Would Troy Smith be better for us than Brady Quinn?

What do you guys think about Smith's chances? I'm liking the Nips's plan I saw where we got Smith with our second rounder.

He throws a better deep ball than Quinn I think. Good athlete–not that Quinn isn't. He arguably comes up bigger in big, close games than Quinn.

He doesn't look much smaller to me than Drew Brees. I like that comparison I've seen. Hell, Brees even lasted to where we look to be picking at the top of round two. And if the D goes for Quinn No. 1 they won't be looking for him above us. (If things stay the way they are.)

Most importantly though it seems like he could be had later. Maybe we'd have to trade up to get into the bottom of the first round to pick him up, but still.

Quinn vs. Smith... I'm kind of torn and see the upside to both. Convince me one way or another.

These teams look to be drafting QBs IMO:

Probably: Detroit, Carolina
Maybe: Philadelphia, St. Louis, Cleveland, Houston (for whatever reason they just don't seem to like Carr; Kubiak is always on his ass there despite a near-70 percent completion rate; I could see them taking someone to push him)

Other than that I'm having a tough time seeing anyone else. Because even if some teams (Miami, Buffalo for instance) have somewhat sketchy situations they've made investments with guys and seem to want to stick with them.

I hadn't really thought about the Panthers before looking at a list of teams. I could definitely see them taking Smith in the middle of round one...

If we go Smith later (Which I am not opposed to) It will take a late first rounder,IMO.

People will learn from Brees and make a move to get a player like that earlier than expected.

A Fabian Washington like trade back into the early first round would do it, IMO.

I like JaMarcus Russell's potential too. He could be taken in round 2, IMO. At 6-5 250 and a rocket arm...Al might pull the trigger.

All I know is Brooks blows, and I'm not sold on Walter as a leader and a QB who can win the big one at this point.

Taking someone other than Quinn first overall would open up some better options for us going forward, but I'm just enamoured with the kids overall package of skills and intangibles.

Personally, I go back and forth on Smith... It seems like most of the time I do get to watch him, he's throwing from a pristine pocket... Pitch and catch basically... I like the mobility though... He doesn't have the arm strength or 'product of a run and shoot/spread offense' questions associated with Brees coming out... Last year, I thought Smith had the 'next Michael Bishop' written on him at times with his decision making process, but he's obviously improved on that...

I think in order for Smith to make it to RD2, either Brohm or Russell would probably need to declare for this draft... I think in addition to the teams you mentioned, someone like Baltimore could take him as a developmental hedge to Boller...


Right now, I'd prefer to follow up Adrian Peterson in RD 1 with either Zach Miller or Greg Olsen in RD2...

I want nothing but players who have been productive throughout college on the first day... Seeing a Nnamdi develop from athlete to player has been nice, but I'd prefer guys that are already more polished...

Lord knows playmakers won't want to sign up and play for the worst offense. Ever.

Wide receivers like Dwayne Bowe, Jason Hill, Johnny Lee-Higgins or even Steve Smith could be had with a mid round pick and take the place of one of our 'Superstars'.

I hate talking draft in November and December.

I prefer the free agent route for O-linemaen as well, but with centers the picking is slim.... Unless a guy like Damien Woody frees up, the free agent center offerings consist of basically just Andre Gurode.... To get him to leave Dallas for Oakland, he'll probably want LeCharles Bentley money with the way things are going with us...

I've watched a few games this year, and I can tell he isnt as athletic or dynamic as Merriman. He's good, but he is no Shawn Merriman, IMO.

Personally, I think he fits as a 3-4 OLB the best, and wouldnt have a set role for us...

Even if he's 6'1 and drops to the second, I don't see Smith as meeting the QB criteria for a high selection from the Raiders' organization. He's not the total packgage from a measurable stand point; he's too small.

That said, I would love to see the Raiders trade down to the middle of the first to select Smith or select Quinn #1. We need a modern day game manager with at least some mobility to side-step the rush.

I' hearing that Smith's stock is rising some and the probability is that someone will select him in the 1st round. Likely in the bottom third of the 1st round. I don 't see him dropping in to the second round. Even Big Hair is saying this stuff!

If Schaub and Leftwich are moved before the draft and Russell and Brohm declare then some QB, maybe more, could fall to the 2nd.

Smith's going to peak at the National Title game when he can let his performance on the field speak for his physical shortcomings. Once that game is over, however, we're going to see all sorts of questions about height, delivery, translating to the pro game, etc.

We saw the same thing last year with Vince Young... after the NC game he was widely thought to be a possible #1 overall pick. Then the questions about shotgun offense, taking a snap from center, reading progressions while dropping back, the Wonderlic, etc. all hit at once and he was suddenly dropping out of the top 10 and speculated to the Ravens at #13. However, his private workouts were great and he got back into the top-5.

IMO, Smith doesn't have the type of physical ability to overcome the questions that are bound to come up about his height and throwing motion. In January he'll be widely thought of as a mid-1st. By April? I think he'll be in that high to mid 2nd round range.

Drew Brees is barely 6 feet tall. And he looks like the only other MVP option than LT. Troy Smith is going to light up Florida and his draft stock will be Mid- First. He is very well spoken IMO and seems pretty bright. He has a chip on his shoulder from being doubted by everyone, and you can see it when he plays. I think he will fall to us in the second round when it is all said and done. Im not jumping on that bandwagon just yet, but a mobile QB who is a proven winner wouldnt disappoint me in round 2. Because we could always move him to WR like another player we all love, Ronald Curry. Maybe I am on the round two bandwagon, I guess it all depends who is there at the time. Michael Bush would be nice also.

We should trade Moss and some picks to move into the first round. Select Calvin Johnson, Jake Long and Troy Smith in Rd2. Then draft a C and a D-End in 3 and 4. Then we should sign either Steinbach/Manuwi/B.Waters/L.Davis, Eric Johnson and/or Graham and Michael Lewis. Then and trade a 3rd or 4th for Haynesworth if he doesnt get cut. Michael Lewis could be used to allow Huff to Roam the field and play his hybrid FS/SS position. StuSwagg could come in on obvious passing downs. Give Gallery one more shot at LT with slaughter waiting in the wings, and Grove one more with a Rook behind him. I also wouldnt mind replacing Sam Williams with AdaliusThomas, Briggs or Paul Pulznuskyzyz. We obvioulsy cant make this many moves, but a combination of some of these should happen. This is going to get old soon... the Raiders need to give us something else to talk about, like a AFC west win.
