Welcome to the team - Dalton Johnson

Johnson might be a little light in the measurables department, but his play is tough, twitchy and instinctive. He excels playing in short-zone coverage. He has the athletic ability for man coverage near the line and is quick to read/react to throws in front of him. He’s not an ideal fit as a deep-zone defender, though. Johnson could struggle against vertical speed and big slot receivers in man coverage. He can be swallowed by big blockers as a down safety but has the ability to pile up tackles if they don’t get to him first. Johnson is a Day 3 value as a backup nickelback/safety hybrid with core special-teams talent.

I liked Wheatley. Wonder why we liked Johnson more. Big difference on Arif’s board. Wheatley fell, SpyGuy traded up/reached for Johnson.

Charles Davis just said nice words about Johnson as a product of the Wilson trade.

Overview

  • Hometown: Katy, TX
  • Birthday: April 15, 2003
  • Age: 23
  • Jersey: No. 43
  • High School: Katy
  • Year: Fifth-year senior
A three-year starter at Arizona, Johnson played the “B Kat” safety position in defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales’ scheme (his fourth defensive coordinator in five seasons in the program). He became a starter as a sophomore and posted consistent tackle numbers each year, with his best production coming as a senior (tied for the team lead in 2025 with four interceptions).

Johnson put together a solid college resume and backs up that experience with a mature work ethic that translated to the field. Though his lack of length shows at times as a tackler, he throws his body around with admirable toughness as a run defender. In coverage, he showed improved awareness as a senior, but scouts have questions about his eye discipline and man-cover skills.

Dane’s takeaway

Johnson lacks ideal size and coverage twitch, but his speed and physicality will give him an opportunity to find an NFL home as a backup strong safety. His versatile experience in the secondary and on special teams only helps his chances.

Safety Dalton Johnson addresses the media after being selected 150th overall by the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Hahaha. @007 nailed our C+ pick, which is hard to get from CBS.com. Lol

Johnson got an unsolicited shoutout from the Jr. Varsity personal guys at the post Day 3 presser when they were discussing the Wilson trade. Seemed genuinely hyped about the pick, as it should be. They just seem to know what they are talking about. Raiders’ draft was not being run or overly influenced by coaches anymore.

If @Crow can latch onto Chris Smith for a few seasons I will latch onto this guy.

His shit was fun as hell to watch. I was trying to be secretive and coy about Stukes and watching a bunch of Arizona games on youtube because they had three draftable safeties (I had Stukes in my Lil Al until the day of as well!) but Johnson popped off on tape. Made some tiny guy big plays like Budda Baker and Brian Branch.

I hope he works out.

Not one of the safeties I ever saw the mediots talk about, but we'll see how it goes. He was pretty productive.
He's the only guy we took that I didn't watch any of him before the draft. Seems like he could turn into decent depth or a ST guy at least.
