Welcome to the team - Jermod McCoy

Bold f'ing move, but exactly what I would off done in that position. Might be my favorite pick other than Mendingo. Top 10 talent in the 4th round, even if just for a few years.

It was time. Definitely worth the risk. Love the moves made in this draft to fortify the secondary.

Franchise tradition, a guy who may never play, lol. Who was that receiver who had the serious knee injury in the twilight years of Al? Arman Shields?

After knee surgery usually a player takes the following year to get back on track and retrain muscle memory in regards to knee movement, etc. So he might not be the Jermod McCoy of Tennessee this year. But, that’s ok…we’re in building mode right now.

His ceiling? 1st round McCoy.

His floor? ‘Plus’ starting corner in the NFL.

So even if he *never* gets to his ceiling (and I wouldn’t count that out)…we still got a good-to-very good starting corner…*in the 4th round*, IMO.

Overview

  • Hometown: Whitehouse, TX
  • Birthday: August 16, 2005
  • Age: 20.7
  • Jersey: No. 3
  • High School: Whitehouse
  • Year: Third-year junior
A one-year starter at Tennessee (and one-and-a-half-year starter overall), McCoy was the left cornerback (primarily outside) in former defensive coordinator Tim Banks’ man-heavy scheme. Known more as an offensive player in high school, he announced himself as an up-and-coming cornerback at Oregon State in 2023 — his first career interception came against then-Cal QB Fernando Mendoza. He transferred to Tennessee as a sophomore and had an All-America season, with 13 passes defended and four interceptions, before an ACL injury wiped out his junior year.

The bad news is McCoy doesn’t have any 2025 tape. The good news is McCoy’s 2024 tape is really, really good. He is patient, agile and balanced in press-man coverage and has the reactive athleticism to gear up or down quickly. Though he has the requisite speed for the NFL, his panic moments downfield can draw him out of phase or lead to flags. He shows terrific awareness in zone to feel and bait routes around him, while also driving on the action in front of him.

Dane’s takeaway

McCoy needs to hone his discipline to hold up versus NFL competition, but he is a twitchy mover with the spatial instincts and ball skills to create plays in coverage. If there are no concerns with his knee, he should be an early NFL starter as a rookie.

Dane loving our draft.

BTW, I interrupt the McCoy amazement to point out that beating KC for the first time at home with a 60 yard FG on Carlson’s last FG as a Raider cost the Raiders a ‘27 R7 pick. I relent. Totally not worth it. :chuckle:

Do we know if it's surgery now or eventually?
