. Run blocking was a little different story... not sure how he did as a whole since there were only like 6 run play cut-ups that were posted vs Garrett, but no doubt Garrett dominated on these snaps.

He got "walked back"?... GTFOH... thats a win Alice... if guys are running by him you worry..

Not if he gets walked back into the QB, or it leads to a run getting blown up.

If your left tackle is getting overpowered like that, frequently, you gotta be one generous ass, grading on a curve ass professor to call those plays wins.

He wasn't getting pushing into the QB though. You can see that he just does't have the functional strength yet to deal with a guy as strong as MG. However, he has the athleticism to take the initial blow and reset his feet before allowing the defender to drive him right into the QB. I was actually impressed with how he held his own against a stud like MG.

Can't remember if this was posted already, so...have some Brandon Parker.

...talking about Brandon Parker.

If we can trust Parker to keep Carr from getting killed (and it looks like he can do that), we should start him immediately to get as much OJT as possible for next year, when we may actually be better. I don't see any benefit in giving Penn more snaps at the expense of Parker developing.

I think Worley might help a bit more than we expect.

If bringing him in kicks Conley into the slot for a few more reps I think its a big upgrade. Or maybe we can play one of our horrible safeties for a few less reps on 3rd and long?

Fuck its ridiculous that we have drafted 2 early safeties and its still such a glaring weakness.

Looks like we got no choice now with Penn going to the IR.
