Welcome to the team - CB Darien Porter

I just had so much fun reading this. Kid has a chill that is essential to playing CB. He's smart. His is the jersey I order.
Wait until after roster cuts. Drives me nuts that they sell rookie jerseys before then. The kid is wearing number 36 but then the guy wearing 44 gets cut and he wants to change. Fuckers.

Only order retired player jerseys!

Drafting a guy who only played CB for three years and was a WR before -- Pete Carroll did that. And he mentioned the name of that player.

Porter showed in interviews that he's aware of what he can get better at, and accepts it while knowing that's building on what he has now. He strikes me as a smart football player -- how many CBs with his speed and QBR against get half their highlights making tackles in the run game. Blocked five -- FUCKING FIVE -- kicks.

Every player drafted was perceived by Spytek and Carroll as competitors who love the game, have quiet confidence and solid work ethic. If Porter combines those traits....

Going up against every receiver on the roster with an NFL QB throwing, we'll see. Those run support tackles were film based recognition.

Posted this on another thread -- Bennett, Porter, Richardson, Stokes... all pretty young and athletic CBs for Pete to try and develop. The slowest of them is Richardson and he ran a 4.34.

Pete / Graham definitely have some young talent with traits to work with and develop for the two outside cb spots.

Competition for and talent at the slot cb spot though is thin. Wouldn’t mind seeing the team bring in MHilton to help solidify that spot. Also wouldn’t mind team bringing in Justin Simmons to help with the deep centerfield coverage safety (FS) role as both Chinn and Pola-Mao are better closer to the LOS. Both are savvy vets (unfortunately on the downside) that wouldn’t break the bank but could help to stabilize the D.

Favorite pick of the draft

LAS VEGAS RAIDERS: CB DARIEN PORTER (ROUND 3, PICK 68)

Porter is a great scheme fit for the Raiders. His length and speed make him an ideal outside cornerback for Pete Carroll’s Cover 3-heavy defense. Porter earned a 91.1 PFF coverage grade while allowing just a 29.6% completion rate in 2024. A team that desperately needed cornerback help got a good one.

All the Cover 3 talk is kinda cute but, don’t we kinda need a good FS to make that all come together?

3rd prospect swiped from ‘9ers?

Iowa State cornerback Darien Porter was a player heavily linked to the 49ers ahead of the draft and it was rumored they were targeting Porter with the 11th pick in the third round.

Unfortunately for the Faithful, the Raiders took Porter with the third pick in the third round and according to at least one 49ers feed, the Niners were calling teams at the time trying to move up to get Porter.

It’s not a rock-solid source, but what a story it would be if the Raiders stole players from the 49ers with all three picks in the third round.

This was interesting. Porter had one of the fastest times ever recorded at a Senior Bowl practice.

How does that track speed translate to the football field? He was clocked at 22.17 mph during Senior Bowl practices last month, the fastest time of the week and one of the best since data has been available.

In the eight years Zebra Technologies has been tracking player speed at the Senior Bowl, only one player was faster: Tariq Woolen (22.45 mph), who ran a 4.26-second 40 at the combine.

So Pete just drafted Riq Woolen again … basically the same size and all

TDL guys breaking down Porter. Bottom line, guy is crazy gifted, looks good in man and zone, and is still crazy raw.

Has anyone with 7 college starts ever made the jump to starting NFL CB that quickly? Got to believe Bennett, Stokes and Richardson will be the first three to play outside and Porter will come in only upon injury or failure by one or more of them.

Pretty valid concern. Kid has all the skills to be good but might take a year or two of development to get there.
