Hey...

Seems like a lot of people here want to talk safeties. Why? Just for depth? Think Huff is a corner? Think Schweigert isn't quite good enough?

It seems like there's a lot of dissension about Stu's place with this team. Uncertainty.

Me, I'm fine with him. Sure, he could play the run a little better and be more consistent, but I like his ball skills and think he's a hard worker and the type of guy you want to turn this situation around.

I figure him as a starter for years to come...

i like stu and think if he takes his play up just a notch hes our starter for years... thing is i like huff in his spot a little more which means we need an SS... and much as I like coop we dont have a true SS on this roster.

Stu has gotten better every year and has done really well, despite being left out on an island playing center field most of the time. Could we have a better FS out there? Sure. Huff would be a much better FS. But, then we'd have a huge gaping hole at SS. With Stu being the least of our worries back there, I've got no problem seeing him start, goofy tackling form and all.

I've been back & forth about SS over the years. I think he's an average player at best when it's all said & done, but I could certainly be wrong here? He just doesn't hit hard enough for my taste and you really can't teach that IMO. (shrug)

You have to be able to drop the hammer on dudes sometimes and instill some fear. I don't get the sense that Stu has that effect on our opponents, though again, I'm reading into it from the comfort of my living room.

All that being said, he is around the ball enough, he does have good speed and he does enough things adequately well to warrant a roster spot.

I also think he's the least of our worries at this time. We have more pressing concerns, namely at DT, DE and various spots on Offense.

As for Huff, as much as I think he's a FS, you have to admit that TE's really didn't do that much damage against the Raiders last year, including Antonio Gates, and that is largely due to the play of MH. I think Huff is a special football player and the team will eventually be proven correct by drafting him. He's only going to get better IMO. Real stud, even if the 2006 "stats" didn't reflect it.

Besides, what's our option at SS aside from Huff? Cooper? Gibson? I'm OK with a secondary of SS, Michael Huff, Fabian Washington and Nmandi Asomughe. More than OK.

Huff single handedly solved 2-3 gaping problems our defense has been dealing with over the last few years. The inability to cover TE's, or to turn running plays back inside to the pursuit. (or play zone pass coverage).

He didn't show up in the stats (as you've said), but the dude was flat out flying all over the field making plays.

As for Stu.. did you see the hit he put on the Steeler TE, (Miller, was it?) last year? Abso-freaking-lutely lit the guy up. It was a monster hit that broke up a sure 20+ yard grab. Granted, it was the exception rather than the rule, but I think that with another year of this defense 'gelling', he'll be more comfortable cheating up and sticking some people.

I think he plays well enough to not be a liability but he also isnt a star. He seems like he has a very good attitude which is a great trait. I think we can afford to rebuild other areas of the offense until Stu's contract is up. Then maybe we move Huff and find the hitter for the secondary that we all want.

I'm also of the mind that Stu is pretty average. He's a step slow, and his tackling is sometimes a little...ya know.

That said, from the neck up, he's my kind of player. With a more consistant pass rush, he might make a few more plays.

I also still think that he could play SS. I mean, he's bigger than Huff. Get him closer to the line where his lack of speed and sometimes funny angles become less of an issue, and I think he'd do pretty well. Would he cover TEs as well as Huff? Alas, probably not.

So, I think we leave Huff where he is and settle for average at FS for the time being. We need a nickleback a helluva lot more than we need a FS at this point. Not to meniotn holes at OLB, RDE, and DT depth.

I think Stu is adequate and does make plays from time to time. but I'd rather have Huff at FS and then draft or sign a true SS. Troy Polamalu is a FA after 2007. I'd love to see us take a run at him. Obviously, re-signing Aso would be a priority but imagine our secondary with Huff, Troy, Aso and Fabs.

We're not going to be signing any free agents of that caliber for at least the next 2 years or so. The only way it happens is if Al finds some sucker to buy 1/3rd of the team from him and I can't see that happening.

IMO Stu is a below average starter. He always seems to be a step away from the play, and his tackling skills could use some improvement. He's not a crushing hitter or a ballhawk.

He'd be a damn good 2nd stringer, however.

I like Huff at SS and Sweigert at FS. No complaints at all. Our Secondary's improvement is directly connected to Sweigert's growth. He makes the reads and runs that secondary. His play hasn't been elite, but below average is extreme imo. Both guys(huff&Stu) have cut down on the amount of big plays we've given up and been a factor in the improvement of our CB's numbers.

Did you start this thread to piss me off?.....We all know I am always standing up for Stu ............
Look Stu will be better this year. Each year he gets better and better. Like Good player do. He is smart and gritty. He has got much better tackling and has started taking better angles.
He is the leader on the secondary. Many of the times where you saw him chasing someone down for a td or big play. It was due to the fact someone else made a bad play and Stu happen to be the only one back there. I think if Huff plays better this year which I think he will you will see Stu have the break out year I know he can have.

I dont mind Stu.

I wouldnt mind moving Huff to FS and drafting big ol Sabby Piscatelli from Oregon St. either...

Stu can always be upgraded, IMO.

Stu is currently an average FS. He can wind up being a good FS, but I don't know that he'll ever be great, or pro-bowl material.

Huff is a throwback at SS. He's definitely a Raider SS from the old days. He covers well, tackles well, fills the gaps. What are the problems with him at SS? He's not a BIG hitter and he is undersized for taking on the big backs.

But the Raiders like to flip responsibilities rather than flop personnel. So it's not surprising that we've got a slightly small SS and a slightly large FS who've both got speed. This combo fits the Raiders well. It's why Bing was moved to LB, he doesn't fit the Raiders mold (too slow).

I like Stu's play on the field - a perfectly servicable starter in the NFL who get's better, plays smart and has the speed to close (4.4 40). He's the backfield captain of the #1 pass defense in the league.

I love Stu in the locker room and in the community. Quality, character guy. Works hard, studies hard and is always in the spotlight (though, honestly, I wish I never knew about him remodling his kitchen).
He gets at least 4 picks in 2008.

I remember the days of Anthony Dorsett and Marquez Pope.

I ::heart:: Stuart Schweigert.

My attitude. There are few gamebreakers at FS, all I ask is a guy that's not making a ton of mistakes.

No one on our defense made a ton of big plays, aside from Burgess and Scrabble, in part because the opposing team rarely had to take any chances. Scrabble getting 8 INTs was a frickin miracle.

Rupert is right, as of now he's an average FS. I can live with that.

Truth. Preach it, brother Stepper.

I've always been a Stu Schweigert fan. In my opinion the dude can cover, hardly ever gets beat deep, and is improving in run support. He's a solid safety in the NFL. He looks even better with two good corners and Huff on the inside.

That said, I still am baffled by us not even taking a look at Ken Hamlin last month. He's one of the top free-safeties in the league and I love his game. He is now a Cowboy but would have looked awesome in silver and black.
