This signing reflects Brady’s philosophy that young QBs shouldn’t play before they are ready. Sit on the bench and learn if need be.

Doesn’t mean Mendoza won’t start day 1 but he won’t be forced to.
 
I’m curious to see how the contract is structured… hard to imagine that he’s getting anything close to what he’s received in the past and I’d think both sides would be interested in having a contract that would be easily tradeable down the line.

In any case, assuming not a lot of cap spent, hard to argue with having Cousins around as a placeholder and mentor.

Over/under?

Cousins should start until (a) hurt, (b) OL plays well but he plays poorly, or (c) Raiders are out of contention. If the OL plays poorly, let Cousins deal with it and take the beating until well into the season.

Alt ate $22.5M in dead cap by releasing Cousins. I’m hoping he’s on a vet min. deal, at least for this year. He’s already been paid by Atl for ‘26, no differently than Russell when he signed with Pitts after being cut by Den. Anything SpyGuy pays Cousins offsets Alt’s dead cap. Why would any NFL team do that? That’s my hope at least.

Cousins signed with Minn in ‘18 after 6 years and 1 Pro Bowl season in Wash. Kubiak was Cousins QB coach, then OC from ‘19 to ‘21. Cousins made the Pro Bowl 2 of those 3 years. He’s only made the Pro Bowl once since ‘21, when he went 13-4 in ‘22, his last good year before getting injured. Guessing there is both familiarity and trust there.

Likely got told he'll have the first crack at starting week one. No complaints with bringing him in. At worst he's a guy Mendoza can watch and learn how to be a pro from. Makes it so there's no pressure on forcing Mendoza on the field before he's ready.

Yep. Win/win. IDK if Cousins has a mentor’s gene. But Mendoza can at least watch how Counsins prepares and works in Kubiak’s offense and compete on a daily basis.
 
Sounds like this administration thinks we might be competing this year. If they didn’t think so, why not just let AO'C start the season?
