No one's disputing that.
Point is to not overrate a guy who played poorly enough for three straight years that no one wanted him. He was a FA during the season, you'll recall.
So based on his one partial season of decent play here, saying this guy or that one would be a downgrade is a bit presumptive.
Riley's 2016 season was way above his norm. Odds are, he'll regress to something closer to his norm next season.
I wouldn't consider a LB who's been consistently average the last few years to be a downgrade from a below average LB with one anomalous pretty good season.
Wager on trends, not outliers.
Im not sure just how poorly he played tho. What are those PFF grades?
@Sleet you got access to the Riley DC grades? I though he was average, not poor. I thought he was a liability against the pass but graded positively agains the run every year. That is consistent enough for me if we are only using him as a ILB in obvious run situations. We need guys like that too.
Also, if I sign a guy and he plays solidly for me. I give him another chance, not cut him? Reggie likely thinks he found some value nobody wanted. Again, I just think he deserves a roster spot, not naming him captain or anything!
If we can sniff Hightower without going bankrupt, Id be all for Riley being a back-up. If the kid from Florida is really worth pick #24, then so be it. ILB is huge void, I'm just worried this class of rooks and FA looks thin as hell. Riley is a solid bet to stop gap if so. Id rather roll with him and dump Nelson, Carrie, Smith, Ward, McGee, Dan, Jelly (who Ive seen people defense this same way) I feel like Riley was better than all those guys. So Im not throwing him on the chopping block until I fix those spots. The 25 sack pass rush, I use assets there before bumping Riley, just my 2 cents tho obviously.
I would maybe take a look at Klein from Carolina, maybe he learned watching their stud ILB.
