Collins moves back into starting QB role for Raiders

ASSOCIATED PRESS

ALAMEDA, Calif., Dec. 14 — Marques Tuiasosopo's chance to prove himself lasted just one week.
Tuiasosopo was sent back to the bench Wednesday when the Oakland Raiders made another quarterback change, moving Kerry Collins back into the starting role for Sunday's game against Cleveland.

Coach Norv Turner said last week he wanted to give Tuiasosopo an extended look to see if he could revive Oakland's listless offense. Both Collins and Tuiasosopo said it was their understanding after talking to Turner that the move was for the rest of the season.
Even after Tuiasosopo struggled in a four-turnover performance against the New York Jets last Sunday, Turner said it was his intention to give Tuiasosopo another chance. But three days later Turner changed his mind, choosing Collins as the starter.
''Tui's been in this league enough to know there are no certainties, no guarantees,'' Turner said. ''He's disappointed, but he's a very strong guy and a resilient guy. In the right time, the right situation he's going to really be a good player.''
While Turner acknowledged discussing the situation with owner Al Davis and other members of the organization, he said ultimately the call was his and he decided to go with the quarterback he felt gave the team the best chance to win.
''I just felt that it was Kerry. It's not a reflection of Tui and his performance, because he knows there are things he could have done better, but we did not play well around him,'' Turner said. ''We owe it to the guys on this team that are giving as much as they're giving, we owe them the best chance to find a way to win a game.''
Collins admitted that the rotating quarterbacks was ''slightly different.''
''I'm not going to overanalyze it,'' Collins said. ''I'm just going to realize that I've got another opportunity to play this week, which I'm excited about. I'm going to do everything I can to get us a win.''
After a promising start to the season, Collins struggled as the Raiders fell out of playoff contention. Collins didn't throw an interception until his 141st pass in the fifth game of the season, then didn't give up another pick for 95 more attempts. Seven of his 10 interceptions have come in his last four games, including three in a 31-17 home loss to Denver on Nov. 13.
''I think the biggest thing is it gave my body a week to rest,'' Collins said. ''You go through a season and play 12 games to that point, I had a couple of bumps and bruises that were able to get some time to heal.''
Collins has been booed at home and the fans had chanted ''Tui! Tui!'' at recent games, hoping for a change. But after Tuiasosopo's struggles on the road last week, the Oakland fans will get another dose of Collins on Sunday.
The Raiders (4-9) have lost three straight games and are assured of a third straight losing season for the first time since Davis came aboard in 1963 to coach and eventually own the team.
Collins has completed 245 of 446 passes for 3,118 yards and 16 touchdowns, but has been sacked 32 times for 194 lost yards. His lack of mobility was one of the big reasons Turner made the switch to the more athletic Tuiasosopo.
But Tuiasosopo didn't fare any better against the Jets, getting sacked six times and losing two fumbles in a 26-10 loss. He went 14-for-26 for 124 yards with two interceptions.
Even though Collins and Tuiasosopo have different styles, offensive tackle Robert Gallery said it shouldn't alter the task much for an offensive line that has allowed 16 sacks the past three games.
''It may be different for some guys, but your job's your job,'' Gallery said. ''No matter who's back there, you've got to protect and whichever guy's back there, it's the same mind-set for me.''
Tuiasosopo, who was not available for comment, has started only two games since the Raiders drafted him out of Washington in 2001. He started once in 2003, but hurt his knee during Oakland's third offensive series, and hadn't played in a regular-season game since.
''I think a lot of Tui and I think he's going to be a real good player in this league, and sometimes it's just timing,'' Turner said.

Sorry, I realize the cut & past above is a bit un-sightly.

Anyway, what the hell is up with this franchise? This season has become an absolute joke.

I thought Collins would make it work in Oakland - with this group of skill players and though I still point to the offensive line as Public Enemy #1, why play Collins now/again at this point?

We already know what this team can & can't do with Collins at the helm. Is it not more important to see what we have in Tui and/or Walter? Even if Collins is handed the starting job in 2006, it would be nice to know if Tui and/or Walter can play if & when neccesary, no?

It seems to me the team has ZERO faith in Tui.

Should I laugh? Cry? Get pissed? Or should I just stop caring alltogether?

You know; this move makes absolutely no sense to me at all. If you have no faith in Tui, you never put him in.

One game? An absolute joke.

If they'd have put Walter in I'd have understood that as not liking what you saw from Tui.

But putting Collins back in? WHY?!?! Win one game? Nonsense! Worth absolutely nothing to the franchise.

Developing what you've got on the bench? That's worth something to the franchise. Maybe keeping Collins happy and using him next season is what it's all about. But that's sending good money after bad.

I'm ashamed!

Sheese. I agree. this organization is the laughing stock of the NFL right now. Nothing they do makes any sense from moving the #2 pick in the draft to RT to Brayton and Grant to OLB to benching Collins for one fucking game to who knows what next.

I'm ashamed of this organization. They have no direction. I really wonder if Davis will even dismiss Turner?

I refuse to believe all the players on this team woke up one morning and forgot how to play football. To me it's all about scheme and coaching these players.

I'm just totally disgusted.

I hope we lose out. But then Al will probably take some unknown speed burner so we'll never get this thing right! Fuck.

Perhaps it was to send Kerry Collins a "message". You know, go stand in the corner for the next hour !!

I still don't get it and WHY bring him back for the Home Game against Cleveland? The crowd will no doubt boo the Raiders from the outset this Sunday. No doubt.

When they make the player intros you think they'll introduce the offense? Bwahahaha. The boos would be..., well let's just say they shouldn't go there.

I fully expect the fans to boo when the offense takes the field the first time. And if Collins throws an incompletion...Katie bar the door! It's gonna be ugly.

Anyway, I sure hope we don't fuck things up and win on Sunday. Cleveland is more than capable of winning this one going away.

If we lose out we have a shot at drafting #5 as I see it. That would give us a good shot at A.J. Hawk, Super Mario or Kiwi. Any of those would be fine with me.

If we win Sunday we're so totally and completely fucked. We'll be drafting around 12-14 --- for what? A win against the Cleveland Fucking Browns? Whoopee!

After last Sunday Collins said there was more wrong with the team than changing QB's could fix. So what do they do? Change QB's again.

Another guy and I were having a debate on Tui or Collins and he said Tui sucks and that Collins could have won the game versus the Jets.

I haven't seen anything from Collins, or the Raiders offense this season that leads me to believe that. There have been plenty of games that played out EXACTLY like the Jets game. We drag our feet in ineffective play for three quarters while the defense tires out (not necessarily from being on the field too long, but definitely longer than they should have been). We get down big, their defense goes a little soft. We score a TD. The Raiders get happy. The opposing defense gets tighter. The Raiders offense collapses often with the QB throwing a late int to seal the loss.

That script has been playing so often this season that I don't blame Tui for repeating it. How could anyone?

I don't blame Tui for last Sunday either. With that pass rush I seriously doubt that Collins would have fared much better - if at all.

Besides, the Raiders "exploded" for 10 points against the Chargers with KC at the helm and "exploded" for another 10 points against the J-E-T-S with Tui.

I need to get back to that Offensive Line discussion because that is the crux of our problems.....

This team AND organization is a mess.

Blame Tui? for what? the man was a sitting duck back there. The Jets were all over him coming right up the middle a lot. There is no blocking going on from that offensive line. It's just horrid.

Now, Turner (allegedly) made the decision to replace Tui with Collins. Huh? Is this guy out of his friggin' mind? What kind of sense does it make to change QB's and then immediately change back the next week? Was Turner expecting Tui to throw for 300 yards and 4 scores and maybe run for another 50 yards? This clown is out of touch. Hearing that Tui was the starter for the rest of the season made sense to me. A four game audition. That's fair. But this? Stupid. Makes no sense. The Raiders are the laughing stock of the entire NFL.

Do you think this smells of Al Davis interference? I just don't know any more. I'm frustrated and ashamed of this team and how things are being run.

Speaking of being "run"...the sooner it happens to Norv Turner and Jimmy Raye the better I'm going to like it.

I've come around on Rob Ryan. The guy has finally made something happen with our defense. Not great but he's making progress.

HEY! Aren't we going to discuss coaches later?

And 9 years later........lol

If Red finds the QBOTF in his 3rd year, all the Schaub and Flynn belly aching is a little ridiculous.

Throw shit up against the wall and see what sticks.

Anybody gonna remember those stiffs when Rodgers Carr is hoisting the Lombardi?
