Welcome to the team - Malcolm Koonce

He's a DPR.

Just like when Ngakoue entered the league.

A pass rush specialist.

Probably took him early but he has upside.

I hadn’t heard of him until tonight honestly. I really like this pick.

Brugler clearly missed the boat on Koonce. :sneak:

33. MALCOLM KOONCE | Buffalo 6022 | 249 lbs. | SR. Peekskill, N.Y. (Archbishop Stepinac) 6/6/1998 (age 22.90) #50

BACKGROUND: Malcolm Koonce grew up in the Hudson Valley in eastern New York and started playing football in the third grade, adding rugby to his athletic resume in the eighth grade. Prior to his sophomore season, Koonce transferred to Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains where he joined the varsity as a tight end and defensive end (and was teammates with Syracuse’s Trill Williams). As a junior, Koonce posted 59 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks. He earned Second Team All-State honors as a senior with 58 tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss, 9.0 sacks and one forced fumble. Koonce helped lead Stepinac to an undefeated 2015 season and the state championship as a senior.

A no-star defensive end recruit out of high school, Koonce didn’t qualify and attended Milford Academy for one semester in the fall of 2016 to get his academics in order. He posted 47 tackles and 11.0 sacks in his one season at the prep level. Koonce was considered a two-star prep level defensive end recruit and committed to play at Buffalo, joining the program in January 2017. He opted out of the 2020 bowl game. Koonce accepted his invitation to the 2021 Senior Bowl, but was unable to participate due to a left foot injury.

STRENGTHS: Quick upfield acceleration...quick-footed and pivots well off his rush steps to sneak into the backfield from different angles...uses his undersized body to his advantage, dipping and making himself small through gaps...shows the lateral quicks to avoid roadblocks...doesn’t have ideal length, but his hands are explosive and physical, using a violent two-hand swipe to gain his freedom...plays with a revved motor and makes plays from the backside...looks comfortable when zone dropping...led the team in sacks each of the last two seasons.

WEAKNESSES: Tweener size and lacks ideal frame/length...too easily overwhelmed and covered up by size on the edge, allowing offenses to run at him...inconsistent body control when trying to work through contact...tight through his hips, making it tough for him to quickly flatten his rush path...overaggressive with his rush attack, mistiming his swipes and losing his balance...inconsistent finishing strength as a tackler and ball carriers can stiff arm him to the ground...only a 1.5 year starter and not a fundamentally-sound player at this stage of his career...missed the Senior Bowl due to a left foot injury (January 2021).

SUMMARY: A two-year starter at Buffalo, Koonce lined up at left and right defensive end in defensive coordinator Brian Borland’s scheme, primarily standing up on the edge. He had a breakout junior season in 2019 and led the MAC with 9.0 sacks, finishing his career ranked sixth in school history with 18.0 career sacks. Although he has some stiffness, Koonce is a high-spirited, face-up pass rusher with the foot quickness and physical upper half to force his way into the backfield. He struggles to answer power at the line of scrimmage and can be inconsistent as an edge-setter. Overall, Koonce is a tweener pass rusher with efficiency issues and limitations vs. the run, but his upfield acceleration and violent hands are intriguing building blocks for a subpackage rusher.

Las Vegas Raiders draft Malcolm Koonce: Buffalo pass rusher brings some juice

The Las Vegas Raiders selected defensive end Malcolm Koonce with the 79th pick in the third round of the NFL Draft on Friday. He is the best player out of Buffalo since … Khalil Mack.

Big Board ranking: Koonce was No. 200 on Dane Brugler’s Top 300 prospects.

Introduction: The Raiders had success finding a bendy small-school pass rusher in 2019 with Maxx Crosby, and they hope they found another one in Koonce. Koonce was forgotten by many experts after he missed the Senior Bowl due to a foot injury, but he had 14 sacks in his last 19 games. He is 6-foot-3, 250 pounds and has long arms. He needs to put on some weight, just like Crosby did when he was drafted by the Raiders.

How he fits: He can help fill the void left by the recently waived Arden Key. The Raiders already have Yannick Ngakoue, Crosby and Clelin Ferrellon the edge, but you figure Koonce will be asked to chase the quarterback in the rotation, and his immediate role will be determined by the brass’ success in finding a trade partner for Carl Nassib this weekend. The Raiders had to restructure Nassib’s deal to avoid eating $5 million, but it’s clear they felt they needed some more juice in the pass rush.

Second guess? Some may think it was a reach, but ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper didn’t think so, and neither do I. You can never have enough good pass rushers, and any prospect with success getting to the quarterback in college who has long arms and any kind of bend should not be saved to pick later in the draft.

Rookie impact: How much he plays depends on if Nassib is still on the roster and on how much Ferrell moves inside on passing downs. The Raiders signed a plethora of defensive tackles this offseason, and yet they still may have to move Ferrell inside because Ngakoue and Crosby figure to be the main quarterback chasers.

Depth chart impact: General manager Mike Mayock said a year ago that third-round picks are like stealing future starters, and then drafted two non-starters out of three players. Koonce just needs to make an impact pressuring the quarterback as part of Gus Bradley’s rotation to make this a worthwhile pick this season. Nassib’s experience would put him above Koonce on the depth chart. That’s why you trade Nassib for a late pick and some towels.

Fast evaluation: A quick look at the tape shows his potential, and that’s good enough for me. Plus, the Raiders have done well with pass rushers from Buffalo.

I didn’t pay much attention past the top 50 guys or so, so this was first I’d heard of him. After watching I love this pick. I think he’s gonna be a steal.

"Just a dude that straps on his helmet and bullies anybody in his way." Malcolm Koonce on his projected role, which I'm guessing will make some Raiders fans very happy

pops off the tape as a legit speed rusher, just too small to set an edge and play the run

edit: otherwise he’s probably a first round pick
