Charles Coe (left) and Adam Henry have joined the Raiders coaching staff.

The Oakland Raiders have added Charles Coe as wide receivers coach and Adam Henry as offensive quality control assistant. Coe has spent the past four seasons as head coach at Alabama State University, leading the football team to a 29-18 record. Henry was most recently offensive coordinator and receivers coach at McNeese State University.

Raiders Head Coach Lane Kiffin said, "Charlie is going to bring a wealth of experience to our staff. He has had success coaching Pro Bowl caliber players at the collegiate level but beyond that, his ability to communicate and foster sound relationships is what really led me to believe he was a perfect fit for the Raiders.”

“Adam made such a solid first impression with us when we met with him initially that we felt he was ready to take the next step in his career into the NFL," Coach Kiffin said. "He will offer tremendous support to our entire offensive staff.”

In 2004, Coe led Alabama State to a 10-2 record and the Southwest Athletic Conference Championship, the second in school history and the first since 1991. Alabama State led the SWAC in scoring and total offense in 2004, with nine players named either First or Second Team All-Conference.

Coe also led Alabama State to the SWAC Eastern Division title in 2003. Coe was a finalist for the 2004 Eddie Robinson Award— given annually to the top head coach in Division I-AA—in both 2003 and ’04.

Coe began his college coaching career in 1976 at the University of Iowa. He also coached at the University of Cincinnati (1977-79), Ball State (1982), Louisville (1983-84), Missouri (1985-88) and Kansas State (1989).

From 1990-92, Coe coached receivers and running backs at the University of Tennessee under legendary coach Johnnie Majors. Coe followed Majors to the University of Pittsburgh in 1993, where he was the run offense coordinator. He moved on to the University of Memphis as running backs coach for three seasons before being promoted to assistant head coach and receivers coach in 2000.

In addition, Coe has served several NFL fellowships with the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets. He also was the offensive coordinator for the North squad in the 1994 Blue-Gray All-Star Game.

Henry, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, starred in both baseball and football at Kansas State, earning All-Big Eight Conference honors as a second baseman in 1971. He was drafted in the first round of the 1971 Major League Baseball Draft by the Detroit Tigers and spent two years in their system.

Henry spent the past 10 seasons at McNeese State, where he coached B.J. Sams, the conference player of the year as a senior who is now with the Baltimore Ravens, and Jermaine Martin, the school's all-time leading receiver. One of his receivers has been named the team MVP each of the past five seasons.

Henry served a coaching internship with the Cleveland Browns. The Beaumont, Texas native was an all-conference wide receiver at McNeese State and remains in the top 10 among all-time receivers in school history with 93 catches for 1,690 yards.

Kiffin might not be a spring chicken, but many of his assistants are very experienced. I think it's a good philosophy on Kiffin's part and it also shows that (at least on the surface) he's secure enough to hire people that are more established and experienced than himself.

These are not News Wire shattering hire's, but they do appear to be very solid and of course retaining Rob Ryan, while getting Knapp & Cable on board has been a stroke of genius IMO.

One thing I've liked about the guys Kiffin is bring in is that the players have seemed to think we're bringing together a good staff. Definitely a positive.

Coaching staff complete

With the announcement of Charles Coe as wide receivers coach and Adam Henry as offensive quality control assistant, the Raiders have completed their coaching staff.

The 2007 newcomers and who they replaced:

Head coach: Lane Kiffin, Art Shell

Offensive coordinator: Greg Knapp, Tom Walsh

Quarterbacks: John DeFilippo, Jim McElwain

Offensive line: Tom Cable, Irv Eatman (and Jackie Slater)
(Note: Eatman and Slater served as co-line coaches under the direction of Shell)

Offensive line assistant: James Cregg, (see above)

Wide receivers: Charles Coe, Fred Biletnikoff

Tight ends: Kelly Skipper, John Shoop

Running backs: Tom Rathman, Skip Peete

Quality control, offense: Adam Henry and Sanjay Lal, Robert Ford

Special teams: Brian Schneider, Ted Daisher

Defensive backs: Darren Perry, Chuck Pagano

Defensive backs assistant: Randy Hanson, Lorenzo Ward

Assistant defensive line: Don Johnson, Darryl Sims

Quality control special teams: Curtis Fuller, Lorenzo Ward

(Note: Ward served as a second assistant for both defensive backs and special teams)

Notes:

– Entire offensive staff was replaced after the worst showing in franchise history. Peete was initially approached about changing positions, but opted instead to take a job with the Dallas Cowboys.

– Six coaches _ Coe, Cregg, Fuller, Henry, Lal and Schneider, are on NFL staffs for the first time. Fuller worked with the Dallas Cowboys in the scouting department.

– Johnson replaced Taver Johnson, who initially accepted a job with the Raiders only to leave and join Ohio State, coaching defensive backs. Johnson was the defensive line coach for the Chicago Bears last season.

– Coe, 55, was head coach at Alabama State for the past four years. He elected to leave when not offered an extension.

Coe became head coach in 2003 the day before fall practice began after L.C. Cole was fired for violations of NCAA rules, with the school self-imposing sanctions, including the loss of 10 scholarships per season over three seasons.

– Holdovers were Willie Brown (squad development), Jeff Fish (strength and conditioning), Don Martindale (linebackers), George Martinez (quality control, defense), Keith Millard (defensive line) and Rob Ryan (defensive coordinator).

Defensive backs is the only area that really concerns me.

Yeah, but what if he runs really really super duper fast?
