I’d like to see the percentage of NFL starters who play good football but who showed little as rookies. It doesn’t take bad coaching for a rookie not to raise his game to NFL level competition. For the first time rookies are playing grown ass men who might practice 24/7/365. Add in poor coaching, do you even need to label it a “mulligan”? It’s no small part of what being on a rookie deal is about, no?

Was a time when a rookie year was just that. Expectations were fairly low outside the 1st round guys. With the way things are now you don’t have much time to “figure things out” for a year or two. Bad teams are flipping schemes HC’s DC’s OC’s every other year all the while trying to find guys good enough for what they want to do.

I’d guess that percentage of players who get time to figure it out is higher amongst the quality teams and much lower with the Raiders types of the NFL. As a player you better show well early and often otherwise the next staff coming in will have zero reason to value you. They are already looking to replace you.
 
More often than not assuming playing time, guys that will be good show glimpses right away. Miller was complete dog shit his rookie year though. Bech is a tougher eval because he doesn't have any traits that are going to pop. His learning curve needs to be quick though because his path to playing time is doing all that vet savvy shit that made Jakobi good.

Jakobi was an udfa. Not disagreeing with you but Bech should have already had those traits to be a 2nd rounder.
