Official 2013 Draft Thread - Day 1

I appreciate the idea of the draft value chart in nfl, but it really depends on the quality and type of players involved.

This plus the fact that everyone knew Red was desperate to trade down, not having a 2nd or 5th round pick and his guy been off the radar.

@caplannfl Jags want guaranteed starter at 33, if no trade. and they don't believe any QB is a lock to beat out what they have

I sorta feel the same way. Also, if we draft a QB this year, it makes us less likely to draft a QB next year, when we may be looking at better options.

Late Wednesday, it was leaked that the Oakland Raiders viewed Houston cornerback D.J. Hayden as one of the top players on their board. There was even talk of GM Reggie McKenzie taking the Houston cornerback with the third overall pick. Instead, McKenzie leveraged the No. 3 pick by trading it for the 12th overall selection and picking up the 42nd in the process. McKenzie, who didn’t have a first- or second-round pick a year ago, got the guy he wanted and picked up a valuable second-round pick for Friday in the process. Dennis Allen must have really had his eye on Hayden, too, as the head coach is a longtime defensive backs coach. Hayden’s story, an incredible one, makes for a wonderful narrative. There hasn’t been much buzz about Oakland’s offseason, but McKenzie has brought in the right types of guys since March. The types of guys who help rebuild a franchise.

Glazer said nothing about Lacy. If he does, take it to the bank he will be the pick. (if available)

That being said, if Geno is there have to think he will be the pick.

LaConfora and Zeirlin said we were choosing between him and DJ @ 12.

Would be a coup d'état to get our 2 top rated players at 12 and 42.

Jags or Jets may be after Geno tho, or maybe a trade up.

Geno in the second would be pallatable but not my first choice. I have a feeling he will be gone before we pick anyway.

I'm looking at Damontre Moore, Jesse Williams, Warford or Zach Ertz in the second.

We sorely need a guard- Warford would be absolutely perfect for this offense- solid mauling power guard-

NO TO GENO PLEASE!!!!

I think we need to look at TE or RB or LB or G, QB isn't good enough to waste a 2nd or 3rd on. Not this year!

+1

I'd really like an OL or DL player.

Round 2 possibilities for Raiders, Chargers
April, 26, 2013
By Bill Williamson | ESPN.com

The Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers are both in solid position in the second round, which begins at 6:30 p.m. ET Friday. Oakland has the No. 42 pick (via a trade with Miami) and San Diego picks No. 45.

Denver, meanwhile, is slated to pick 58th, fifth-to-last in the round, while Kansas City does not have a selection, having sent its No. 34 pick to San Francisco in the the Alex Smith trade. (There is some chance the Chiefs get the No. 54 pick from Miami if the teams can yet work out a Branden Albert trade.)

There are some good players available in the top half of the second round. Let’s look at some of the players who may fit with Oakland and San Diego, respectively:

Oakland

Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia

Manti Te'o, LB, Notre Dame

Tank Carradine, DE, Florida State

Margus Hunt, DE, SMU

Matt Barkley, QB, USC

Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford

Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M

San Diego

T’eo

Menelik Watson, OT, Florida State

Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas State

Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama

Terron Armstead, OT, Arkansas-Pine Bluff

According to the New York Daily News, the Jets will "take a good, hard look" at West Virginia QB Geno Smith on day two.
The Jaguars could easily make Smith the first pick of day two, or flip the No. 33 selection to the highest bidder. The Eagles (35) and Cardinals (38) are also possibilites. The Jets pick at No. 39. Smith looked miserable in the draft room Thursday, but should have something to smile about before the sun sets Friday evening.

Really like the Jarvis Jones/Pitt, Datone Jones/GB and Ogletree/Rams fits... Have a feeling a bunch of teams are going to regret passing on Datone Jones...

Agree...I thought those were the best 'value/fit picks in the 1st round. I really like Datone setter.

No upside & poor form for Dolphins to publicly brag about Raiders trade. Sign of insecure front office.

id love for Jordan to bust now

From Bill Barnwell at Grantland:

Trade Winners and Losers

It's hard to judge drafted players before they've played an NFL game, but we can do a decent job of judging the currency used to trade for those players. Chase Stuart of footballperspective.com built a nifty draft-pick value calculator using his findings for historical draft pick returns to try to measure the value retained by each pick. Of course, those figures are in a vacuum, and they don't account for the player scarcity or value available in this specific draft. So, as usual, the numbers will be a starting point, not the conclusion. Let's start with the first trade of the night, the Miami-Oakland swap at no. 3.

Dolphins acquire the third overall pick from the Raiders for the 12th and 42nd overall picks.
Quantitative winner: Oakland (which received 7.2 percent more pick value than the amount it gave the Dolphins)
Real-life winner: Oakland

The Raiders can't afford to choose between stars or depth. After gutting their roster over consecutive offseasons, they need to atone for their financial sins under the final days of Al Davis and begin to nurture the young talent that will become the next great Raiders team. They need more lottery tickets, and an extra second-round pick should yield another young starter for their roster for the next few seasons. Miami didn't pay an enormous premium to move up, but this was a move the Raiders had to make.

Everyone convinced we are taking a QB. I think we should draft Manti Teo and then sign Kerry Rhodes to fuck with Celtic
