BRONCOS WANT JOHNSON

A reader tells us that there's a rumor being reported on 950 AM in Denver that the Broncos are trying to make a play for the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, in an effort to land receiver Calvin Johnson.

A source with knowledge of the discussions tells us that the rumor is dead-on accurate, and that an offer has been made by the Broncos to the Lions.

Per the rumor and based on what we've heard, the Broncos have offered their first-round, second-round, and third-round pick in the 2007 draft and their first-rounder in 2008 for the No. 2 spot.

The Lions, we're told, are concerned that the No. 21 overall spot would put them too low to land one of the players whom they covet. The Lions' goal in trading down is/has been to get more picks, and to still get one of the players they want, but at a lower salary slot.

So the deal might hinge on the ability of the Lions to line up another deal that would allow them to move back up a bit.

The Broncos hold the No. 21 overall pick in round one, the No. 56 overall pick (No. 24 in round two), and the No. 70 and No. 86 overall picks (No. 6 and No. 23, respectively, in round three). We don't know which of the third-rounders has been offered.

Under the trade chart, the deal might favor the Lions. But different teams value picks from the next year's draft differently; some teams downgrade the points by a full round, making a 2008 first-rounder the equivalent of a 2007 second-rounder. The other problem here is that no one will know where the Broncos will draft in round one until the 2007 season ends.

The entire deal would be contingent on the Raiders not drafting Calvin Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick. We're currently told that the Raiders are expected to strike a deal on a contract with quarterback JaMarcus Russell before Saturday.

However, the fact that former Raiders coach/current Broncos coach Mike Shanahan apparently has a bee in his butt for Johnson could cause Raiders owner Al Davis to think twice about whether he would prefer to have Johnson on his team -- or to have to face him twice per year.

Oh yeah let that move happen and Al takes either CJ and then trades him to TB or swaps first with TB or someone else like ATL to move into the #1 spot to move down and then take a Quinn or even still take a JR at 4?.......wow would that be interesting......

Problems I see with this:

Man, logic and common sense go right out the window when people think about Al Davis, doesn't it? It seems perfectly logical to the boneheads over at PFT that Al would change the course of his franchise just to screw Denver, huh? Really, this is the worst kind of childish speculation:

"Heeey, maan, I could totally see the Raiders drafting CJ just so Shanahan couldn't get him......yeah, Al totally hates Shanahan, maaaan......"

Also, the idea that the Lions would only make the move if they had another trade up in place.....well, how often does this happen? It's very rare that teams trade down until they know who's available at their pick.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Denver made an offer to Detroit. It would surprise me if Detroit seriously considered it. Detroit can probably drop to #4, or #8, very easily. So why drop to #21, just to try and climb back up again?

I like the sound of the Denver/Houston trade much better. I could see Denver trying to leapfrog SF to grab Willis.

Denver is betting the house, ranch, car and Jr.'s new pair o' babyrat shoes on 2008. SD got Norved, will likely move MT and LT is due for an injury (gambler's fallacy I know, but I feel it coming). The Chefs are being Hermed (No O ine, PO'd LT, Jared, etcetera) and the Raiders will have yet to be entirely Kiffified (the bread will still smell good, but it won't be ready to come out of the oven yet).. The Dunks have got a good shot at the AFC West crown next year so Ratman Sr. wants to get into the top ten to get an impact player. His first choice was spot #2 and that didn't work. I'd wager they've made other offers to ther teams, but only the Houston one has been leaked. They know they will not draft high next year so giving away that #1 isn't soooo bad. They will not stay put at #21.

PACKERS MAKING A PLAY FOR L.J.?

Scout.com is reporting that the Packers have offered a first-round pick and a fourth-round pick to the Chiefs for running back Larry Johnson.

If true, the report is a stunner. Packers G.M. Ted Thompson doesn't like to pay big money to strangers to the team, and it's going to take really big money to keep Johnson beyond 2007, the last year of his rookie deal.

And if an offer that big has been made to the Chiefs for Johnson's rights, the Packers surely have reached a tentative agreement with Johnson's agent on a long-term deal. Otherwise, the Packers would be picking up Johnson for only one season before having to either use the franchise tag or let him walk away.

I guess Mr. Lynch would get to fly home at least one time each year.

Ahh the insane rumors around draft time. which one is true out of the 6,000!

Well that effect is subjective. Not really sure if its likely myself. but old grudges die hard in the afc west.

Apparently not the last one:

RUMOR OF GREEN BAY OFFER FOR L.J. IS OFF THE MARK

Though we've never seen a rumor that we didn't want to monger, we've learned based on discussions with league insiders and via the application of common sense that the Packers have not offered a first-round pick and a fourth-round pick to the Chiefs for running back Larry Johnson.

As we suggested in our short blurb regarding the Scout.com report that an offer is on the table, the deal makes no sense unless the Packers have in place a long-term deal with Johnson. But a league source tells us that no permission has been given by Johnson to talk to other teams; thus, if any discussions have occurred, it would be an obvious violation of the tampering rules.

Though it's not becoming more common for a trade to be worked out contingent on the new team and the player working out a contract, there's no way that the Packers and Johnson would get together on a long-term contract before Saturday, even if a trade deal were done right now between the teams. The Chiefs are quietly shopping Johnson due in part to the reality that he wants a deal worth more than the contract signed by 2006 MVP LaDainian Tomlinson before the salary cap spike of the past two seasons. There's no way that Packers G.M. Ted Thompson will ever agree to that.

Nor should he. Running backs are largely interchangeable. Unless a team has a chance to land the next Barry Sanders or Jim Brown, there's no reason to pay huge money to a player who is at any given moment an awkward hit away from becoming just a guy.

Larry Johnson is currently one of the best running backs in the NFL, but he's not one of the best ever. If he was, the Chiefs wouldn't be shopping him.

Dollar for dollar, the Packers would be far smarter to take their chances at No. 16 on Marshawn Lynch, or in a later round on someone else.

I think the ones that might happen are:

Briggs gets moverd to the Skins.
Moss goes to the Packers.
Culpepper gets dumped and is our back-up with Rattay.
Larry Johnson stays in Narrowhead.

Wow, that would certainly open up the Marshawn Lynch derby some, wouldn't it? Although, you'd have to wonder if the Chefs would pick him up instead.

Apparently Arthur Blank has major wood for CJ which was confirmed on the radio again today, so I expect Atl to make a major play to move into the #2 spot. Anything to cock block Denver would be ok in my book but I also don't believe that Al would sabotage a draft just to piss Shanahan off. If there's a guy he covets, he'll pull the trigger irregardless :D

Irregardless none of this makes any difference. Al is going to take Calvin Johnson and 'ya know what?...maybe it's the right thing to do. (Mass is gonna kill me)

I've been beaten into submission. Saturday -- get here!

Me too, me too.

I'm really starting to get a kick out of all these outrageous rumors. I've never seen so much off base analysis in my entire life. These GMs gotta be sittin' on some of these Internet sites, laughing there asses off.

Here is my overly simplistic analysis of what's going to happen on Saturday.

Denver doesn't have the ammo to move up to #2 to take CJ... nor do I think they have any interest in CJ. As much as I despise the rat, the way he crept up behind everybody's back and got Cutler tells me he's still a clever little rat. The guy he wants is Adrian Peterson and has been for a while now. If Peterson falls, we'll be facing him twice a year.

Al's taking Russell and nobody is going to dissuade him. Since getting all the attention of the #1 pick is more important than who he ends up taking, I don't expect a deal to get done any time soon. Al's just gotta be real careful right now. Up until the clock starts on Saturday, Al has all the leverage in contract negotiations with Russell. If Al doesn't strike a deal with Russell before the draft, then Al will lose every cent of that leverage. He better get this deal done before Saturday, or he'll end up taking it in the ass financially.

As much as Detroit wants to and is going to eventually trade out, they're best off drafting CJ and then holding Gruden at gunpoint for a trade. Gru is going to pay a King's ransom to get CJ once Detroit drafts him at 2.... probably as much if not more than we would have gotten had we traded down to 4.

Yeah, unless Detroit has the balls to actually take CJ, I don't know that Tampa is dying to make a trade. Who are tehy competing with, Atlanta? Maaaybe. But does Detroit want to drop that far? If I am Tampa, I'd dare Detoit to take CJ.

I could see Ratface moving up for one of the D-Lineman or Patrick Willis. Their offense is pretty much set for next year other than mayeb needing another WR. Branch, Okoye, Carriker or Willis would make that D real nice.
