Tom Rathman new RB coach...

we should have a chance to draft a good one the second day.

In 2004, Rathman tutored Kevin Jones, who rushed for 1,133 yards, tops among rookies in the NFL that season and the best rookie season by a Lions running back since Barry Sanders in 1989.
please get AP. Also i must say that some of that was cory schlesenger, dude was injured early, then when he came back, no rb in the league out rushed kevin jones for the second half of the season if i remember correctly.

Brian Leonard would be a great pick too. He is just the kind of worker you need to get the chains moving. A good O-cordinator would have a field day working this guy in the rotation at FB/HB and even TE. If we dont go with AP we HAVE to selcet either M.Bush or Leonard. I like Lynch but AP is going to be a monster.

wow we are gonna have one hell of a staff on the offensive side!

A look at the rushing stats when Rathman is RB Coach

Rathman has been pretty succesful getting production from his talent.
Here's a look at what his teams did year by year.

Not too shabby...

yea but i can see that when he does have the legit talent there, not even he can squeeze water out of that rock.

I think I undestand what you meant?? Bryson isn't going to help the #'s.

Here's a look at the Raiders Rushing since 2000

Year ........ATT..YRD..AVG..TD
2006 Totals 394 1519 3.9 5
2005 Totals 361 1369 3.8 11
2004 Totals 327 1295 4.0 10

2001 Totals 450 1654 3.7 14
2000 Totals 520 2470 4.8 23

The average here breaks down to 412 attempts for 1553 yards and 14 Td's

Rathman's average (448 carries per year for 1943 yards and 11 TD's) compares to the Raiders at their height of their AFC West Dominance (2000-2002).
And when he had the talent he kicked ass! I would put our talent as somewhere above the Lions (2002-2005) and below the 49ers of 1997-2002.

i'd put a ? on our talent rushing wise. Lamont would probably be the slowest lead back he's had to work with since olandis gary and is coming off an injury that could make him slower. Fargas is a guy I like, but i'd be a fool to bank our season on him being healthy. Health is a big concern for me with those two. If they remain healthy, I still gotta see if Lamont Jordan is good enough to run in this system, which i'm guessing requires slower backs to hit their holes with no bs shuffling.

Assuming we go Calvin Johnson or Demarcus Russell in the draft, I still think we'll chase a RB on Day-1.

I'd like to part ways with Jordan & go with Fargas, our Day-1 draft selection and Rashard Lee at HB. BTW, crazy as it might sound, Rashard Lee is a decent football player that could be fairly solid if this line improved. (shrug)

Anyway, back to Rathman, I hope this signals a return to the true FB in our scheme. A guy that can p/u the blitz like a madman, catch the flare in the flat and most importantly, be a fucking Head Crunching lead blocker.

How can a team claim to be physical if they don't employ a FB? Maybe I'm just Old School.

Interesting.

You do know that Garrison Hearst was the third overall pick in 1993 and had a damn solid NFL career?

He tore it up under Rathman's guidance and broke the Niners franchise record for rushing yards and total yards (Recently beat by Frank Gore)

He wen't to two Pro Bowls under Rathman and never dipped below the mythical 4.0 YPC...

Hell even Charlie Garner was BY FAR his best when with the Niner's, getting 1800+ total yards in 99 and 2000.

I dunno man, but it seems as though Rathman has done very well at getting production out of his backs...

Totally agree on all counts. I know I'm in the minority when I say that I saw enough from Fargas and Lee to go with them into next year and take my chances.. but I think we've got other pressing needs that need to be addressed. Today, I'm leaning towards Calvin Johnson, especially if we can trade down a couple of spots and still pick him up. He's our next "Tim Brown" probowler.

i'm sorry, but fan favorite underdog aside, what did Lee do outside of catching 20 screen passes?

Yup. I go back & forth between Calvin Johnson and DeMarcuss Russell. In an ideal world, we already have our QB in Andrew Walter (wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall in Raider HQ these days?), we then do whatever it takes to rid ourselves of Moss & Porter, draft Calvin Johnson, our "next Tim Brown" and perhaps that Zach Miller kids to play TE for us?

This linchpin here is Andrew Walter obviously. I hope he is the guy and the Raiders see "it". That would make our decision much easier IMO.

There was 1 game where he received significant touches, rushed for about 80 yards and caught a few passes as well. The guy has decent size, is pretty decisive at hitting the hole, can p/u a blitz well and catch the rock.

I always like versatile football players. Sort of like Randy Jordan a few years back.

On top of all that, his salary is the lower margins so it's not as though he's commanding significant dollars ala LaMont Jordan - whom BTW is returning from an MCL injury.

Hey JaRaiderIVLife -- get your shit together. :D
