Who should the raiders look to draft at QB?

Who should we get? (Explain how we get in comments if it needs trading up)

All I needed to find was one. :D

I haven’t seen no one on the Sam Darnold Jihad, I bet everyone’s against it? But I bet if he goes somewhere next year and does well, we’ll be looking back on it like it was a good idea. lol

I’ve brought it up. Honestly I’d sign him and draft a QB and let the best man win. If we’re handing credit out though, @Langlier brought him up prior to the season.

I really don’t want to spend the next couple of years with all of our eggs in the Milroe/Beck/Ewers basket either. I also don’t think Darnold is going to get anything more than a prove it deal.

He just did two prove it deals the last couple years. I bet its closer to Mayfield this time.

If Minshew can get 12.5 a year or whatever and Darnold got 10 this year I dont even want to think what he is in line for.

Funny the first google search had this:

  • Financial benchmark: Baker Mayfield ($33,333,333-avg./$50 million in guarantees/3 years worth up to $115 million with incentives)

Those weren’t prove it deals, they were backup QB deals. And I’m talking more about the length of deal and guaranteed money than the cap hit for a season. I think he gets closer to what Jimmy G got from us, adjusted for inflation. Baker got signed by the team he was already with and was historically better than Darnold. Sam is going to need prove that his only good season was the light coming on for him rather than the situation he was in.

Maybe. I mean Jimmy signed for 25 a year or something right? And I said 30? And google articles say 33.

Close enough.

I'll be surprised if a free agent QB like him in a draft like this one at his age doesnt have a salary starting with a 3 and a total contract in the hundred million range.

Should be interesting to see how it all shakes out. Hopefully its not us.

Ok, let’s just insert a reasonableness clause to anything I post. I’d sign Darnold. I would not give him a $100m guaranteed. Just like I’d draft Milroe, but I’m not trading a shitload of picks for the opportunity.

Well, that reasonable idea takes all the fun out of it.

I was thinking about that today.

So we have the 5th most cap space going into ‘25…so theoretically signing him wouldn’t be the issue. But the issue is do you think enough of him…to basically hand him the keys and then not draft a supposed franchise QB when you have the *ability* to do so.

The argument for doing so, IMO, would be: he’s still only 27 so he’s still in his prime-prime. He’s got the Vikings to a 10-2 record and has done it while having good stats to go with it (not just a glossy record because of defense for example). He’s spearheading that team.

But getting Darnold would give you the ability to draft Travis Hunter at #1 or #2 and now you’d have:

- Darnold as ur QB
- Hunter as your #1. And Hunter is..

  • Generational athlete with freakish fluidity and explosiveness, consistently showcasing elite traits on both sides of the ball
  • Ball hawk with uncanny instincts and route recognition, leading to game-changing plays and turnovers
  • Silky smooth in transition with elite hip flip and backpedal, allowing for seamless coverage adjustments
  • Sticky in man coverage with excellent mirror-and-match skills, consistently locking down top receivers
  • Natural hands catcher who plucks the ball away from his frame, making difficult catches look routine
  • Devastating route runner with crisp breaks and sudden acceleration, creating consistent separation
  • Rare twitch and lateral agility to make defenders miss in space, turning short catches into big gains
- Jakobi as your #2
- Tre as your #3

And…the best TE in football making your offense a mismatch nightmare. And you’d still have 3 more picks in the top 69.

Could we get Darnold that a lot of teams will be salivating over?

Well the pitch would be…we’ll match any teams offer and probably beat it with Nevada’s no state tax, and you’d have better weapons at your disposal than any other team that you would sign with. And you’d be playing for an iconic franchise in an iconic city, with the best facilities in the business.

Does he say no? Could he say no to that? Would we even want to go that route? Apologies for the length.

I get that Minnesota drafted McCarthy but why would they let Darnold walk when they are winning with him? Why would he want to leave when he's finally winning? I bet he ends up back in Minnesota. GB took Love and sat him for 4 years, it's not unprecedented.

Darnold, according to reports, is gonna price himself out of Minnesota with what he’s gonna demand on the FA market. That’s one of the reasons they got Daniel Jones. As a backup to JJ McCarthy next year…and as insurance if JJ isn’t quite ready. From ESPN:

ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler believe that Darnold is pricing himself out of Minnesota, and the team is comfortable with that reality (subscription required). Although a scenario in which McCarthy’s recovery takes longer than expected could tempt the Vikes to bring Darnold back, McCarthy is obviously expected to take the reins at some point, and Darnold’s price tag is likely to far exceed what the club is willing to pay given its investment and belief in McCarthy.

Only way I consider Darnold this offseason is if we win 1 or 2 games and we're drafting closer to 10 instead of top 3.
My guess is that will happen.

With the Bucs, Falcons, Saints and Jaguars, I would be surprised if Raiders don't win at least 2 of those games.

Let the hand wringing begin, whether Telesco will trade up. It's an annual event.
