Training camp, Day 19 (A.M.)

Jerry McDonald

News and notes, sights and sounds from Tuesday morning's practice:

– Lane Kiffin remained in the hospital with a viral infection and missed his second straight practice.

"He's undergoing further tests and he hopes to be back soon," a Raiders spokesman said.

The spokesman described it as a "short-term and not a long-term deal" and was holding out hope Kiffin could return as soon as Tuesday night.

– The Raiders are a little confused with regard to public relations with the head coach out. Moments after a team spokesman said no coach would be speaking with the media, offensive coordinator Greg Knapp talked to a handful of reporters.

Knapp, who said he had not talked to Kiffin since Sunday, spoke to the team in a group after practice, with special teams coordinator Brian Schneider updating players on special teams sessions.

"Training camp is really structured from the get go," Knapp said. "We plan it out before we get here quite a bit. We will tweak it as time goes on. There's a good plan in place so you don't have to have a lot of adjustments right now. And even these first couple of preseason games we're still in training camp mode not in game plan mode. It's planned out pretty well ahead of time with Lane."

– Running back LaMont Jordan practiced for the second consecutive day, running the ball effectively and catching everything that was thrown his way.

During one 7-on-7 drill in the red zone, Jordan circled out of the backfield and caught a wheel route for a touchdown from Josh McCown.

"Good job, LaMont, and good job selling (the route)," running backs coach Tom Rathman said.

Jordan knows his two seasons in Oakland after signing a lucrative free agent contract have not met expectations.

"There's a lot of people questioning whether I'm the guy for the job. And of course at some point pride's going to get in the way, and at some point you're going to want want to make a statement. But it's not something I talk about. Right now the AFC West, I'm clearly the back that's not even in this hemisphere," Jordan said. "When you look at Travis Henry, Larry Johnson and LaDainian, I'm not even mentioned on the same page as those guys. That's something that I would like to change. I have to do my part, the offensive line has to do their part, us as a team, we have to do our part."

– Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper were going through a drill where they were taking turns throwing corner routes against no defenders near the front pylon of the end zone, McCown to his left and Culpepper to his right.

McCown left some of his passes to the back of the receiver, where a defender could in theory get a hand on the ball. Culpepper's passes consistently either hit the receiver or went out of bounds.

– During a goal line drill in a team session, Culpepper inexplicably forced a pass toward the left corner to Travis Taylor. Chris Carr had perfect position and made the interception in the end zone.

– During one team session, Adimchiobe Echemandu circled out of the backfield uncovered, with a defender uttering an audible "damn" before McCown even saw the opening. McCown hit Echemandu for what would have been a 50-yard plus play, with Thomas Howard and Stuart Schweigert arriving late for the defense.

– Andrew Walter, who a year ago was the quarterback of the future, has steadily gone about his business as the Raiders have drafted JaMarcus Russell and signed Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper.

He is choosing his words carefully when questioners expressed some surprise at his preseason performance against Arizona.

"Football is a team game. It's never all just one player," Walter said. "When everything is working it looks good. That's not a surprise to me or anybody in the locker room. But apparently it is a surprise to people outside and that's fine."

– Wide receiver Mike Williams has snagged a first-down reception under tight coverage from Fabian Washington, who was draped all over Williams at the time of the catch.

It's been a scene replayed several times during camp. On one hand, Williams has been able to make catches under duress. On the minus side, Williams doesn't often gain the separation you'd want, meaning passes are more at risk to be intercepted.

I appreciate Walters confidence in the face of all these qb's in the mix. Pretty good test to find out how much he's really worth. He'll face more competition as Mccown and DC both get more in tune with the offense. Lets see if hecan raise his game too.

IMO McCown could be odd man out.

I'm thinking we may end up keeping all 4... Walter, McCown, Russell and Culpepper

McCown is also WR #6-7

I'm beginning to think we may keep four, too. The Patriots kept four during Tom Brady's rookie year. On the other hand, for a team as young as the Raiders, it's hard to justify having three guys on your bench who have no chance of contributing unless someone gets hurt.

Raiders hope Kiffin will return by Saturday

Michael Wagaman

Aug 14, 2007

Raiders coach Lane Kiffin remained in a Napa hospital Tuesday getting treatment for a viral infection but the team is hopeful he’ll be back on the sidelines for Saturday’s preseason game in San Francisco.

"He needs some further tests and he hopes to be back soon," said team spokesman John Herrera.

Kiffin was initially taken to the Queen of the Valley Medical Center on Monday morning for observation but wound up being kept overnight. His condition had not changed by Tuesday so additional tests were ordered.

As they had on Monday, offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan presided over practice, though the team believes Kiffin will return in time for the game against the 49ers.

"I would sure think so," Herrera said. "All we can do is take it day by day."

Oakland’s first practice Tuesday -- the team also has a night practice slated to begin at 7 p.m. -- was very similar to the first workout the team held without Kiffin, particularly the quietness.

Running back LaMont Jordan said Kiffin had set a good enough tone in practice before getting sick that the practice wouldn’t lag without him.

"The most important thing he’s done is he’s come in and been consistent," Jordan said. "The way he was on Day 1 is the way he was the last time we saw him. He’s made it fun to play football again."

We can place Michael Bush on the PUP list to start the season. He is on there now and hasn't practiced as far as I know...he has just worked out. That move would leave his roster spot open until as long as ten weeks...could be shorter too.... seven weeks.

At that time, we will best know what the quarterack situation is going to be like. If one of our quarterbacks is doing well consistently, we can then cut either one of the quarterbacks that are under one year contracts.

I'd rather keep 4 qb's than give one of those spots to Alvis Whitted:pound: Anyone hear Jaws comments on ESPN last night? In a nut shell, "Jamarcus get your ass in camp" I want so badly to punch Kornholio in the face. Dude spews nothing but venom towards the Raiders He has no business doing color commentary. I thought Jaws put him in his place when Kornholio said that Bill Walsh scripted the first 20 plays of a game and basically dared the defense to stop him, to which Jaws said that adjustments were still made during the course of those plays. What a douche.

I have to do my part, the offensive line has to do their part, us as a team, we have to do our part."

Psst Lamont... In case you were wondering, your part includes little things like knowing the playbook, being in shape and you know, actually suiting up and practicing...

Now that's a great idea.

Kiffin still absent, but he leaves prints

NAPA - Still no Lane Kiffin.

He stayed in the hospital Monday night with a viral infection and was having tests run today. Kiffin hopes to return soon, but no one know when "soon" is.

The infection didn't stop him from watching game tape Sunday night, but it has kept him out of the last two practices, including this morning's.

But he already has made an impression on the team. Even some of the coaches are talking like Kiffin.

Tight end Tony Stewart committed a false start during team session. If Kiffin were around, he would've yelled, "Get me a new tight end."

Someone did yell that: offensive coordinator Greg Knapp.

• I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to playing "Madden 08" today. I'm doing the honorable thing and working and not calling in sick or going home before the 7 p.m. practice to play the game.

Too bad Jarrod Cooper isn't here. Last year, Cooper said he benched Jerry Porter on "Madden 07" because Art Shell benched Porter in real life.

I wonder if Cooper would have signed Daunte Culpepper and cut JaMarcus Russell until he signed with the team.

The only way to see Russell with the Raiders is on the video game.

• Josh McCown and Andrew Walter still are splitting first-team snaps while Daunte Culpepper catches up on the playbook.

• Derrick Burgess looks healthy. He has one of the best first steps at defensive end in the NFL. If the Raiders could win more games, he'd get a lot more praise nationally.

Raiders Team Report

August 14, 2007

Steve Corkran

The Raiders cut veteran TE Randal Williams less than two weeks into camp in a move that surprised many of his teammates. Williams and last season's starting tight end, Courtney Anderson, have been jettisoned in a span of two weeks. Part of that stems from the stellar play of rookie Zach Miller, who has caught everything thrown his way during camp and met the high expectations the Raiders had for him when they selected him in the second round of the NFL draft in April. ...

DE Derrick Burgess participated in full-squad drills for the first time at training camp, a month or so after he underwent hernia surgery. Burgess appears to be in fine shape and ready to add a third straight Pro Bowl selection to his resume. Burgess spent most of the offseason working out on his own. He said he won't let his dissatisfaction over not receiving a restructured contract affect his play this season.

NEWCOMER REPORT: Free-agent acquisition Cornell Green has worked his way into the a spot as the projected starter at right offensive tackle. This makes sense given his considerable edge over the competition in NFL experience. Green has outperformed players such as Paul McQuistan and Chad Slaughter since offseason workouts started in March and worked his way into an enviable position. Green's ability to grasp new line coach Tom Cable's zone-blocking scheme and his solid fundamentals have made him the logical choice as the successor to departed veteran Langston Walker. Green now has to carry over his solid play into Oakland's exhibition games before he is assured of starting the season at right offensive tackle.

SCOUTING REPORT: S Donovin Darius' play so far has validated the Raiders' decision to gamble on signing him in light of his injury-filled seasons of late. Darius has a penchant for being around the ball, is rarely out of position, and he helps out his teammates with what to look for in specific situations. Darius is competing for a starting spot but so far is penciled in only as an extra defensive back when the Raiders remove a linebacker. It wouldn't be surprising to see the Raiders insert Darius into the starting lineup at some point this season, especially if he avoids injury and keeps making his presence felt in games.

For some reason this got cut off again....... here's the rest.......

– RB Michael Bush said he hopes to be activated from the physically unable to perform list and said he has not been told he will be placed on injured reserve this season.

"I’m not even close to thinking about I.R.," Bush said. "If you’re out here you see the stuff they put me through, running-wise, and you think, why is he not out there? But, I feel good every day, though."

Bush said at the NFL scouting combine and during minicamps and OTAs he expected to be ready for training camp. However, Bush discovered once he started running and pushing himself he would need more time.

Bush's leg, broken last year in the opener at Louisville, has a visible lump. Bush said the strength of the bone is not a problem.

"That’s where I broke it. You look at X-rays, it’s all nothing but bone," Bush said. "It’s solid. That part of my leg is probably the strongest part of my leg. And I’ve still got the rod in it so I know it’s not going anywhere."

There are some within the organization who believe Bush will eventually be placed on injured reserve and won't play for the Raiders this season.

– Defensive end Chris Clemons, who has seen time with the first nickel defense, missed practice with a hamstring pull and said he hopes to be able to face San Francisco. Others who missed practice included CB Duane Starks (hamstring), CB Stanford Routt (knee), T Chad Slaughter (ankle) and DT Josh Shaw (knee).

– G Ben Claxton, battling a knee injury and relegated to riding a stationary bike for most of camp, was waived.

"There are some within the organization who believe Bush will eventually be placed on injured reserve and won't play for the Raiders this season."

I hope he's not put on IR. Rhodes, Jordan, and Echamandu/Fargas should be able to handle the load but to me those guys are all just filler. We need a stud back and Bush can be that if he's anything like the beast he was in college. Best case scenario is he gets PUP'd for about 8 games and shows off his stuff in the second half of the season. I'd hate to see him miss the entire year because that would mean he hadn't seen live game action in two years.

Question off topic for the forum...Would all of you agree that if B.J. Ward continues to improve he should be our starting strong safety? The dude is huge (6'3" 225) and a lethal hitter - something we haven't really had since the days of Tatum/Atkisson. I'd love to see him develop alongside Huff to give us one of the most formidable secondaries in the NFL. Plus he has that aggressive, kick-ass attitude - perfect mentality for our defense. Stu just doesn't seem to be panning out and Huff looks more like a FS to me anyway.

Freakshow - If Lane Kiffin is true to his word that the "best players will play" than yes. If BJ Ward (who is rapidly rising a Raider Nation favorite BTW) is playing the best ball, he should start.

I love the way he drops the hammer on people.

Not very encouraging news on Bush but I still think it was well gambling a 4th for him. I don't see any sense in rushing him back at this point. Even if he could play, I'm wondering how effective he would be. My main concern is that he'd have missed the better part of two seasons.

Who would have thought our new head coach and #1 drat pick would both not be a training camp! Ouch.

Training camp, Day 19 (P.M.)

Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on Tuesday at 9:18 pm

News and notes, sights and sounds from Tuesday night's practice:

– Lane Kiffin missed his third practice with a viral infection, but a team spokesman said he should be back soon.

"We're very optimistic Lane will be back shortly, hopefully tomorrow," the spokesman said. "We don't know that for sure, but we're optimistic he'll be back very soon."

– Defensive tackle Terdell Sands did not practice and was seen leaving the field area in the early stages of the session. A spokesman said Sands was "held out" and did not elaborate.

– Defensive tackle Jared Clauss was signed to the roster and immediately saw action with the second team and in goal line situations. Clauss was a seventh round draft pick by Tennessee in 2004, played for Washington in 2005 and did not play last season, although he was property of the Redskins. Clauss wore No. 72.

– Clauss was the roommate of left guard Robert Gallery all four years at the University of Iowa.

Clauss also got the better on a pass rush drill against Paul McQuistan, who normally fares well in one-one drill situations.

– Andrew Walter hit Curry on a 30-yard corner route on the play of the day, a slighly wobbly but well-thrown touch pass into double coverage in which Curry made the catch against Chris Carr and Hiram Eugene.

On the next play, Curry made a parallel dive near the sideline to gather in a pass despite the protest of rookie Eric Frampton, who incorrectly claimed the ball hit the ground.

– During a team goal line session at the end of practice got the ball in the end zone several times from the 3-yard-line against the defense.

Walter hit Zach Miller and John Madsen for touchdowns on consecutive plays, and Jake McCown made a nice pump fake and located Jerry Porter racing across the backline of the end zone for a score.

– Madsen continues to have an outstanding camp catching the ball and is playing well enough to be an integral part of the Raiders offense at both tight end and occasionally as a slot receiver.

– DT Warren Sapp suited up and participated in drills but was mostly a spectator during team sessions.

– Defensive tackle Tommy Kelly jumped offsides on one play and remained on the field. In almost every case when Kiffin is on the field, the offending player is removed from the game for at least one play.

– The defense harrassed and harried the offense into one of its poorest sequences in camp on plays with the offense starting at its own 40. All three quarterbacks were unable to get anything going except for one play _ a nice gain on a seam route from Walter to Mike Williams over Fabian Washington.

Most of the other passes were not even close, either through bad timing, blown routes or defensive pressure. McCown threw up one balloon under pressure that barely made it out of bounds.

– Those who did not practice aside from Sands were CB Duane Starks (hamstring), CB Stanford Routt (knee), DE Chris Clemons (hamstring), C Jeremy Newberry (rest) and T Chad Slaughter (ankle).

– The Raiders have one practice scheduled Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. and have one more double session Thursday at 8:45 a.m. and 7 p.m. A walkthrough is scheduled for Friday, with the team heading back to Alameda to practice Monday.

No Sands at practice

NAPA - One of the Raiders biggest players was missing from tonight's practice.

Defensive tackle Terdell Sands was held for undisclosed reasons. No explanation as to whether he's injured or just in trouble. He practiced this morning.

Maybe its just coincidence, but the Raiders signed defensive tackle Jared Clauss. Clauss is from Iowan and in his third pro season after time with the Titans and Redskins. He practiced tonight and easily beat Paul McQuistan in a pass blocking drill in his first work against the offense.

With defensive tackle Josh Shaw still out with a knee injury and Sands not practicing, Clauss saw a lot of action tonight.

Besides drills, he played a lot in the goal line package.

*There was finally some hitting following Saturday's preseason game. The players were in shoulder pads and shorts and did had some one-on-one pass blocking drills.

There were some good match ups. Among the high lights were linebacker Ricky Brown using a swim move to dismiss Dominic Rhodes block.

Sam Williams vs. LaMont Jordan made for a loud collision.

No one could really block Thomas Howard.

In offensive line vs. defensive line drills, Tyler Brayton got to yapping again after getting beat by the offensive line.

The drill called for two offensive lineman to block two defenders. Tackle Mario Henderson blocked his man (Quentin Moses) down and then knocked Brayton down.

I don't think Brayton liked getting pushed in the back, but all is fair in the trenches.

*In team scrimmaging, the offense started off with nice plays with catches by Zach Miller and Mike Williams from Andrew Walter.

Then the defense took over the rest of the way.

*And finally, Lane Kiffin will spend tonight in the hospital with a viral infection is the latest words from the Raiders.

They are "optimistic" he will be back soon.

No one knows when soon is.
