People say GB model, I think it's closer to KC with Smith/Mahomes.

KC went 11-4 and Smith made the pro-bowl the year they drafted Mahomes.

Their defense was worse in worse shape than Atlanta's is now and they traded up for a QB anyway.

Merit there.

People are saying Green Bay since the Falcons GM specifically cited GB's model.

Actually, KC had the 7th best defense in points when they picked Mahomes. Then it declined to 15th in 2017 and 28th in Mahomes' first year. Which led to Sutton's firing and Spags' hire and their current elite defense.

Sutton coached Army's 10-2 team in 1996.

Smith didn't just sign a 4 year 180M deal in the offseason though.

KC has signed him for what was a pretty hefty contract at the time plus given up draft capital to get him.

He had the 13th highest cap hit at the time, Cousins is 14th next year.

Smith was 3 years into that contact when Mahomes took over, Penix will likely be around that.

You're right, I filtered the wrong end haha.

Like I said coming back from an Achilles injury, ain’t no joke.I want to say 2/3 make it back to ever play again. Of those 2/3 only like 20% ever come back to play at a high level for an extended period of time. I think Marino is one of the QB’s who made it happen. We have 2 QB’s that are dealing with the same injury in Cousins and Rogers one or both of them will not play near the level they once did. It’s gonna fuck up their throwing mechanics big time. Well worth the investment to draft Penix. There is zero way to know how Cousins will react when bullets start flying and if his leg holds up. Studies show he has about 20-40% of the power he had before in that calf now. It can take 2-3 years to fully recover.

There's also no way of knowing at the time of signing how the draft would fall. I don't think we planned on taking Bowers but the value was there, just like I doubt GB planned on taking Rodgers at the time.

Just my opinion on team building. I like Cousins. I like Penix. If I would've known we wouldn't have had a QB drop to 13 or couldn't have traded up for Daniels I would've given Kirk the contract and rolled with him. If Penix dropped to 13 I would've taken him (I wouldn't have traded up for him). But to give a 4 year 180M contract AND use the 8th overall pick on two new QBs to your team... just not in favor of building a team that way. We'll see how the Falcons look the next few years.

"If you have 2 QBs you have 0 QBs"

bet they can trade Cousins next year if they want, maybe to us
it'd basically be a net wash for them cap wise. However they do have a lot of space, so it may be worth it. 2026 seems to be the trigger point. His roster bonus is due the 5th day of FA and they'd free up 32.5MM.

If you're worried about that you don't sign him to a 4 year 180M contract and use that money on talent to surround the QB you're drafting 8th overall...
Yep that’s why I say the fuck up wasn’t Penix the fuck up was Cousins at that price.

If 100 players got the same injury 33 would never play again. 66 would try and only 13 would be able to regain their form. Very high risk IMO especially at that price

Wouldn't you want to surround your $180mm QB with as many weapons as you can? I would have thought Bowers would have been the most logical pick for them. They could have taken a flyer on Rattler later on and let him sit behind Kirk. Not the #8 overall pick.

We all have been there. Haha. PFR is my addiction of choice. :D

Unfortunately for us, Fat Andy didn't give Sutton another chance. Instead, he acted decisively and hired Spags.
