When it was all said and done Sunday afternoon, Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther tossed Jon Gruden the game ball for his first win in his second stint as coach with the Raiders. Gruden was clearly touched and then told the whole team that they were all getting game balls.

And why not. It was a huge win morale-wise, to avoid an 0-4 start, and they had all worked very hard. The 92 offensive plays by the Raiders marked just the fourth time since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger the club has tallied at least 90 offensive plays in a contest.

Lynch’s legs were still pumping as he spun out of a tackle and took off down the sideline. But the official had called the play dead after only a 6-yard gain, and Lynch was mad enough he punted the ball away.



But Lynch has been running violently all season, and his production has been hidden by some bad breaks and limited usage, as we wrote earlier. He finished with 130 yards rushing on 20 carries Sunday and three catches for 27 yards.

“He runs so hard,” center Rodney Hudson said. “We just try to get him to the second level and finish with him. He never goes down, so as blockers you have to continue to push and battle.”

Lynch actually pushed his offensive line after a sluggish start Sunday, gathering them and other players on the sideline for a colorful pep talk.

“Marshawn only talks when things go really bad,” defensive end Bruce Irvin said. “I’ve seen him rally the guys together a couple times in Seattle but, when the ‘Beast’ needs to say something, he’s going to say it. It obviously worked, because we got out of here with a win.”

Offensive snaps: Time for a changing of the guard at right tackle?
Right tackle Donald Penn, who has struggled at times this season, left with a leg injury and rookie Brandon Parker wound up playing 57 snaps.

Gruden was proud of the third-round pick.

“That was a great effort by our team,” Gruden said. “We got a lot of contributions from people that didn’t expect to have the type of day that they had. I thought Brandon came in, a rookie off the bench and played really good football for us at right tackle. There were a lot of peaks and valleys in the game. We finished today.”

Doug Martin only played six snaps, running five times for 11 yards. Gruden wants to get him more involved but Lynch has just been too good.

Gruden on the lift that Lynch gave the team:

“It’s big. We did not run very good for a while. … We got stuffed on third-and-1. It was hard. Cleveland did a great job giving us loaded boxes, a lot of movement up front, but we were persistent. We had some big runs when we needed them.

“Lynch is unbelievable. What a great competitor. I thought Jalen came in and made some big-time plays for us in the two-minute drill. But, when you have some balance and you can get the third-and-mediums, then you can call some plays that are aggressive.”

This one actually may be true. The coaching staff changed up last week’s practice schedule after it thought that players had looked tired down the stretch in Denver and Miami. (The temperature also obviously played a factor.)

Veterans Johnathan Hankins (two fumble recoveries) and Frostee Rucker played the most snaps (about two-thirds) on defense, while rookie P.J. Hall was eased back in with 19 snaps in his first game back from an ankle injury.

Irvin seems locked in to a little less than half the snaps every week, and he had one sack and just missed another.

Defensive snaps: Will Gareon Conley lose snaps now that Daryl Worley is back from suspension?
Conley started off strong with an interception return for a touchdown, but his tackling issues lingered and he was burned badly late on a 59-yard catch and run across the middle by Antonio Calloway. Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie played for him after that, and Conley, last year’s first-round pick, could be the most affected by Worley’s return.

Erik Harris really struggled, missing a lot of tackles, and may not be ready to take over for Reggie Nelson at safety. Sorry, Raiders fans.

Hurst had a good game..

Following a 45-42 win, defensive players usually aren’t the first to receive praise, but Oakland Raiders rookie defensive interior Maurice Hurst was an exception to the rule in the team’s shootout victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

The former Michigan standout recorded a career-high 90.5 overall grade, which led all Oakland defenders by a significant margin and ranked third among all interior defensive linemen with at least 25 defensive snaps in Week 4. Hurst also earned a 77.5 run-defense grade and 87.6 pass-rush grade, ranking 11th and fourth, respectively, among qualifiers.

There was brutal officiating on both sides of the ball yesterday. Carr took a couple questionable hits which would have been penalties for Brady or Rodgers. We've gotten our fair share of horrible calls so I'm not even going to sweat it.

Be nice to get Parker some reps the rest of the season. Get him and Kolton battle tested for next season. Garrett was just a beast yesterday. Probably not many OT's that are going to have success against him.
 
Parker looked a little lost yesterday. To be expected. Let him play.

Carr is a matchup guy, hes not one to try and attack a good DB often unless he feels there is an advantage like height. See the Int 1:1 he threw in Miami where Bryant had like 5 inches on the kid. (He lost that battle)

This is one of the big weaknesses of Carr IMO, he allows the defense to dictate the game way too often.

Agree but I think Gruden is really pushing him to not be that way. By the end of the year Gruden is gonna have a nice green Chia Pet patch on Carr’s nuts. Week 4 and Carr dropped a fuck bomb on Amari Cooper walking off the field. He’s no longer coddled.....
