-- The Raiders gave free-agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper a workout Monday in Florida, a league source confirmed Monday, the latest indication No. 1 draft pick JaMarcus Russell's holdout could last awhile.

Personnel staffer George Streeter oversaw the workout with Culpepper, an eight-year veteran who was cut by the Miami Dolphins on July 17.

Culpepper missed nine games in 2005 after needing major surgery to repair three torn ligaments in his right knee. He has told reporters his knee is now fine.

The tryout came as Raiders coach Lane Kiffin praised quarterback Josh McCown, who is splitting first-team snaps with Andrew Walter.

"He's shown us that he continues to make plays," Kiffin said after a morning practice Monday. "As you watch the film, god, he's not scared of anything. If you watch him around his team now, this team kind of watched him a little bit. I guess you can call him the guy, he's a real guy. You notice it, the receivers, the linemen, he's fitting in really well."

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please JaMarcus sign that deal!

Probably some good posturing by the Raider front office. 4 or 5 teams have already passed on this guy. I think he's toast.

RAIDERS TALKING TO CULPEPPER

Earlier this year, ESPN's John Clayton declared that Daunte Culpepper was the key to the draft because, if the Raiders were to acquire him, they would not pick JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 overall selection.

We reported in response that the acquisition of Culpepper did not mean that the Raiders would be out of the market for Russell, and vice-versa.

Now, with talks between the Raiders and Russell bogged down and most teams scared off by Culpepper's demand for a one-year contract, Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Culpepper has worked out for the Raiders, and is in talks with the team about signing a contract.

It's unclear whether the sudden interest in Culpepper is driven by the status of the Russell talks, or whether the Raiders would be pursuing this possibility even if Russell were under contract. Still, Culpepper gives the Raiders some insurance against an ongoing holdout.

Though some believe that the gap between the Raiders and Russell is rooted in money, we heard earlier on Monday that the structure of the deal is the problem. Russell's camp wants to maximize the amount of the package that is devoted to an option bonus payment, which is not subject to forfeiture in the event of a holdout or a suspension

This is fucking UNBELIEVABLE. I can't believe one of my jihads is still alive. Where's Adrian Peterson at?

In Minnnesota I think near Anderson lake.

:D

Ha... I'm on the next flight out. Might even pick up a Silver and Black Culpepper Jersey on the way.

More on Culpepper

NAPA - The news of tonight's practice wasn't practice. It was Lane Kiffin announcing Daunte Culpepper will be here tomorrow morning with a workout.

The team worked him out in Florida and apparently liked what they saw.

What this means, of course, is the team doesn't believe it's close to having JaMarcus Russell in camp. If Culpepper is healthy, he would be the best quarterback on the roster.

The Dolphins released Culpepper July 17. He's played in 11 games over the last two seasons because of a knee injury in Minnesota's seventh game in 2005.

He played in four games last year and eventually had surgery on the knee again late last year.

Even after praising Josh McCown today, Kiffin is obviously serious about competition. He's not going to let anyone feel like his job is safe.

If Culpepper were to join the Raiders, I could see Andrew Walter being traded if the team doesn't want to carry four quarterbacks because Russell will join the team at some point.

That would give Kiffin two experienced quarterbacks (Culpepper and McCown) and allow him to let Russell sit all year like Cincinnati did with Carson Palmer.

So when Russell does show up, he might find the player a lot of scouts compare him to in the same locker room.

Culpepper to work out in Oakland after private workout in Florida

NAPA, Calif. -- Free agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper will work out for the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday, two weeks after being released by the Miami Dolphins.

Culpepper held a private workout for a member of the Raiders' personnel department in Florida on Monday. The 30-year-old quarterback did well enough there to persuade the team to fly him out to California for an additional workout.

"Anytime that we have a chance to investigate something that can help our team win, were going to do it," Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said. "Obviously Daunte is something that weve been looking into for a little bit. This is kind of the climax of it, working him out tomorrow."

Culpepper began 2006 as Miami's starter but had trouble with his mobility and was sacked 21 times in the first four games. The Dolphins shut him down so he could continue rehabbing and eventually placed him on injured reserve. When they acquired Trent Green in a trade with Kansas City this offseason, Culpepper became expendable.

The Dolphins tried unsuccessfully to trade Culpepper a year after acquiring him from Minnesota. When Miami could find no takers, the former Pro Bowl quarterback was released on July 17. Culpepper met with Tampa Bay two days later but did not receive a contract offer from the Bucs.

The Raiders have an interest in Culpepper in part due to the holdout of No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell. Russell has yet to sign a contract with Oakland, and Kiffin on Sunday indicated negotiations between the two sides had slowed.

Kiffin acknowledged that Russell's situation was a precursor to bringing Culpepper in for a workout.

"Sure it is," Kiffin said. "You've gotta protect your team [and] put yourselves in the best position to win and make sure that you have the right depth and competition at each spot."

If Culpepper is healthy, he would be the best quarterback on the roster.
Even if he's not healthy... Culpepper (PRAISE BE WITH) would still be the best QB on the roster. If he were really healthy, you could argue Culpepper (PRAISE BE WITH) might even be the best RB on the roster. :D

This one adds a little more...

Raiders to workout Culpepper on Tuesday

Michael Wagaman

Posted Jul 31, 2007

The Raiders will bring in quarterback Daunte Culpepper for a workout on Tuesday, coach Lane Kiffin acknowledged.

Culpepper, released by the Miami Dolphins in the offseason, worked out for a member of the Raiders personnel department in Florida on Monday.
The session apparently went well enough that Oakland is flying Culpepper out to California and will have him in Napa for an additional workout.

“Anytime that we have a chance to investigate something that can help our team win, we’re going to do it,” Kiffin said. “Obviously Daunte is something that we’ve been looking into for a little bit. This is kind of the climax of it, working him out tomorrow.”

Kiffin did not hesitate when asked if working Culpepper out was related to the holdout of first-round draft pick JaMarcus Russell.

“Sure it is,” Kiffin said. “You’ve gotta protect your team, gotta put yourselves in the best position to win and make sure that you have the right depth and competition at each spot.”

What Happens when they tell Dante that he would be the 3rd QB.
With McCown and Russell ahead of him, McCown being 1st and when Russell gets in he is automaticaly #2.

I think cullpepper could beat out mccown fairly easy. will he? dont know. his brain is so soft and slow, it could hold him back.

Hehehe...ik Kiffin towing the company line, waving the flag and taunting Russell with a Culpepper workout. Gotta give it to Kiffin the man is learning the NFL ropes in a hurry.

Seems like nothing more than posturing to me. CPep's not going to get an offer in the ballpark of what he received from Jacksonville. Add to that the fact that he'd be coming into Oakland as the #3 QB by default (think about it... bum knee, doesn't know the offense, etc.) and I think this boils down to a little back scratching by both sides.

The Raiders are helping Culpepper out by hosting a visit, thereby increasing his value just by the sheer fact that he's now visited 3 teams (Jax, TB, and now Oakland).

Culpepper is doing Oakland a solid by coming in and giving Russell's camp the impression that "hey, we're not waiting around forever... football doesn't stop just because you're not in camp."

I suspect the next 48 hours will see siginficant progress on the Russell contract.

Culpepper expected to sign

Jerry McDonald

Leave it to the Raiders to think big.

A source familiar with the situation said the Raiders are expected to sign free agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper today.

With the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, the Raiders signed JaMarcus Russell, who is 6-foot-5 and in the 250-pound range. Culepper is the only quarterback on the market with comparable size, at 6-foot-4 and a listed weight of 265 pounds.

Coach Lane Kiffin confirmed Sunday night Culpepper was being brought in for a workout. He also said the Raiders had already seen Culpepper recently.

With Russell out, the Culpepper would join Josh McCown and Andrew Walter, who have been splitting quarterback reps with the first team. It's been a relatively even competition, with Walter faring better in the pocket and McCown excelling on the move.

Questions remain about Culpepper's skills following a serious knee injury in Minnesota. Should he sign, all parties are likely to say Culpepper has a clean bill of health _ which is what happened last season in Miami when the Dolphins were forced to switch quarterbacks after four games.

More as news develops from Napa . . .

So it's been widely broadcast the Pepp only wants a 1 year deal.
McCown is on the last year of a 2 year deal.
So if we sign JR, then we'll have two QB's looking to bolt in 2008 and I keep hearing that Walter will be traded. This makes no sense. Otis, McCown and Pickett are gone and then we keep Pepp, JR and Walter. I'd be amazed if we went into 2008 banking on JR, Pickett and Otis.

Yes, I agree on Walter. I am hoping we hold onto Walter until the end of the 2008 season. He becomes a free agent after the 2009 season. If he continues to develop, we can acquire a nice draft pick for his trade. For me, I still believe he will make a good starting quarterback in the NFL.

who wants to toss some money on Dante can't beat Josh McCown out for the starting job IF we sign Culpepper!!!!

I am really kind of 'ehh' about this move.

Unless Baby Lane is gonna pull JaMarcus aside and say, "Look, that's how not to do it."

Culpepper is damaged goods, I haven't heard anything good about his leg since it was hurt. 2004 was a long, long time ago.
