Draft Grades

David Terrell the NFL prospect was great.

I don't think this is the insult we think it is.

Zierlein also had Edwards as a 3rd/4th round pick. And that's exactly where Edwards went.

I don't think this is someone you would rank in the 3rd or 4th round (Terrell's year by year numbers)

So which is it? Is Edwards a guy who will last 4 seasons and have 1 year over 415 yards receiving? Or is he a guy who is worth a 3rd or 4th round pick?
Agreed. Zerlein’s 3rd/4th ranking and Terrell comp is particular disingenuous b/c most other draftnicks downgraded Edwards due to his injury, which kept him out of the combine. So, what Zerlein is really saying is that Edwards had 2nd/3rd value even those he is Terrell?

Fuck you Red!

FO just took a view of the last decade in terms of draft capital vs draft return. Here are some notable results for the Raiders:
  • 5-year average: #30 (79%)
  • 10-year average: #23 (94%)
  • Best year (‘14) rank: #13/320 (171%)
  • Worst 3-year stretch (‘15-‘17): #6/256 (64%)
  • Gruden’s rank (‘18-‘19): #20 (96%)
So sad that Red had a Top 5% draft in ‘14, then followed it up with a Bottom 2% 3-year run as GM. In terms to total return the last 10 years:
  • Mayock ‘19: #5 (Top 10%)
  • Gruden ‘18-‘19: #8
  • 5-year average: #19
  • 10-year average: #19

Copy pasta from the other thread:

Ruggs: B+ , more I read/see, the more I like this pick.

Arnette: D+, up from F. Do not like this pick, mostly due to who and what we passed up on, opportunities to trade down. Hope I am wrong but Mike "picking for need is a mistake" Mayock did exactly that.

Bowden: B- , not sure how he fits in what we're doing. Not particularly sudden, fast, big.. who is this guy? B level grade because I trust our staff to dial up gadget plays for him.

Edwards, B- , if injuries clear up and he sees the field might just beat out all other players for 2nd WR slot. Risk/reward, I'll take it.

Muse: B-, Jon Exotic gets another tiger. Crazy fast for a LB, probably another one taken a bit too high. Special teams and TE covering specialist?

Simpson: A+ looooooove this pick (my lil Al in 3rd!). Big ass guard. #beaf

Robertson: B+ , Scrappy ass dude, skills, just smurfy or would have been a much higher round dude.

Overall: B and may wind up being higher if I get less salty about our first round decision making. Saw someone call Gruden "Jon Exotic" and it made me laugh. So, that's his name now

Thought it would be interesting now that our final 53 is formed for the most part to revisit this.

Ruggs, A .. love this kids work ethic, has shown off some really nice ball skills, he is way more than I thought. Very happy he is on our squad.

Arnette, B+ .. I am less salty about this now than I was, all reports indicate he is doing awesome. Still would have preferred LB

Bowden, D (only because they immediately cut bait and recovered SOME value for the guy) .. not sure why I even called that a B- at the time of the draft given that I had no idea what the hell he was going to do for us. Guess I was giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Edwards, B- .. still feel the same about this kid. If he contributes significantly then I'll be thrilled.

Muse, D .. not a total flame out but clearly isn't going to contribute on ST or learn on the job if we're stuffing him into IR. Meh.

Simpson, A .. love me some BEAF. Happy he showed enough to make the squad, hoping he continues to grow into a starter.

Robertson, B+ .. love the reports, love the upside still of this pick. There's enough depth ahead of him where there won't be that much pressure to step in right away.

Overall.. C+ ?

If Ruggs, Arnette really shine, hard to be mad about the draft just on that basis alone.. gets this up into the B+/A- area. If we get meaningful contribution from the rest of the remaining guys this pushes us up into that A+ 2019 range.

Largely agree with your takes, except (a) I’m an Edwards fan, (b) I’m not a Simpson fan, and (c) I give Mayock’s draft a higher grade.

Two A's, Three B's and Two D's...shouldn't that be closer to a B- than a C+?

I mean, it's close, but those last two at the end I think have a bit less weight for being mid/late picks.

Would be interesting to see who we were collectively banging the table to draft and how they're actually doing.
That’s what the redrafts are for.

The biggest problem with our drafts is that afterwards the only banging is our heads against the table.
Don't forget about Bonnie Rotten. I'm sure there's plenty of banging happening there too.
