2017 Free agents

I really would LOVE for Reggie to try and find some LB's that can get in the mud and take on some blockers. Heeney and James running around everyone trying to make plays 5 yards down field got old fast.

This is why Im ok with Riley more than anything. Reggie has shown he doesnt like traditional LBs. Hell I've been clamoring for B.Fucking Spikes around here for a reason. Teams can run on ILB with no size. We should platoon a bigger guy in there on early downs minimal.

Never understood why Henney, James, Ball etc are asked to play ILB for the first time in the NFL. Draft/sign actual ILBa, I was happy with Riley because he is a ILB by trade with size.

3. Gerald Hodges, San Francisco 49ers (82.4)

4. Perry Riley, Oakland Raiders (84.8)

5. Kevin Minter, Arizona Cardinals (81.0)

Not sure what is so confusing to you guys? One rated higher than the other two. He actually played here in this shitty defense too. There are the numbers. I dont see how replacing him someone from a different defense, who graded lower is and upgrade...

You explain that. I've showed where Ive gotten that opinion from. I noticed the D playing better when he entered the starting line-up. PFF backs that up. Those other guys dont represent any upgrade to me. The draft would be a place to try, not FA. Hightower isnt coming here.

Per your own post, Riley was hot garbage three straight years before coming here. Let's not be so bold as to dismiss that.

I cant access those other seasons. But I know he graded positive against the run in 2011. I would be interested in seeing his run grades. He strikes me as a guy who plays the early downs well but need to be taken off the field in coverage. Altho he did play and grade well against it for Norton. Considering Reggie overlooked those three seasons and signed him, Im guessing he wont hold that against him now. Also, I have clearly said we can def upgrade this guy. But that was some of our best ILB play in a few years, so Reggie hasn't had much n here better than him. Im simply saying this guy has earned a roster spot and should be bumped out from the inside on the field. I give him a small 2 year pact and still draft or sign more talent. Worse case he plays all year and has an OK season again. Much better than Heeney, Ball and James who have NO business there. Im gonna lose my shit if some player who weighs 225 with no history at MLB steps in. I just think we should be careful in such a thin market. Dude did what Reggie asked, thats all he could have done this season.

L.Alexander played ST's here last year. Was one of the highest rated pass rushers with mad sacks this year at what age? Maybe Riley got a little better. Either way, I would like to see those Redskins grades tho

Could we agree he would be great depth considering what we have had here?

For what they were asked to do:

Riley > M. Smith

Carry on.

To not make an attempt to resign Riley would be dump unless we make a run at Hightower. Best MLB on roster last few years and probably by a good margin. With that being said, it should in no way deter us from seeking one in the draft as well.

No telling how the draft unfolds so at minimum having Riley gives us familiarity at that position. I would hate going into the draft knowing we have to get a MLB. I am not saying we still won't need one, just that if we took a Davis, Reddick, Cunningham. We could play them weak side for a year then move them over. If we get lucky and Foster falls you have a nice back up in Riley. If we get McMillan in the 3rd you gave a guy to learn from for a year. Either way having Riley around seems like a good call to me.

There may be something to this as the fatties up front are supposed to gobble up players so the linebackers can clean up what's left.
And teams are moving away from a lead blocker.

Agree, there's too much churn on this defense and the LB depth sucks ass. And Riley isn't going to break the bank either.

No one's disputing that.

Point is to not overrate a guy who played poorly enough for three straight years that no one wanted him. He was a FA during the season, you'll recall.

So based on his one partial season of decent play here, saying this guy or that one would be a downgrade is a bit presumptive.

Riley's 2016 season was way above his norm. Odds are, he'll regress to something closer to his norm next season.

I wouldn't consider a LB who's been consistently average the last few years to be a downgrade from a below average LB with one anomalous pretty good season.

Wager on trends, not outliers.

Im not sure just how poorly he played tho. What are those PFF grades? @Sleet you got access to the Riley DC grades? I though he was average, not poor. I thought he was a liability against the pass but graded positively agains the run every year. That is consistent enough for me if we are only using him as a ILB in obvious run situations. We need guys like that too.

Also, if I sign a guy and he plays solidly for me. I give him another chance, not cut him? Reggie likely thinks he found some value nobody wanted. Again, I just think he deserves a roster spot, not naming him captain or anything!

If we can sniff Hightower without going bankrupt, Id be all for Riley being a back-up. If the kid from Florida is really worth pick #24, then so be it. ILB is huge void, I'm just worried this class of rooks and FA looks thin as hell. Riley is a solid bet to stop gap if so. Id rather roll with him and dump Nelson, Carrie, Smith, Ward, McGee, Dan, Jelly (who Ive seen people defense this same way) I feel like Riley was better than all those guys. So Im not throwing him on the chopping block until I fix those spots. The 25 sack pass rush, I use assets there before bumping Riley, just my 2 cents tho obviously.

I would maybe take a look at Klein from Carolina, maybe he learned watching their stud ILB.

Id also be down with trading for the Eagles ILB on the trade block. But that will take some money/assets

Klein wants to start somewhere, but his old position coach is the DC coach in Buff so thats where I see him going.

It's weird to think we are close enough to contending that trading for guys like Sheldon Richardson and Kendricks would be smart decisions.

Al used to do that when we were a 4 win squad.

It took a while to interpret what he was saying. I used my @Sleet decoder ring and was able to decipher it.

What he was trying to say we already have two injury prone 2nd round picks don't add a 3rd.
:pound:

No, just a typo.
