Panthers have few options in search for another QB

CHARLOTTE -- The Carolina Panthers know they have to add another quarterback. The problem is finding one they'd want.

With the market for free agents effectively dead --and getting picked over more by the passing day -- the Panthers' best option to replace Jake Delhomme on the roster would most likely come via trade.
The one name that rises to the top of that list would be Oakland's Andrew Walter, a former third-round pick from Arizona State.
Walter kept a job in Oakland thanks to No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell's holdout, but now that he's in camp, they have a full depth chart with Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper. The Raiders have made it known for weeks that he's available.
The problem with a trade is that the Panthers would have to further deplete their preferred resource --draft picks. They already gave up next year's fifth-rounder for Chicago safety Chris Harris, when they fell short at that position in training camp.
There's a school of thought that would make former Dallas (but more importantly, New England) starter Drew Bledsoe a fit, but he's said to be happily retired. Other free agents on the market include Tim Hasselbeck and Tim Rattay, though Rattay is rumored to be on Arizona's radar this week.
Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said Monday night the team was still looking at options, but that no workouts were held Monday or scheduled for today. "We have a pretty good idea who's out there," Hurney said

It'd be nice if we could wrangle a conditional pick from the Panthers in time to activate Mr. Bush.

Fabian Washington-DB- Raiders Oct. 6 - 2:35 pm et

The Oakland Tribune speculates that CB Fabian Washington could be available in a trade.

Washington recently lost his job to Stanford Routt. The paper goes so far as to speculate that Oakland may have interest in dealing Washington for DeAngelo Hall, although Hall has denied he ever requested a trade. Hall is in the final year of his deal, while Washington has three seasons remaining.

Sorry, Bones can you please delete that repeated thread......

I wouldn't move Fabian Washington for DeAngelo Hall for contract reasons alone.

Me thinks that something is "fishy" with the Raiders & Washington....

I like Fabian Washington. He's got talent, speed, desire, and self confidnce. However, he hasn't progressed the way most would like and I'd take a trade with DeAngelo Hall in a heartbeat! That cat is physically gifted and a true play maker. I'd even throw in Stu for good measure!

Trading Walter makes a ton of sense, particularly for a team in need like Carolina. If draft picks won't work, I'd take an unproven, emerging linebacker, safety, or lineman on either side in return.

How could we possibly afford to do contracts for Aso, Burgess and Hall?

I'm no cap-oligist and I don't know how far under we are, but I would cut some of the dead weight to make room. If it's even possible I'd rid the books of Schweigert, Brayton, and Sam Williams for starters. Restructuring other contracts of guys like Sapp and Sims could help too. Cullpepper will be off the books next year so that'll free up another 3+ million.

If there's a will there's a way and guys like Hall don't come along very often, assuming he is even on the market. We'd be stupid not to try to make that work. Aso and Hall on the outside with Huff and one more safety would make our secondary one of, if not the best in the league.

If anyone needs to learn a lesson about not giving up on a talented player too early, they only need to look at the guy playing on the other side of the field.

Some people would have traded Aso for a box of hair after his first two seasons.

DeAngelo Hall. Really? You people really want that guy? His complete meltdown, and very public beatdowns by good WRs isn't enough to scare you off?

All name, all rep. Way, way overrated.

I don't think getting rid of Schweig, Brayton and Sam will have much impact on our salary cap next season. Sam is a UFA after this season anyway and I suspect he'll test the open market. Sapp and Sims are eating up a healthy chunk of our cap. I doubt we bring Sapp back at age 34-35 unless he agrees to a huge restructuring which is unlikely. If Mario Henderson is ready to step in next season, then we'll also have a decison to make with Sims.

I just don't see the point in bringing in a Deangelo Hall who's in his contract year, especially with Aso looking for a new deal. I'd rather address the DL position and look for a pass rusher to play opposite Burgess. I'd rather throw the coin at someone like a Jared Allen or trade Fabs to the Giants for one of their De's.

As much as they take here... Schweig and Sam Williams are starting for a reason... there is noone better behind them. Sam fits this very well as he's doing dirty work while Howard and Morrison are being stars because of it. Brayton might shuffle loose eventually but he's done enough to stay. Trying to put a very overrated CB on the books in addition to extending Burgess and Aso in the next couple years - not a good idea. I'd rather get a DT/DE that can pressure the QB

I don't know bro. I know Fabs is young and can develop but in his third year he seems to be regressing, not progressing. He's not even a starter for us anymore...

Hall isn't over-rated. He made the pro-bowl last year and is one of the best young corners around. He had a pick-6 last week. Yes, he's a hot head and can be had on occasion but so can every other corner in the league.

That said, I'd be up for giving Routt another season or two as the starter if we couldn't land a guy like Hall. In my book he's got greater upside than Washington and if he sticks, we'll be looking great.

Along those lines, wtf is the deal with John Bowie? I LOVE that we got rid of Moss but drafting a guy who barely made the team and hasn't been activated looks like a horrible value in return. Our scouting department needs to be better than that.

It could be something as simple as Darren Perry coming from a system in Pitt that relied on their corners to stick their nose in and play physical... Fabs putting a Deion Sanders like tackling effort vs the Donx put Routt into the starting lineup real quick like, didn't it?...

Aso and Routt on the outsides with Fabs playing the slot works for me... Personally, I like having two long corners out there...

If we can trade Washington for an undeveloped speed rusher or a fat ass in the middle who still might be a year or 2 away... I say do it. We have a lot bigger needs to fill in the front 7 than keeping a slot CB...

I'm also not a fan of trading players in their rookie deals. If we have any hopes of resigning our own FAs and going after a key unrestricted FA or 2 this summer, we really need to hang onto as many of these younger contracts as we can.

Lastly, I hope we keep Walter around. Looking ahead towards next year, Russell appears to be the only untouchable QB. Unless DC plays big this year and the Raiders plan on putting an assload of money into the QB position to keep him and Russell, letting go of Walter for some random draft pick makes absolutely no sense at all...

That's pretty much the way I'd prefer it. Put Asomugha and Routt on the outside and let Fabian play slot. Routt has some size, speed, and skills, but he's completely uncomfortable (and ineffective) as the nickel. Keep him outside. Fabian, meanwhile, is quick and changes direction well (a good thing when you're often unable to jam the guy at the line anyway).

To me, Asomugha and Routt outside with Fabian playing slot just seems to make perfect sense.

Oh... and I wouldn't want to trade Washington for DeAngelo Hall.

A quick question. How many of us like our depth at CB?

If we've soured on Washington, and know Carr isn't a starter, does it make a lot of sense to trade Washington for anything other than a CB? Personally, I think Hall is over-rated, but you never know what a change of scenery might do for a guy. However, I'd rather do that in the off-season in the event his personality clashes with coaches.

If Asomugha or Routt get injured, I'd be satisfied with Washington coming off the bench. Carr... not so much.

I think HB nails it when he talks about physical play at CB having won Routt the job. If you want a run-stopping defense your corners have to shed traditionally weak-blocking WR's and make solid hits on RB's. If your CB gets blown off the ball, you'll be giving yards up in chunks. If your CB makes half-hearted tackle attempts, the same will be true.

So why would I be satisfied with Washington off the bench? Simple, the scheme could be adjusted to minimize his weak tackling. Right now, with healthy personnel, the coaches have decided to limit their on-field liabilities and play the scheme straight up without adjustments. I like it.

Absolutely.

I think our depth at CB is stronger than our depth at any other position on our defense. So I'm less concerned about trading "a CB", and more interested in picking up some talent at DE, DT, and Safety.

Maybe it's me but I don't think Carr is that bad Rupert, for a forth CB that is..........I like what we have, BUT let's face it Hall is better and has more upside then Routt or Washington. So what ever. I would be happy with what we have and if we got Hall. His attitude may not that be that bad with guys like Aso, Sapp and Burgess around...

Our depth at CB might be 'stronger' than any other position, but we still don't have depth.

After our pro bowler (Who, god forbid could opt out next season) we have 2 mediocre youngsters in Fabs and Routt and scrubs like Carr, Bowie and Chris Johnson after them. Johnson and Bowie havent even been active yet, IIRC.

The only trade I would welcome would be getting rid of Walter for a draft pick, or perhaps picking up an edge rusher (Philly and NYG have a ton, and both need CB's...)

Im not worried about QB, because we can always re-sign McCown or C-Pep or go after another veteran to backup Russell.

No real disagreement from me and I also like Routt/Asomugha as the starting tandem with Washington at the nickel. I was speaking more to the notion of trading him at this juncture. Dude is locked up for 3 more years and it's not as though he's gone Phillip Buchanon on us.
