Common sense prevails. If Red PUP's Curry and puts somebody on IR, he can now protect 55 players. I wonder how bonafide the injury has to be. I could see stashing a rookie on IR and letting him get work and make his season debut midseason.

NFLPA agrees to later trade deadline, injured reserve exception
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 30, 2012, 11:55 AM EDT

In a surprise move, the NFL Players’ Association has agreed to the NFL’s request that the trade deadline be moved back from Week Six to Week Eight, and that one player per team can return to the field later in the season after being placed on injured reserve.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the players’ union agreed to the rules changes today, just a week after the union was saying no deal because the league was trying to tie those rules to changes in the rules about padded practices. It’s unclear for now how the union and the NFL were able to find common ground on the issue.

The change means that the trade deadline will now be the Tuesday after the Week Eight games, instead of the Tuesday after the Week Six games. That could be great news for teams that suffer an injury to a key player in Week Seven or Week Eight and need to trade for a player to replace him. Detractors of the rules change have suggested it could encourage bad teams to give up on the season and trade away their best players for draft picks.

With the injured reserve rule, one player per team may go on IR early in the season and then return to the field later in the season. So a player who suffers an injury that’s expected to keep him out for a few months could go on IR but still play again. Steelers rookie offensive lineman David DeCastro, who is expected to miss about three months with the knee injury he suffered last week, could be a perfect fit for the new system.

Analysis: What will the Oakland Raiders' final 53-man roster look like?
By Steve Corkran
Bay Area News Groupmercurynews.com

The Raiders are on their way to Seattle for their exhibition finale against the Seahawks on Thursday night.

While they're relaxing, we're crunching the numbers, breaking down the tape and making sense of everything we've seen during offseason workouts, training camp and the first three exhibition games.

So, what better time to take a sneak peek at how the Raiders 53-man roster shapes up for the 2012 season?

We will break down the roster into three categories: locks, on the bubble and long-shots.

Locks are players who are certain to make the roster as of now, barring injury, trade or an abysmal performance Thursday night.

On the bubble players have a decent shot of making the team but shouldn't be tattooing the Raiders shield anywhere on their bodies just yet.

Long-shots is a sizable group of players unlikely to make the team as of now. For some of these players, their best shot of sticking around is in case of injury or by virtue of the practice squad.

Final roster cuts are Friday. Here's our best educated guess:

LOCKS

QB -- Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Terrelle Pryor

RB -- Darren McFadden and Taiwan Jones

FB -- Marcel Reece and Owen Schmitt

WR -- Jacoby Ford, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Denarius Moore, Juron Criner, Rod Streater and Roscoe Parrish

TE -- Brandon Myers, David Ausberry and Richard Gordon

OL -- Jared Veldheer, Cooper Carlisle, Stefen Wisniewski, Mike Brisiel, Khalif Barnes, Joseph Barksdale, Alex Parsons and Tony Bergstrom

DL -- Matt Shaughnessy, Lamarr Houston, Richard Seymour, Tommy Kelly, Desmond Bryant, Dave Tollefson and Christo Bilukidi

LB -- Rolando McClain, Philip Wheeler and Miles Burris

CB -- Ron Bartell and Shawntae Spencer

S -- Michael Huff, Tyvon Branch, Mike Mitchell and Matt Giordano

K -- Sebastian Janikowski

P -- Shane Lechler

LS -- Jon Condo

43 players are locks. That leaves 10 spots from the following players.

ON THE BUBBLE

QB -- None

RB -- Mike Goodson and Lonyae Miller

FB -- None

WR -- Travionte Session

TE -- None

OL -- None

DL -- Jamie Cumbie, Jack Crawford and Dominique Hamilton

LB -- Aaron Curry (likely to remain on the physically-unable-to-perform list because of sore knees), Travis Goethel and Carl Ihenacho

CB -- DeMarcus Van Dyke, Chimdi Chekwa, Pat Lee and Bryan McCann

S -- Brandon Underwood

K -- None

P -- None

LONG-SHOTS

QB -- None

RB -- None

FB -- None

WR -- Eddie McGee, Derek Carrier and Brandon Carswell

TE -- Tory Humphrey and Kyle Efaw

OL -- Dan Knapp, Kevin Haslam, Lucas Nix, Nick Howell and Colin Miller

DL -- Hall Davis

LB -- Kaelin Burnett, Chad Kilgore and Nathan Stupar

CB -- Coye Francies

S -- Curtis Taylor

K -- Eddy Carmona

P -- Marquette King

With that said, the odds-on candidates to capture the final 10 spots are: RB Mike Goodson, DLs Jamie Cumbie and Jack Crawford, LBs Travis Goethel and Carl Ihenacho, CBs DeMarcus Van Dyke, Chimdi Chekwa, Pat Lee and Bryan McCann and S Brandon Underwood.

This leaves the Raiders thin at linebacker, assuming Curry winds up on the PUP list. However, Tollefson is versatile enough to help out in a pinch, as he did with the New York Giants. Carrying six cornerbacks gives the Raiders better odds of finding one or two long-term keepers.

Also, carrying only eight offensive linemen isn't exactly ideal. Yet, Bergstrom and Barksdale are versatile enough to play multiple positions, as well on both sides of the line. And, the Raiders won't have any difficulty adding a player if the need arises.

It's also important to remember that the Raiders cut Giordano last season in reaching 53 players, only to re-sign him a few days later. This is just the next phase of the building process.

Wonder if Red is trying to do that now. NE is extending contracts left and right. If Red's not, what's he waiting for? Is he saving cap space to sign a FA to win now? Just expected something from Red after freeing up money by extending Branch and trading Murphy.

NE has tons of capspace- we don't.

Barksdale is versatile. Heh. Yeah, so was Matt Stinchcomb.

Barksdale is versatile. Heh. Yeah, so was Matt Stinchcomb.

I've always loved when they say that about crappy players. "But he plays so many positions!" as if sucking at 2 or 3 positions somehow makes him less shitty.

If Barksdale is a "lock" then I question whether I truely understand the definition of the word.

Shit like this is why I talk about Cork the way I do, and why the dumb shit twitter blocked me. Dude's been covering the Raiders for, what? 20 fucking years? And he's still a moron?

Stupid: You can't fix it.

It's amazing that he and Jerry McDonald have the same employer. They are such a study in contrasts. Jerry is smart, analytical, humble, thoughtful, even funny.

Cork is the opposite of all of those.

I'm in the mood to get all Birdwellian up in here.

Roster assessment, just because.

On the Decline
Shane Lechler - Could easily fit into the "Rock Steady" category, but 36 years old is still 36 years old. Knee surgery at his age could signal reasons for concern. Also have to consider his free agent status after the season and how it pertains to the new regime's plans. He may very well be kicking 60 yarders at 60 years old, as HB mentioned. But, all things considered, I do have my concerns...centering more around McKenzie than Lechler, I'll grant you. But concerns nonetheless.

Cooper Carlisle - This guy's been halfway out the door since he signed here, but somehow keeps sticking around. Still appears good enough to start on a thin offensive line like ours, but at 35, you have to think the end is near. Let's hope our 26 year old rookie Bergstrom develops quickly.

Carson Palmer - A 32 year old QB with a history of arm and knee injuries, now playing in an offense that will have him rolling out and exposing himself to open shots on bootlegs. As much as some of us would like to pretend otherwise, he's not the player he was a few years ago. And at his age, I can't imagine he ever will be that guy again.

Richard Seymour - Our 32 year old, arthritic kneed defensive leader. As good as he's capable of being, he is prone to taking plays off, and one could even argue that his understudy Desmond Bryant could be a better player at this point. Premature, I know. But let's revisit that idea again after the season and see what we all think.

Rock Steady
Sebastian Janikowski - Two years younger than draft classmate Lechler and coming off a Pro Bowl season, I decided to stick Jano here. The groin injury is cause for concern, as is his 2013 salary ($3.8 million, per Spotrac) and cap number ($4.9 million). But I'm not quite ready to put him in the "decline" category. I don't think we'd elect to cut him as opposed to extending him to get those numbers back in line. I think Reggie understands the value of a guy who can score points consistently.

Jon Condo - Has been as reliable a longsnapper as we've had since he's been here, as well as being athletic enough to get down the field with the coverage team. Adam Treu was good at snapping the ball, but he was essentially out of the play afterward, hence his being replaced. At 31, Condo should still be able to give us a few good years of service unless McKenzie wants to trade him in on a bargain basement youngster whose minimum salary would be a few hundred thousand dollars lower. Seems foolish to me, though. No sense in dumping a good player for an inconsequential amount of cap space.

Tommy Kelly - Only a year younger than Seymour, but has been durable and playing the best football of his career. His cap number could see him called upstairs to discuss a restructure, but why wouldn't he accept? I can't imagine they would demand a salary reduction. The man is balling, and there's currently no one on the roster who can replace him.

Michael Huff - I'm going to overrate him just a hair and put him in this category. His 2010 season shows what he's actually capable of, and I really liked what I saw. His versatility is a huge plus for our defense. I'll put the O/u for combined sacks and picks at 8 for this season, and I'm taking the over.

Tyvon Branch - He may not pull down many interceptions, but he's the best SS we've had in recent memory. Covers TEs as well as anyone in the league, and is a strong tackler and blitzer. He's going to have a big year, with possible Pro Bowl consideration.

Good and Getting Better
Marcel Reece - The guy can play just about anywhere on offense. If Knapp has a brain in his head, Reece will manage close to 800 combined yards this season. He is currently our best option at both FB and TE, and should see a ton of snaps at both, as well as playing out wide and in the slot. He can really help offset our lack of experience and durability at WR, in my opinion. All he needs is to be utilized.

Desmond Bryant - Great height, solid frame, good athlete. I expect very little drop off from Seymour to this guy, if Bryant doesn't prove to be even more effective. A future full time starter, and a priority free agent.

Darrius Heyward-Bey - Still not a guy you want to throw many 9 routes to, but has really developed into a nice intermediate target. If he continues to work hard, he's going to have a long, solid career. I'm not sure how this change in offense and coaching will affect his development, but I don't believe he's reached his ceiling yet.

Lamarr Houston & Matt Shaughnessy - A really solid pair of two-way DEs. Both play the run well, and both can harass the QB. Houston's ability to play inside and out makes him especially valuable. Shags showed under Marshall that a defense with a lot of line stunts and loops and twists and all that fun stuff fits his abilities like a glove. We've seen this preseason that we're getting back to that, so I anticipate a big year from him. From both of these guys, really. If they don't combine for 15 sacks, I'll be disappointed.

Jared Veldheer - Already "rock steady", but also still has tremendous upside. He's not done developing as a player. With more consistency, and better play from his linemates, he could become a staple of Pro Bowl/All Pro lists.

Denarius Moore - Once that hammy gets right, I think this guy will pick up where he left off last year. He'll be our Andre Johnson. Yeah, I said it. I'm not comparing styles, but I am saying that he'll be our best WR and primary read on more pass plays than not. He is easily our best deep threat, and a damn good one.

Solid Contributors
David Tollefson - Absolutely nothing outstanding about the guy, and he's not going to get any better. But, he can play multiple positions, and thus provides us with valuable depth. He looks right at home in the DA/Tarver zone blitz defense.

Khalif Barnes - Imagine my surprise that Barnes has reached this level. I could even go so far as to put the guy in the "Rock Steady" category, but I don't want to get overly optimistic after one good season. He's looked good so far this preseason, though, so a degree of optimism certainly isn't out of place here. Will he be brought back next season? Hard to say, but I think he has a great chance. It's not as if there's anyone pushing him this year.

Matt Giordano - Led the team in picks last year, though he looked a little funny as a tackler at times. In this seemingly NFL style defense, however, I expect we'll see him played to his strengths and showing off his knack for finding the football. I believe he'll match his INT total from last year. "Book it."

Aaron Curry - Give this guy a big, fat, hairy asterisk. Who the hell knows what his knee is going to act like. But, if healthy, he could do alright for us. Might even be able to put his hand on the ground and get a little pressure. He's a decent enough athlete. May not have the moves, though. Still, as a WILL, we could do a lot worse. Hell, we've done a lot worse.

Frustrating
Jacoby Ford, Darren McFadden, Cambodia Jones - Stay healthy, ya fuckin' pricks! Dynamic, explosive, exceptionally fast, but just not durable enough for a steady NFL pounding. Not to mention that when Jones is in the backfield, the defense knows in advance that he's going to bounce it outside regardless.

Mike Goodson - I know you're better than this. Tuck the ball away, read your blocks, get your ass upfield. I get that the blocking isn't great, but you're not helping matters much.

Joseph Barksdale - I put him in this category because of how frustrating it is that we simply have no opportunity to replace him right now. He's awful, but Haslam is even worse, and I just don't think we'll be able to replace both between now and the start of the season. Incredibly frustrating. Pray to the football gods for the health of our starting tackles.

DeMarcus Van Dyke - Great camp, awful games. Can run with anybody, but hasn't a clue what to do beyond that point. Well, we knew he'd be a project. Damn shame we need him to step up so badly. Damn shame that Al overdrafted him so badly.

Young With Upside
Tony Bergstrom - He's not ready yet, but he could be by next season. Let's hope so. He may be a rookie, but he ain't getting any younger. The guy he's here to replace certainly isn't.

Miles Burris - If this guy settles down and learns to play under control, he can be really good. But, every year the waiver wire is littered with guys fitting that description. We may need him a lot more this year than we wanted to with Curry's injury situation. Let's hope he tightens up. He'll move into the "frustrating" category if he hasn't tightened up by this time next season.

Jamie Cumbie - Had the chance to lock down his roster spot tonight, but failed to show up. He's still a pup, and has tremendous size potential. I don't know if he's shown enough to stick, but I do think he's shown enough to get picked up if we let him go. Reggie has a decision to make here.

Stefan Wisniewski - Not overly strong or athletic, but solid all around. Should be a quality starting center if he can get his shoulder right.

High Hopes
Ron Bartell & Shawntee Spencer - Both are 30 years old, and both have a lot to prove. If their performances in preseason mean anything at all, there's reason for guarded optimism. But, mainly, I just hope they play well. I think they have the ability, and I like that they have good talent in front and behind them. I think they're in a position to succeed.

Mike Brisiel - Hasn't exactly blown me away. Looks very much like the player his press clippings would lead you to believe he is: A guy who plays well on some snaps, but gets trucked on others. We may have signed the new Cooper Carlisle. But, nevertheless, like Bartell and Spencer, we need him to contribute and be a good player for us, so into the "high hopes" category he goes.

Philip Wheeler - Looks like a new man outside of Indi's Tampa 2. Fast, aggressive, appears to play well downhill and in coverage...I'm really looking forward to watching this guy become our best LB. Really should be in a higher category, but I want to see him shine in a real game before I buy in completely.

Rod Streater - Reggie's first "Everybody chill the fuck out. I got this." player. Camp is camp, and preseason is preseason, but I'm a believer. Our "commitment to UDFA" looks to have paid off in the form of a tall, fast, sure handed possession receiver. If Moore can't go next week, look for Streater to get the start over Ford. This guy is a keeper.

Rolando McClain - Belongs in the "frustrating" category, but I think the new staff can reach him and the new scheme will suit him. I genuinely think he can play like a starting NFL middle linebacker this year. I dare say I expect him to.

Juron Criner - He won't be this year's "Wow", but he's got a chance to be a good player. Showed enough in camp to lock down his roster spot, but will be at the bottom of the WR depth chart at this point. Could see most of his looks as a redzone specialist.

Other
Roscoe Parrish - He's a lock to make the roster. Or, maybe he'll be cut before I finish typing. Steve Corkran: He's a dummy.

Pat Lee - Should make the team due to lack of options, but is likely little more than a placeholder until we can upgrade the position next year.

Owen Schmitt - I was hopeful that he'd be more than what he is, but he's not. He's just a guy. If he makes the roster, it will be due to his familiarity with Knapp and to provide Reece a breather.

Brandon Myers, Richard Gordon, David Ausberry - A butcher, a baker, and a candlestick maker wouldn't be any worse of a TE group. Okay, I exaggerate. Myers sometimes shows that he has a role, but is better suited to a #3 role. Gordon has upside as a blocking specialist, but really needs to give up on this FB business. He just doesn't get low enough. Ausberry, I just don't see it.

Brandon Underwood - We need a 5th safety, I suppose. I guess. No, not really. I couldn't justify keeping him over another, equally unimpressive player. We're too thin at too many positions to hang onto a fifth safety who hasn't really demonstrated the ability to play the position. Then again, he's only 26. Maybe he can improve.

Travis Goethel - Looked like a guy who could man the MLB position pretty well as a rookie, but...nope. Looking like his only hope is that Reggie can't find anyone better on the wire this weekend.

Carl Ihenacho - Flashed some pass rush ability, but probably not enough to make the roster. I really want to see this guy make it to the practice squad. He could have some upside.

Bryan McCann - Looks like he's got a tight grip on the kick return job, though Reggie is clearly trying to do better. Until he does, though, I think McCann makes the roster.

Eddie McGee - Making the conversion from running QB to WR isn't especially easy, but could be worth the effort. McGee still doesn't have it, but he appears to have improved from last year. If nothing else, he could provide Pryor with a mentor when it comes time for him to go down this path.

Alex Parsons - Short of a last minute addition, he'll make the team by default. Not really what you want to say about a guy who may very well start some games for you this year.

Christo Bilukidi - He'll make the team as depth, but he's a long way from offering much, I'm afraid.

Chimdi Chekwa - He could be waiting for the turk. The kid is looking very Jeremy Ware-ish out there. May be too stiff in the hips to stick at CB. Could be groomed to play safety, though I doubt we'll be the team to do it.

Jack Crawford - His bum foot limited his opportunities to show what he's capable of. He'll stick, and he'll play. I just wouldn't expect much from him this season. Has the frame to bulk up to DT/odd front DE size, and that may ultimately be his best position.

Marquette King - Convenient injury. Maybe a little too convenient? If he clears waivers and goes to IR, and we keep him on IR rather than giving him an injury settlement, you have to think it's going to put a bur under Lechler's saddle. Could be an interesting situation to watch develop.

Terrelle Pryor - He'll never be anything more than 3rd string unless he changes position. That's my take and I'm sticking to it. As badly as we need an H-back/TE and a return guy, wasting Pryor's athletic ability on a position he's not equipped to play just seems irrational to me.

Just Waiting For the Turk
Tory Humphrey, Curtis Taylor, Hall Davis, Coy Francies, Kevin Haslam, Kyle Efaw, Collin Miller, Brandon Carswell, Chad Kilgore, Dan Knapp, Travionte Session, Kaelin Burnett, Lucas Nix

Lonyae Miller - Has the slimmest of slim chances to make the team based purely on lack of options. He's just too slow footed to be a legitimate option, though.

Nathan Stupar - This is a Reggie draft pick, so he has a chance to stick based just on that. But, if we're serious about ending the scholarship era in Oakland, Red has to let this guy go and try to get him on the practice squad. He may stick due to non-existent LB depth, but I have to think we'll be looking to upgrade prior to week 1.

Eddy Carmona - Could get a stay of execution depending on Jano's groin. Muscle strains can be some nagging sumbitches. Kid's got a good leg, though. He'll kick for someone.

Dominique Hamilton - Showed a little ability, but not enough to hang around. Might have decent enough tape to land elsewhere. If not, I expect to see him handed a set of taxi keys.

Derek Carrier - My size/speed guy. An Al Davis throwback kind of player. Al would have probably taken him in the 3rd round and moved him to TE, truth be told. A priority practice squad signing for me.
