Vegas picks Steelers as Super Bowl favorite

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Oddsmakers are betting the Bus will keep rolling through Motown.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Jerome "The Bus" Bettis, their bruising 13-year veteran NFL running back, emerged as 3 1/2- to 4-point favorites Sunday as Las Vegas sportsbooks picked the Steelers to defeat the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.
"Seattle's going to have their hands full," Bob Scucci, sportsbook director at the Stardust, said after Pittsburgh's 34-17 win over the Denver Broncos. Scucci made the AFC champion Steelers 4-point favorites even before the Seahawks finished off the Carolina Panthers, 34-14, in the NFC title game.

The teams will meet Feb. 5 in Detroit.

"Seattle was expected to win," Scucci said. "Pittsburgh went through the one, two, and three seeds, and a lot of people think the AFC from top-to-bottom was a lot better conference than the NFC."

Las Vegas Sports Consultants and Jay Kornegay, race and sportsbook director at the Las Vegas Hilton, also made the Steelers 4-point favorites, with the over-under line set between 47 1/2 and 49 points. The over-under lets bettors put money on whether the teams combine to score more or less than that amount. Initial odds often change as bookmakers weigh the money bettors put on one team or the other.

Robert Walker, sportsbook director for 13 MGM Mirage casinos in Nevada, cited Pittsburgh's victories over the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts and the Broncos to get to the NFL championship.

He made the Steelers 3 1/2 point favorites in what he called "an intriguing matchup," and set the over-under line at 47 1/2.

"It's fun to have a couple of new teams in for a change," Walker said. "Seattle's fun to watch and Pittsburgh was ultra-impressive."

I read yesterday that the Steelers would open as 5 1/2 point favorites.

Guess the odd makers thought better of it after the Seahawks performance yesterday.

Interesting a guy not known for winning the big games is a Super Bowl favorite over a coach that has a win in the Super Bowl.

I just hope for a tight contest, well fought and does justice to the season that both teams have had.

I do like the Steelers due to the coming out party for Big Ben, last year, they couldn't win those games because of him in the passing game, now they win because of it.

Gee what a suprise.

I tell ya what. I am glad everyone is overlooking Seattle as usual. Seattle is a damn good team and I think they will show it next week. I bet Pittsburgh will be a one point favorite once we get to the Super Bowl by next weekend.

JC: This will be one of the best Super Bowl games out there.

Well, I'd like to see the Steelers win one for the Bus....but honestly, I really don't care who wins this game...I'm not a fan of either team!! I was hoping to see the Panthers in it!! :(

Oh c'mon. Seattle is a special team and their fans are special too. Seattle fans have suffered like Detroit fans in football.

You got two likeable teams. I am torn to who to root for. I like to see Jerome end his career with a ring and it would be nice to see a great coach like Cowher get a ring. On the other hand, I have a fondness for the city of Seattle and I like to see Seattlities to get a championship. Plus, I love Holmgren. It's so good to see some new blood in a championship. It's nice to know I don't have to watch the Patriots this season. It was because of them that I didn't watch the playoffs last season. It's good to see some fresh blood. I thikn this will be a very good Super Bowl.

I was hoping the Colts would go to the Super Bowl just for you, Angel. :p

OMG.....The colts??? You obviously have talked to someone who knows me really really well ;) God Bless the Steelers for knocking them off their throne :)

Well Lynch told me that you were a huge Colts fan. Bitter because Peyton Manning torched the Chiefs D at Arrowhead several years ago in what was Vermeil's only year in the playoffs. :D

Ahaha....Lynch is such a kidder ;) The reason I "dislike" the colts so much has nothing to do with the team, really....it's certain colts fans that I know in person....I'd like to just shoot 'em sometimes....but they just aren't worth going to jail for :p
