Training camp, Day 13 (A.M.)
Posted by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on August 8th, 2007

News and notes, sights and sounds from Wednesday morning's practice:

– Josh McCown will start quarterback Saturday night against Arizona at McAfee Coliseum, with Andrew Walter and Daunte Culpepper to follow.

"Josh has done a really good job and shown a lot of leadership in the way he handled himself during the scrimmage on the sidelines and around the team,' Kiffin said. "Next game it may be opposite."

McCown viewed it as Step 1 in the process to become the Raiders starter in Week 1.

"It was a goal of mine, but would I have been completely down in the dumps if I didn’t start? No," McCown said.

– A scout team was employed for the first time to simulate the offense and defense of the Cardinals, a situation which gave No. 4 quarterback Jeff Otis his most extensive work of training camp.

At one point, as players assembled in the huddle, Kiffin became impatient and yelled, `C'mon, we're wasting time. Let's go."

Following practice, Kiffin said, "We've got to get better at that because that's what's going to make us good, the looks that we give on the other side of the ball and the speed that we work at in practice so we can keep a high speed even though we put in the backup guys in those situations.

– Kiffin said offensive coordinator Greg Knapp will work from the press box Saturday night. Knapp, worked from the sideline as the play-caller for the Atlanta Falcons. Kiffin will call the plays for the Raiders. When calling plays at USC, Kiffin worked from the press box.

"I'm going to see how it goes," Kiffin said. "That's where we're going to start and I'm going to experiment with a couple people up, a couple people down in different situations. We're going to start that way."

– Otis threw both practice interceptions, one to Nnamdi Asomugha and another to Thomas Howard.

– Free agent linebacker Kyle Shotwell had a sack of Culpepper, but later fell well behind Adimchinobe Echemandu in pass coverage during a seven-on-seven drill, prompting a "C'mon, Shotwell!" from linebackers coach Don Martindale.

– At this point, it appears the job of long-snapper is Jon Condo's to lose. The Condo has snapped consistently since camp began and the coaches like the fact that as a linebacker, he is an effective tackler in coverage.

"We’re going to give him a shot to take this thing and run with it and see how far he can go," Kiffin said.

– Split end Jerry Porter raced past a strangely passive Marquice Cole under a long strike from McCown.

– Not long after running backs coach procliamed it "No Drop Wednesday," wide receiver Chris McFoy had a McCown strike clank off his hands.

– Rookie Mario Henderson was getting most of his reps at right tackle, a situation that bears watching if journeyman Cornell Green struggles on that side.

– Fullback Justin Griffith took reps with the scout team and has had a relatively quiet training camp. It's unclear if that means Griffith has fallen behind Zack Crockett and rookie Oren O'Neil at fullback, or if the coaching staff is already counting on Griffith to be on the roster and is instead pitting Crockett against O'Neil.

– Defensive tackle Warren Sapp was given the practice session off. Those who missed practice due to injury included DT Josh Shaw, CB Duane Starks (hamstring), CB John Bowie (Achilles), RB LaMont Jordan (back), C Jeremy Newberry (off) and CB Stanford Routt (knee).

Kiffin said Shaw, Jordan and Burgess would not face Arizona and that a number of other players are questionable.

– The Raiders will leave Napa Thursday for the Raider Nation celebration then will stay in Oakland, holding their final walkthrough at their practice facility in Alameda Friday.

I will be very interested to watch the QB play. I'm interested in seeing:
McCown against the #1's
Walter face a blitz
Walter's release timing
Culpepper run the two or four minute drill
Culpepper's mobility.

Other interesting points are:
Jordan and Burgess out - this is a precaution I know but that means we'll see more of Adimchinobe Echemandu and Huntley against the #1's.

Will Oaklands preseason games be on tv? If so what chanell?

Raiders' Pro Bowl DE still on the mend from hernia surgery, will skip preseason opener

NAPA, Calif. - Derrick Burgess might be healthy enough to practice with the Oakland Raiders, but he's still not ready to play in a game.

Burgess was ruled out of Saturday's preseason opener against Arizona by coach Lane Kiffin, who says the team will continue to take a cautious approach with its two-time Pro Bowl defensive end.

"I just don't want to put Derrick out there right now," Kiffin said. "He's only been back for a couple days and it's not worth it to put him out there full speed right now. We've got three more games after this."

Burgess only started practicing with the rest of his teammates this week after beginning training camp on the physically unable to perform list as a result of hernia surgery in June. He took minimal reps with Oakland's starting defense Wednesday, but spent most of the morning practice as a spectator.

Fourth-year veteran Chris Clemons and rookie Jay Richardson alternated working in Burgess' absence. The Raiders have also been taking a long look at third-round draft pick Quentin Moses, who has been working on the opposite end of Burgess with Oakland's starters.

Burgess, who has 27 sacks over the last two seasons and set a franchise record two years ago with 16, is in no rush to hurry back.

"You always need preseason just to get the rust off; it's not more important than my body," Burgess said. "So I need to make sure I'm healthy enough and well enough to come in and do what I do. There's no such thing as game shape because you're always going to be tired. It's just a fact of me being comfortable with my body and what I'm doing."

Burgess hoped to become more financially comfortable in the offseason.

Entering the third year of a five-year, $18 million deal he signed as a free agent in 2005, Burgess says he was led to believe the team would renegotiate his contract after reaching double-digit sacks in each of the past two seasons. Senior personnel executive Mike Lombardi was fired in May, however, and no new offer ever came.

The Raiders have reasons for holding off on a new deal for Burgess. They have yet to sign their first-round draft pick, quarterback JaMarcus Russell, and will likely have to pay close to $30 million in guaranteed money to get him in. Burgess, on the other hand, is signed through 2009 and only carries a $1.5 million base salary this year.

"Hopefully they decide they want to give me a new contract, cool," Burgess said. "If not, hey, it's a business, you got to remember that. The only part I want everybody to understand, like I tell the young cats, always treat it like one. That's it."

The Raiders are hoping to give Burgess some relief on the field after two years of being the focal point in Oakland's pass rush.

Moses has been the most impressive rookie in camp and has been practicing with the team's starting defense since the first day of camp. Kiffin has called Moses "unblockable" and routinely praises the former Georgia standout.

"I'm getting a lot of reps because some people are down, so I'm just trying to go out and get better with each practice," Moses said. "My thing is consistency. I'll have one good practice then six bad ones. It's the NFL and it's hard to win if you're not consistent."

Raiders' Williams a top receiver? Wait and see
Mike Williams getting a chance with Raiders

NAPA - Weight and waiting. Both have been issues for Mike Williams.

The wide receiver sat out of football for 19 months after a failed attempt to enter the NFL after his sophomore season at USC.

He entered the NFL in 2005 with the weight of being the 10th overall pick in the draft by the Detroit Lions.

Later, his weight became a problem.

Now, he is waiting to see if he will make the Raiders' opening-day roster.

Sure, his weight has been an issue with the Raiders, Williams said, but not as much as it was during a tumultuous two-year stint in Detroit, where things soured so badly that he landed behind quarterback Josh McCown on the depth chart. At wide receiver.

"When I (check) in, it's just about football," Williams said. "I don't have to worry about the coaches being on me about this, or the organization on me about that. It's a relief. That's the last thing I'm worried about now. It's a long road ahead of me."

Williams' road to where he stands today was filled with legal potholes, organizational obstacles and continuous tests of his resolve.

Few envisioned such a bumpy ride for a player who totaled 176 receptions for 2,570 yards and 30 touchdowns in two seasons at USC.

His troubles began when he hired an agent and declared himself eligible for the 2004 draft. A court ruling blocked Williams from entering the NFL before his junior season, and the NCAA compounded matters by refusing to reinstate his eligibility.

All seemed right again when the Lions drafted Williams in the first round. He caught 29 passes for 350 yards and one touchdown his rookie season under Coach Steve Mariucci but all but disappeared last season under new coach Rod Marinelli and offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

Williams sparred with coaches, showed up late to meetings and missed prescribed weigh-in targets during a season in which he caught only eight passes for 99 yards and one touchdown. The Lions traded him and McCown to the Raiders for a fourth-round pick in April.

Williams said he wondered, "What's next?" when the Lions fired Mariucci after the 2005 season. Martz tipped him off by informing Williams that he "wasn't his kind of guy" coming out of college.

Raiders Coach Lane Kiffin was an assistant coach at USC when Williams, 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, ran roughshod over defensive backs. Kiffin intends to capitalize on Williams' size and not let it be a distraction.

"That is a value, obviously, his size and being able to keep people away from him," Kiffin said. "That goes back to when he's right, he's a dangerous red-zone player. There are good ways to use him down there, but he's got to get better."

Signs of Williams' progress showed during a recent practice when he beat standout cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha on two plays that he turned into touchdowns.

That's the player McCown remembers seeing last season, when both were relegated to long stints on the sideline.

"Mike can be a really good receiver in this league," McCown said. "He's got unbelievable talent. It's just him getting in a comfort level to make the most of his talents."

McCown will start exhibition opener

Josh McCown will start the preseason opener Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals at the Coliseum.

Lane Kiffin made the announcement after this morning's practice.

That's not shocking.

McCown has been the most consistent quarterback. Andrew Walter still throws too many interceptions. Daunte Culpepper is still catching up on the playbook.

He was the favorite to start before Culpepper arrived and is still probably leading the race because he's familiarized himself with the offense since May.

Kiffin still plans to give the quarterbacks equal reps, but McCown will have the advantage of playing with the first-team offense, which should cut down on some of the mistakes around him.

And with the starting offensive line, McCown has the best chance of escaping the game not battered.

It's not that the group has proven it can pass block. But if the first-team struggles, imagine what Culpepper and Walter will endure behind their backups.

Thankfully for McCown, he can run.

--Jason Jones

Andrew Walter still throws too many interceptions.
I have no problem with McCown starting.

But what are they comparing? McCown throwing 38 INTS and Walter 44? We're splitting hairs I'm afraid.
