Welcome to the team - Spencer Burford

Even as a depth piece, this acquisition does not move the needle for me at all.

If he remains with the team after final cuts, then it will be clear that the Raiders need to do more down the road to address the depth along the OL.

Note: "He struggled mightily, tying for last among 77 qualifying guards with 200+ pass-blocking snaps last season in pass blocking efficiency, according to Pro Football Focus."

This feels too similar to the Alex Cappa move made last offseason. Familiarity with someone within the organization and having the infamous title of being worst at something regarding your job.

Burford started as a rookie, played in the NFC championship game. His 2nd year, he started in the SB. Got hurt, after which he became a backup. Better run blocker than pass protector. Has more experience in KK’s wide zone scheme than other rostered OL.

He knows the offense. He can help get the other linemen up to speed. There's value in that.

49er fan hates him and blames him for the SB loss.

I wonder if there's any chance Meredith gets back on track?

Cappa is 31 and toast. Burford is still only 25, started 9 games last year even though it was back up duty. No one is expecting him to start anytime soon but he is better than most of the garbage they trotted out their last season.

Garbage is better than the offensive line. We had last season. Spencer Burford looks like a depth piece (maybe) and an extra lineman on short yardage running plays. Anything more than that is gravy. From what I hear on his pass protection, he’s not that much of an upgrade over Alex Cappa.

Perhaps Jordan Meredith could return to decency once he returns to guard. Jackson Powers-Johnson could be okay at the other guard spot, although I always thought he looked better at center. If nothing else, he gives the Raiders a good backup center in case Tyler Linderbaum goes down. If Caleb Rogers and Charles Grant — both step up in their sophomore years — with the help of a competent OL coach — the line should be several degrees better than 2025.

According to one source he is not better, in fact as I stated was considered the very worst in the league.

Look I want dearly for Spy to add depth and yes, young and developing depth all the better.

Sorry but this type of pickup reminds me of the Cappa signing. OK, one was older than the other, but you know both were famous for sucking...and do think that similarity more important than the so-called big stat ...the difference in age.

OL needs to be addressed but this is not the way to do it. Bringing in other people's garbage famous for sucking is not exactly the way to improve your OL. He is familiar with the scheme. Did it help him last year?

I understand and agree that by all accounts, he was terrible last year. But he was ok prior to that and is still young. Parham rated PFF highly in certain games in which it looked like the dude was the worst guy out there. I don't love this signing; nor hate it. He's depth.

It could help Rogers and JPJ.
If bringing him in helps some other players in the offseason, then yes, keep him around and then shuffle him off when assembling your roster before the start of the season.

If that is the plan, then yes, good move.

But otherwise, it stinks of the Cappa debacle last offseason.

The level of talent with the OL depth does appear to matter. The one constant regarding this unit.....its ability to suffer injuries.

He was a depth piece last season and when called upon, stunk it up big time. Why would the Raiders want him for the very same role?

Is failure something you seek in free agency?

Kind of where I am at. Let's see what Dennison can do with him. We will also be drafting more OL.
