Backup QB is . . . Walter

Posted by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on Friday at 2:25 pm

Drumroll please . . . .

Andrew Walter, and not JaMarcus Russell, will be the backup quarterback when the Raiders face the Minnesota Vikings Sunday in the Metrodome.

Coach Lane Kiffin said during the week Russell's improvement has been steady, but apparently it's not enough to give him the edge over a No. 4 quarterback who has largely been a spectator over the past few weeks.

------------------------------------

You can get the rest of McDonald's spin at his blog... but fucking thank you Al for stepping in and putting an end to this bull shit. The stooopid dog-n-pony show at QB is now ova. Al is back in charge.... and please don't try and 'splain that this was somehow Lane's decision.

Teacher's Pet: Fuck you very much... don't let the door hit your chaffed ass on the way out.

Walter: Welcome to the Raiders. Can't wait to see you on the field.

DC: Keep the seat warm, will ya

Russell: Tell your agents they suck.

Yeah Russell's agents suck hard. And they and not him probably cost the man a chance to be the starter in Oakland this year. Apparently he isn't ready (whatever that means) and it would seem clearly that Andrew Walter as the backup is not Kiffin's idea. As late as last week Kiffin was slamming Walter as not being the guy for this system etc. Very odd.

Seems to me it's got to be Lane's decision.

Daunte starting because McCown hurt.

Russell not No. 2 because Kiffin says he's not ready.

Walter No. 2 because McCown hurt.

When you also factor in that the deal Russell signed in September was no different than the deal on the table in July.... I'll be real surprised to see either of those jackasses represent a high profile player any time soon.

What Kiffin is going to learn after this most recent episode is it's better to keep his opinions to himself... because it's one thing to get over-ruled, but it's a whole other thing when it's this freakin' obvious. I'll be real curious to see how the team (especially Porter) responds on Sunday.

I think I mentioned this before but it deserves repeating.

I like Kiffin but I am starting to wonder about his choices when he speaks. He should practice in the mirror before he speaks and puts his foot in his mouth. The Walter thing to me is an obvious example. Something rather dramatic changed when just last week he wrote Walter off completely and it wasn't subtle.

I'm not sure what Kiffin was tryng to prove by declaring that the Raiders would kick to Hester. Was that to bolster confidence in his ST's or just to throw out a challenge? In any case I think it was foolish. It worked out OK although the Raiders still lost. Maybe they spent too mcuh time worrying about kicking to Hester and not enough time perfecting the game plan on offense. Ya think?

In any case I think some of Kiff's verbal cockiness is coming back to bite him somewhat. Think my man. Think.

Still think in the end Kiffin will be good for this franchise. This off season will be another house cleaning ala Jon Gruden.

How do we know Al was making this decision?

What a silly thread title. No facts, just pure silly commentary from the peanut gallery.\

I fully assume that this wouldnt be the big decision Al's been waiting to make. If anything it would have been to start JR, not to make the biggest scrub we have our #2 QB.

As much as I think Walter deserves the shot. I unfortunately agree with 007. That thank you Al shit is silly. McCown played his way enough out of the mix to fall to being cut. So i honestly believe the more likely scenario would involve McCown not willing to ride pine, Kiff not willing to hear it, and Kiff giving a guy who has kept his mouth shut at 4th string a shot.

Russell not No. 2 because Kiffin says he's not ready.

Walter No. 2 because McCown hurt.

This is it in a nutshell.

Total non-story.

It would become a story if Culpecker goes down and Walter hits the field.

Of course we could have actually signed him in back in April before the draft when we could have played the JaMarcus camp against the Calvin Johnson camp, the Joe Thomas camp and the Brady Quinn camp while we still had the "sign on the dotted line or lose millions of dollars when we choose Calvin Johnson instead" leverage hammer... No matter how it's spinned, we looked like amatuers with the way we approached it...

Seems to me it's got to be Lane's decision.

No... if it's an approved Socal move it's all Al, if it's not, it's on Kiff... Get with the program already... Socal has stolen Nip's mustard and is squirting it everyone's eye... :pound:

You're right fellas.... this was all Kiffin... he had a brain transplant on Thursday and decided to finally incorporate Walter onto the team. It only took 10 weeks for a neurosurgeon to remove Kiffin's head from McGown's ass crack. Now what do we do about removing this message board from Kiffin's ass crack?

Why bother having Walter participate in practice this week or even this season when you can put him on ice for 10 weeks and have him come in cold? This is some brilliant shit fellas. Kiffin = coach of the decade

Oh and that's right... it wasn't Al saying all summer that Russell wasn't ready to play this year. Clearly Al's big move (whateva that means) is to contradict himself and play Russell this year.

And the most irreverent... We decide to elevate Russell to #3 several weeks ago when the teacher's pet could barely practice. Oh but how dare anybody elevate Russell to #2 ahead of the teacher's pet after a weeks worth of practice reps. Let's elevate the guy who has taken fewer practice reps (i.e. 0 practice reps) because clearly he is more game ready. This is all coherent logic from our 7-2 coach.

... and it's a damn shame they put a jackass smilie limit on my posts.

I figure this is a classic 'stir the pot' thread, but it was Kiffin talking on Sirius radio Tuesday saying Walter has been great and a good soldier, etc...

It's not like Walter received significant reps with the ones...It was Pepper all week long with McCown beat up and JR still not ready for primetime.

I doubt Al made the big ol phone call to make Walter the #2. If anything he'd abuse his power more to start his guy, no?

In the end, its C-Pep starting, and this seems to be more of a sign that McCown is big time trash.

JMO.

As much as I think Walter deserves the shot. I unfortunately agree with 007.

Whattya mean? I havent disagreed with any of your junk in weeks... ;)

McCown played his way enough out of the mix to fall to being cut.

Bingo!

This is more a sign of McCown sucking and JR not being 100% ready for the big dance. I fully assume December will be the month he gets going. (And called that weeks ago)

So i honestly believe the more likely scenario would involve McCown not willing to ride pine, Kiff not willing to hear it, and Kiff giving a guy who has kept his mouth shut at 4th string a shot.

Unfortunately, I agree.:D

I wouldn't be suprised if Al made the call to bury McCown, but I doubt Walter factored into that decision.

You're right fellas.... this was all Kiffin... he had a brain transplant on Thursday and decided to finally incorporate Walter onto the team.

Um ... remind me who was the No. 2 QB back when McCown got hurt the first time and Daunte started?

Yeah, that would be Walter. Why should it have been any different this time around?

It seems pretty obvious to me why Russell was made the No. 3 over Walter the past few weeks.

If the Raiders were involved in a blowout, Russell could play in the fourth quarter for a few series with no risk of the W or L being on the line. After all, throwing Walter in in a blowout would make no sense.

On the other hand, if the starter were to get hurt, Kiffin wouldn't want Russell to be thrown in for the whole game. Hence, Russell is the No. 3 guy, not the No. 2 guy.

Walter is clearly Kiffin's No. 3 guy in the pecking order for being the STARTER, but it does no good to have him be the No. 3 in a game ahead of Russell, who could have the opportunity to get a taste of game action if the circumstances are right.

In addition, it was Al Davis who said in the offseason that he thought Walter could probably use a year off after the beating he took last year.

It's Al Davis who is paying Russell $60 million and is most likely to be impatient with him and want to see him ASAP.

So it seems to me that if Russell were to start, there would actually be a reasonable argument to be made that it was Al Davis' decision. But Walter? I just don't see how that's an Al move.

Regardless of who did what why, the only thing that makes this relevant will be how short a leash Dumbte is on. If/When he struggles, will Kiffin make the change? That's what I want to know.

Besides, Culfumble and McClown are gone at the end of the year. Walter will be our only QB other than the big dummy under contract. If these reps aren't going to the big dummy, they need to be going to Walter. We are building for the future, are we not? It's pretty damn obvious that neither of the two bums we've had under center this year figure into those plans. Let's start using some gray matter here, shall we?

Maybe Walter will end up taking snaps this season. Could the Kiffin Master Plan at Quarterback this season be in-game assessments of all four quarterbacks on the payroll, trying to find the Kitna to Russell's Palmer?

Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin picks Andrew Walter, not JaMarcus Russell, as backup QB against Minnesota Vikings

Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin announced Friday that Andrew Walter, not No. 1 draft choice JaMarcus Russell, would be the No. 2 quarterback behind Daunte Culpepper for Sunday's game against the Vikings.

There had been speculation that Russell could see the first action of his NFL career early in the second half, depending on the game situation.

The first overall selection in this year's draft, Russell missed 47 days of training camp and practices before signing and hasn't played in a game since Louisiana State's 41-14 victory over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 3.

Kiffin did qualify his quarterback depth chart slightly in case Josh McCown, who is listed as doubtful because of a bruised right quadriceps, is able to fill the No. 2 role.

Blitz fans: Beaten on the ground and through the air in last week's 34-0 loss at Green Bay, the Vikings' defense is expected to return to its blitzing ways Sunday, and linebackers Ben Leber and Chad Greenway are all for it.

"That would be great," Leber said. "You look at the success we had in that (San Diego) game, it proved that we have the personnel to run those blitzes and to be a pressure-type team."

How much the Vikings are able to blitz obviously will depend on the game situation, but the players clearly enjoy the attacking style.

"The way we played against San Diego," Greenway said, "that's a pretty good blueprint for getting some wins if we can continue to play like that."

It's not like Walter received significant reps with the ones...It was Pepper all week long with McCown beat up and JR still not ready for primetime.

That's the laughable part about this whole thing. Every news outlet in America made it clear that DC and Russell were splitting 1st team snaps all week while Walter was an irrelevant spectator (as he's been the last 10 weeks). If Kiffin had any plans of even considering putting Walter in the mix, he would have most certainly given him some 1st team snaps in the same competitive spirit that he's been trying to instill in practice since day 1. The fact that Kiffin suddenly puts Walter in the mix at the end of the week leads to either of 2 conclusions:

(a) Kiffin is so mentally limited that he doesn't have the ability to think critically and prepare his players (i.e. giving Walter 1st team snaps) in the event that Russell is still not ready to go.

(b) Al finally said enough is enough and took some control back from Kiffin and established the most appropriate pecking order: DC, Walter, and Russell.... even if it meant catching Kiffin and the teacher's pet with their pants down.

The answer is pretty damn obvious. As always, some of us see it now... the rest of us will realize it after it's all said and done.

I doubt Al made the big ol phone call to make Walter the #2. If anything he'd abuse his power more to start his guy, no?

Well this is where we are on different planets. For some reason you think Al wants to contradict himself and see Russell on the field this year, while I think Al brought in DC to ensure Russell doesn't see the field this year.

The second this became a protracted holdout, Al made it very clear that Russell would not see the field this year. Why would Al posture like that to the media in the middle of a protracted holdout? Maybe because he dumped a shitload of bonus money into Russell's 1st year that will be realized ONLY IF Russell sees the field this year. So if Russell is going to see that money, he had damn well be ready to play.... and clearly he's not ready to play according to every player and coach on the team.... so Al jumped in and made damn well sure that a penny of that bonus money wasn't going to end up in Russell or his agent's pockets if DC got injured or yanked on Sunday.

... and yes, I am assuming that Al structured Russell's deal in such a way. Considering Russell received 0 signing bonus and all his bonuses are incentive based and more front loaded than back loaded, I don't think it's a reach to assume a playing time bonus this year.
