***The Official 2012 Training Camp Thread***

Honest question because your 2012 Lil Al Champion is drawing a blank... Has anyone good been cut lately as teams get down to 53?... Your 2012 Lil Al Champ can recall a time when there were post June cuts to look forward to (Romo), but it seems like teams have learned to manage their cap to avoid having to clip someone that can help them...

There were a few vets (TE, LB, RB) some hoped Red would sign to come to camp. Just hasn't happened. Maybe it happens tomorrow or Sunday. We'll see. As to the cut to 53, that doesn't happen for some time, and typically is seen as affecting a few marginal players, but some who can garner playing time with a new team (e.g., Sterling).

Sure hope that's not a nice way of saying, cheap. :bugeye:

He may well be methodical and cheap. We'll see. After decades of complaining about an owner who overspent on players, are we already fretting that the new GM is underspending?

Sort of, but moreso missing opportunities to improve the team.

The Raiders Insider and Crossbones fanboy speaks:

Was just told by someone in the know that rookie Juron Criner will definitely sign and be in @Raiders camp by Sunday. 1st practice is Monday

Duh. Was there any question that these guys would be signed before camp opened???

Do teams cut their own TV deals during pre-season?

If pre-season TV revenue is shared, why would a team wait until Monday for their 1st pre-season game, and get penalized by the NFL 4 to 5 days to prepare for the season?

Just wondering what the tradeoff was in the Raiders agreeing to open on Monday night.

Vito fact check (but, yea, he'll be there):

Raiders sign a draft pick just in time for camp
Posted by Josh Alper on July 27, 2012, 6:48 PM EDT

The Raiders report for training camp in Napa on Sunday and they moved a step closer to having all of their players ready to report on Friday.

Albert Breer of NFL.com reports that the team has agreed to terms on a four-year deal with guard Tony Bergstrom. Bergstrom was the 95th overall selection and the first Raider selection of the process after they traded previous picks or used them in the Supplemental Draft to take quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

Bergstrom played tackle at Utah and the Raiders used him there during part of the spring, but it looks like he’ll be heading for a camp battle with incumbent left guard Cooper Carlisle. Bergstrom will have to learn a new position and a new scheme, which would probably leave him at a bigger disadvantage if Carlisle were more imposing competition.

With Bergstrom signed, fifth-round wide receiver Juron Criner is the team’s final unsigned draft pick. Criner’s agent told Vittorio Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle that there was no reason for concern about Criner being unsigned, but also said that there were no guarantees his deal would be done in time for the first practice of camp on Monday.

@Jason_Madson: Charles just stopped on a dime, cut to the outside. #ChiefsCamp

How do you fumble on non contact drills?

Tooth fans going batshit.. Their camp is going Keystone Cops

Cassellmania!!!!

The Chefs' D and running game are their hope.

Bergstrom signs and Criner about to (updated)

Raiders third-round pick Tony Bergstrom agreed to terms Friday and fifth-round pick Juron Criner will soon, and “will definitely be in by Sunday,” according to a person in the know.

Bergstrom and Criner were two of only five rookies still unsigned in the NFL — and the other three are all first-rounders (Justin Blackmon, Ryan Tannehill and Kendall Wright). What took so long? The issue seemed to be signing bonuses, as the salaries are already slotted by when you’re drafted, but a source said “it was never anything major.”

Bergstrom is expected to push veteran Cooper Carlisle at left guard, while receiver Criner – a media darling at offseason workouts — seems to have already locked up a roster spot with the trade of Louis Murphy to the Panthers.

NFL.com was the first to report Bergstrom signing on Friday.

Friday morning, Criner’s agent, Peter Schaffer, had said he couldn’t say for sure that Criner would report by Monday. But agents posture. And now Criner will be in by Sunday.

The Raiders report to camp on Saturday, we media types get coach Dennis Allen on Sunday and then the first practice is Monday morning.

David Ausberry Gates competes for new Oakland Raiders

Training camp is finally here. They allow tackling there and everything. Around the League will count down the top 30 position battles to watch throughout the preseason.

• Okay, so we got a little creative with this one. In making our original list for this top-30 countdown, we had so many Raiders battles that we decided to combine them all into one.

• The Oakland Raiders are such a fascinating team. There is plenty of talent, competition and change at every level of the organization. There is renewed competence in the front office. This is a transition year, but this team really couldn't surprise. Anything from 5-11 to 11-5 feels possible.

• Let's start our battles tour at tight end. The Raiders say they want to feature the position more, but they only have David Ausberry Gates, Richard Gordon and Brandon Myers at the position. Ausberry Gates has the most upside as a receiver. Gordon is more of a blocker.

• We don't believe the Raiders will win the AFC West because of their cornerbacks. Shawntae Spencer and Ronald Bartell are veterans that were cut for a reason last year. DeMarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa for the old Oakland scheme and didn't play well last year. This position is a grab bag, and we're not sure there are any right answers for coach Dennis Allen.

• Backup running back figures to come down to Taiwan Jones and Mike Goodson. Considering Darren McFadden's injury history, the Raiders should invest in another veteran for insurance. Cedric Benson has been mentioned.

• Matt Leinart vs. Terrelle Pryor deserved their own post.

• You could argue all three Raiders linebacker spots are up for grabs. Aaron Curry, Rolando McClain, and Philip Wheeler are the favorites to start. But Curry is unreliable, especially in pass protection. Wheeler is learning a new system after joining the team from Indianapolis. He's an average linebacker. McClain has been a big disappointment on the field and an even bigger problem off the field.

Travis Goethel could wind up starting at middle linebacker and competing for snaps on the outside. The same is true for fourth-round pick Miles Burris. This is a reboot of the Raiders. Don't assume anything.

David Ausberry Gates :pound:

Your 2012 Lil Al Champion laughed...

For the record before the accusations come in, your 2012 Lil Al Champion is certainly not Gregg Rosenthal and your 2012 Lil Al Champion did NOT contribute to this summation...

Your 2012 Lil Al Champion does think that our LB corp would present better in a 34 set as OLB Burris- ILB McClain- ILB Curry OLB Shaughnessy than they do as a 43 trio... LE Kelly NT Houston RE Sey

That would be quite the experiment.

4 players in new positions that they have never or rarely played.

Sounds like fail.

The only player I see that benefiting is Ro.

Denver and New Orleans rarely used 4 LB's last year, they went heavy on 43 and 3-3-5 sets. Not sure DA is a big proponent of 4 LB sets.

Not sure how this guy can predict 11-5 upside with this write up. By the sounds of it, I'm not sure why we should even play any games this year. :shakehead:
