I'm in the mood to get all Birdwellian up in here.
Roster assessment, just because.
On the Decline
Shane Lechler - Could easily fit into the "Rock Steady" category, but 36 years old is still 36 years old. Knee surgery at his age could signal reasons for concern. Also have to consider his free agent status after the season and how it pertains to the new regime's plans. He may very well be kicking 60 yarders at 60 years old, as HB mentioned. But, all things considered, I do have my concerns...centering more around McKenzie than Lechler, I'll grant you. But concerns nonetheless.
Cooper Carlisle - This guy's been halfway out the door since he signed here, but somehow keeps sticking around. Still appears good enough to start on a thin offensive line like ours, but at 35, you have to think the end is near. Let's hope our 26 year old rookie Bergstrom develops quickly.
Carson Palmer - A 32 year old QB with a history of arm and knee injuries, now playing in an offense that will have him rolling out and exposing himself to open shots on bootlegs. As much as some of us would like to pretend otherwise, he's not the player he was a few years ago. And at his age, I can't imagine he ever will be that guy again.
Richard Seymour - Our 32 year old, arthritic kneed defensive leader. As good as he's capable of being, he is prone to taking plays off, and one could even argue that his understudy Desmond Bryant could be a better player at this point. Premature, I know. But let's revisit that idea again after the season and see what we all think.
Rock Steady
Sebastian Janikowski - Two years younger than draft classmate Lechler and coming off a Pro Bowl season, I decided to stick Jano here. The groin injury is cause for concern, as is his 2013 salary ($3.8 million, per Spotrac) and cap number ($4.9 million). But I'm not quite ready to put him in the "decline" category. I don't think we'd elect to cut him as opposed to extending him to get those numbers back in line. I think Reggie understands the value of a guy who can score points consistently.
Jon Condo - Has been as reliable a longsnapper as we've had since he's been here, as well as being athletic enough to get down the field with the coverage team. Adam Treu was good at snapping the ball, but he was essentially out of the play afterward, hence his being replaced. At 31, Condo should still be able to give us a few good years of service unless McKenzie wants to trade him in on a bargain basement youngster whose minimum salary would be a few hundred thousand dollars lower. Seems foolish to me, though. No sense in dumping a good player for an inconsequential amount of cap space.
Tommy Kelly - Only a year younger than Seymour, but has been durable and playing the best football of his career. His cap number could see him called upstairs to discuss a restructure, but why wouldn't he accept? I can't imagine they would demand a salary reduction. The man is balling, and there's currently no one on the roster who can replace him.
Michael Huff - I'm going to overrate him just a hair and put him in this category. His 2010 season shows what he's actually capable of, and I really liked what I saw. His versatility is a huge plus for our defense. I'll put the O/u for combined sacks and picks at 8 for this season, and I'm taking the over.
Tyvon Branch - He may not pull down many interceptions, but he's the best SS we've had in recent memory. Covers TEs as well as anyone in the league, and is a strong tackler and blitzer. He's going to have a big year, with possible Pro Bowl consideration.
Good and Getting Better
Marcel Reece - The guy can play just about anywhere on offense. If Knapp has a brain in his head, Reece will manage close to 800 combined yards this season. He is currently our best option at both FB and TE, and should see a ton of snaps at both, as well as playing out wide and in the slot. He can really help offset our lack of experience and durability at WR, in my opinion. All he needs is to be utilized.
Desmond Bryant - Great height, solid frame, good athlete. I expect very little drop off from Seymour to this guy, if Bryant doesn't prove to be even more effective. A future full time starter, and a priority free agent.
Darrius Heyward-Bey - Still not a guy you want to throw many 9 routes to, but has really developed into a nice intermediate target. If he continues to work hard, he's going to have a long, solid career. I'm not sure how this change in offense and coaching will affect his development, but I don't believe he's reached his ceiling yet.
Lamarr Houston & Matt Shaughnessy - A really solid pair of two-way DEs. Both play the run well, and both can harass the QB. Houston's ability to play inside and out makes him especially valuable. Shags showed under Marshall that a defense with a lot of line stunts and loops and twists and all that fun stuff fits his abilities like a glove. We've seen this preseason that we're getting back to that, so I anticipate a big year from him. From both of these guys, really. If they don't combine for 15 sacks, I'll be disappointed.
Jared Veldheer - Already "rock steady", but also still has tremendous upside. He's not done developing as a player. With more consistency, and better play from his linemates, he could become a staple of Pro Bowl/All Pro lists.
Denarius Moore - Once that hammy gets right, I think this guy will pick up where he left off last year. He'll be our Andre Johnson. Yeah, I said it. I'm not comparing styles, but I am saying that he'll be our best WR and primary read on more pass plays than not. He is easily our best deep threat, and a damn good one.
Solid Contributors
David Tollefson - Absolutely nothing outstanding about the guy, and he's not going to get any better. But, he can play multiple positions, and thus provides us with valuable depth. He looks right at home in the DA/Tarver zone blitz defense.
Khalif Barnes - Imagine my surprise that Barnes has reached this level. I could even go so far as to put the guy in the "Rock Steady" category, but I don't want to get overly optimistic after one good season. He's looked good so far this preseason, though, so a degree of optimism certainly isn't out of place here. Will he be brought back next season? Hard to say, but I think he has a great chance. It's not as if there's anyone pushing him this year.
Matt Giordano - Led the team in picks last year, though he looked a little funny as a tackler at times. In this seemingly NFL style defense, however, I expect we'll see him played to his strengths and showing off his knack for finding the football. I believe he'll match his INT total from last year. "Book it."
Aaron Curry - Give this guy a big, fat, hairy asterisk. Who the hell knows what his knee is going to act like. But, if healthy, he could do alright for us. Might even be able to put his hand on the ground and get a little pressure. He's a decent enough athlete. May not have the moves, though. Still, as a WILL, we could do a lot worse. Hell, we've done a lot worse.
Frustrating
Jacoby Ford, Darren McFadden, Cambodia Jones - Stay healthy, ya fuckin' pricks! Dynamic, explosive, exceptionally fast, but just not durable enough for a steady NFL pounding. Not to mention that when Jones is in the backfield, the defense knows in advance that he's going to bounce it outside regardless.
Mike Goodson - I know you're better than this. Tuck the ball away, read your blocks, get your ass upfield. I get that the blocking isn't great, but you're not helping matters much.
Joseph Barksdale - I put him in this category because of how frustrating it is that we simply have no opportunity to replace him right now. He's awful, but Haslam is even worse, and I just don't think we'll be able to replace both between now and the start of the season. Incredibly frustrating. Pray to the football gods for the health of our starting tackles.
DeMarcus Van Dyke - Great camp, awful games. Can run with anybody, but hasn't a clue what to do beyond that point. Well, we knew he'd be a project. Damn shame we need him to step up so badly. Damn shame that Al overdrafted him so badly.
Young With Upside
Tony Bergstrom - He's not ready yet, but he could be by next season. Let's hope so. He may be a rookie, but he ain't getting any younger. The guy he's here to replace certainly isn't.
Miles Burris - If this guy settles down and learns to play under control, he can be really good. But, every year the waiver wire is littered with guys fitting that description. We may need him a lot more this year than we wanted to with Curry's injury situation. Let's hope he tightens up. He'll move into the "frustrating" category if he hasn't tightened up by this time next season.
Jamie Cumbie - Had the chance to lock down his roster spot tonight, but failed to show up. He's still a pup, and has tremendous size potential. I don't know if he's shown enough to stick, but I do think he's shown enough to get picked up if we let him go. Reggie has a decision to make here.
Stefan Wisniewski - Not overly strong or athletic, but solid all around. Should be a quality starting center if he can get his shoulder right.
