Right now I think enough hype has been spun for Calvin Johnson that... We trade with the Tampa Bay Buc to move down to #4.

The trade? #1 overall for #4 overall this year, #36 overall this year, thier 1st next year and thier 3rd next year.

Bucs take CJ
Lions take Joe Thomas
Cle takes AP/Quinn
we take JaRuss/AP/Quinn

worst case scenario?

Lions take Quinn
Cle takes JaRuss
we are "forced" to pick between Joe Thomas and Adrian Peterson... and set up for the next few years with a few nice picks.

I just see Tampa needing CJ enough to move up. They know if they don't that if we don't take him someone will leapfrog them to take him.

I could dig that for sure.

I'd be bonerized for weeks if we traded down and still got Russell-Quinn with an extra top 50 pick...

I think your worst case scenario also happens to be the most likely scenario should that trade go down... I just don't see anyway the Browns pass on a QB at 3... The way Savage reminisces about Russell at age 11, I don't think he'd pass on him if he had the chance to pull the trigger, and should he be gone, the hometown boy Quinn seems like the choice when you include the relationship between Crennell and Charlie Weis...

The key is the Lions... if they go ahead and take Joe Thomas, that pretty much guarantees we'll walk away with Brady... If that's the case, I'm definitly on board with trading down to 4...

If we had a QB option that Kiff was happy with predraft, I'd be more than happy to trade back and take Peterson as well, but to be honest, outside of a fondness for Walter, signing Carr or trading for Aaron Rodgers, the options are limited at best...

Only 26 more days!!!!

This is one of those situation I was talking about a few months ago...what's the protocol? Al isn''t gonna get jammed by trading and then not getting his man. If TB agrees to something and then somebody jumps over somebody else to get our man we're screwed. Al's not playing that game again. The Orlando Pace debacle happens only one time in a 50 year career.

This could be where the Raiders take a page from the Chargers a couple years back.

Take CJ with the number 1, with an agreement in place with TB that if the player the Raiders want is there at #4 they will trade CJ to the Bucks for the #4 plus additional picks.

Worst case the Raiders are "stuck" with CJ.

The top three teams could all go in different ways, I am patiently waiting for it to clear up.

We'll see if someone is interested in putting together a mega-package for CJ. I have my doubts.

I'd be damn fine pulling the trigger on Russell or Quinn at the one spot.

That's just me though.

What options do we really have left at QB if we pass on either JRuss or Quinn? We have no one behind Walter who's a huge ? in his own right. I just hope we don't fugg this one up.

The one problem with that plan is that, like Rivers a couple of years ago, the player we trade for will likely want number one money. If I remember correctly, Rivers held out quite a while over the issue. Not sure Al's going to go for that.

If the Raiders think either of these QB's are can't miss, they shouldn't trade down IMO.

I agree, RaiderIV. If you're in position to get your guy and your guy just happens to be one of the most highly coveted guys in the entire draft, you don't screw around. Get your guy and call it good. There's no need to get overly clever about it and get an additional pick but miss out on the guy you want in the process.

Yup, I could easily see Detroit & Cleveland taking QB's and the only team in the top-5 that most assuredly will NOT draft a QB is Tampa Bay and trading with them puts us at #4. I don't see us trading down if the guy we want is named Russell, Quinn or Johnson.

The only scenario where a trade down works is if we covet Adrian Petersen IMO.

BTW, for all the talk about David Carr & Tim Couch going 'bust', there are also guys like Carson Palmer & Peyton Manning that have gone 'boom'. Other high pick notables such as Vince Young seem to have a bright future and shit, even though you can knock Michael Vick, the dude does WIN football games. I think taking a QB #1 is not neccesarily a bigger risk than any other position. (shrug)

And again, I completely agree with you. Common sense seems to go out the window at draft time and people forget that they should be focusing on the player, not the position.

"Oooh, quarterbacks go bust! Don't pick one!" - Yeah, what if he's John Elway?

"Oooh, running backs should never be taken that high!" - Yeah, what if he's Eric Dickerson?

"Oooh, wide receivers can be had later! Don't draft one!" - Yeah, what if he's Tim Brown?

And on and on. You could do it for any position, really... but it doesn't pass the "common sense" test. If you think the guy is going to be the next Elway or Favre or Marino or Manning, you have to take the guy. It isn't like any of the other positions are less of a crapshoot.

If its as close of a race as we think then we should draft the guy who fills a bigger need. QB not WR/HB

Of course getting cockblocked for Pace, all would have been forgotten had we just gone ahead and taken the highly regarded LT that was 1B to Paces 1A on many draft boards after a great combine performance... I know Seahawk fans are glad that we didn't... :(

I gotta feelin we're taking Calvin Johnson
