Welcome to the team - CB Darien Porter

What other Day 1 or 2 position switches have we seen like this? I'm not talking option QB to WR or RB.

We know about Jerry Porter who had only 24 receptions as a WR and he took 2 years of seasoning before he got into the rotation regularly and I'd say never reached his athletic potential as a 47th overall pick.

My favorite Jerry Porter anecdote was when rookie CB Nnamdi Asomugha was being interviewed and Porter interrupted to talk some shit to the rookie. Started popping off about how he played WR, Safety, corner and more in college. Without missing a beat, Nnamdi calmly answered, “Yeah, when you go to a school like West Virginia you have to.”

Porter has 3 seasons experience at DB, he just became a starter at some point last season. He's had approximately 700 defensive snaps. Granted that's not a lot, but he's been learning the position quite a while now. I haven't really bothered to spend much time on him until today but pretty much every report seems to be that he's high upside and a perfect fit as a cover 3 CB.

Richard Sherman made the transition and Porter is much more athletic. TBH have not heard many negative reports about him. It will take him a season to learn the nuances of playing in the NFL but you can’t teach his speed and length. I fully expect him to be starting next season.

Has anyone with 7 college starts ever made the jump to starting NFL CB that quickly? Got to believe Bennett, Stokes and Richardson will be the first three to play outside and Porter will come in only upon injury or failure by one or more of them.

Has anybody ever? Maybe not. There may be a first, and it may not be this guy.

But the point the TDL guys kept making that when he got beat, it wasn't bad.

Hayes had that crazy year of pics b/c teams kept testing him (Al’s converted safety). Porter has ball skills (being a former WR). If he cashes in with pics, losing reps here and there, you think, can’t be worse than Jack, Jack last year, can it? Accelerate his learning curve by playing.

Jack guessed -- a lot. Teams knew it and baited him.

Porter is just a different dude. He knows his speed so is more comfortable staying square until he has to break his hips and then stays in contact with the receiver -- absolutely insane ability to mirror a receiver on a curl by sinking his hips and no wasted motion with his feet. At 6'4" the ability to do that is borderline surreal.

NFL receivers will test him with jag steps that probably won't work because he stays so square, but will give him much more subtly believable double moves. But because he is good at staying with receivers and finding the ball, he doesn't watch the QB. Even in zone, his awareness is good -- probably because as a former WR he knows how he would attack his area of the zone.

Porter, Bennett, Stokes. One of them plays slot depending on the matchup. And that could be Porter. Guy is fearless in taking on pulling Gs. He doesn't do anything, but with better technique and strength work, h could be a nightmare.

There’s nothing about Porter that suggests he’d be successful inside. He’s an outside CB all day long.

Porter, Bennett and Stokes are the 3 corners I hope dont even get near the slot.

Gotta fire up the All 22 I guess.

FWIW, here are the top four "Pete Carroll" CBs on the roster.

Jakorian Bennett, 9.59 RAS
Eric Stokes, 7.9 RAS
Decamerion Richardson, 9.79 RAS
Darien Porter, 9.99 RAS

Bennett doesn't have ideal length. But the other 3 do. But a highly athletic group.

True. But Bennett has 31.88 inch arms -- almost the 32 inches Carroll focuses on -- and his 40.5 vertical means he will not lose many high point balls.

I’m just giving you a hard time on the size thing but I’d be shocked if he saw any time inside. Aside from the obvious, he’s supposedly a pretty poor tackler.

And he’s started 7 games at corner as a 24 year old rookie.

He needs to just be put on the boundary and asked to use his length and speed as an asset as he has a very unique development curve with little or no reps inside.

Apparently a great special teamer though so dumb the shit down for him. Gunner and the guy who covers the other teams fastest and biggest dude.

He is not a terrible tackler from a will standpoint. He is a converted WR playing CB -- not your best tackling bunch. The one slot rep I saw of him playing man his ability to stay square and not be fooled by a jag step made him good to stay with the slot WR.

Agree playing him on the boundary will help, and he's shown some ability to crowd guys toward the sideline. He is physical in coverage, and has the length to be a good press man once he learns to use his arm length. Against timing offenses (most of them) playing press man allows the pass rush a little extra time.

@007, he blocked four punts and FG in college. No one else ever did that in the Big Ten. Shades of the Mad Stork.

He has played in over 30 games. He also played CB in High School.
