Meet Your First Place Oakland Raiders

Okay, who had the Raiders in the office pool? I'll be honest, if, during the preseason, I was given a million-to-one odds on Oakland leading the AFC West a month into the season, I would've passed. Wouldn't have been worth the dollar. I mean, this is a team that has won 15 games and gone through three coaches since making it to the Super Bowl in 2002.

And now, four games into the Lane Kiffin era, Oakland is 2-2. With the Broncos getting smoked by the Chargers this afternoon, the Raiders sit atop the division all by themselves. Obviously, we're only a quarter into the season, and Oakland has five division games remaining, but ... well, Oakland is in first place. This would be news if it was the preseason; that the games actually count makes it a page-one, above-the-fold story.

Tampa Bay and Arizona are the two other teams currently in first place and coming off losing records last season. Of the three teams, the Raiders probably face the toughest road to the playoffs (honestly, I can't believe I just typed that), what with their inconsistent offense and the looming specter of the Chargers and Broncos.

I'm not saying it's impossible -- the 2006 Saints taught us all a lesson -- but it'll certainly be an uphill effort. But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves: it's important to keep this in perspective ... even if for the first time in six years, the Raiders are a first-place team. Didn't see that coming.

Fuck Kansas City.
Fuck Denver.
Fuck San Diego.
Fuck our first two games.
Fuck 2-2.
Fuck the McKown/Culpepper Controversy.
Fuck Rhodes' suspension.
Fuck defensive struggles.
Fuck JaMarcus Russell's holdout.
Fuck all the doubts about our offensive line.
Fuck Randy Moss.
Fuck those pre-season power rankings.

It's on now.... and, yeah... I'm in!

A Pats fan from KFFL was trying to get me to say that I think the Raiders are going to make a run for the Championship...

I was going to respond, "make a run for a Championship?, we're in first place in the AFC West", but I didn't take the bait. I'm not worried about anything. The focus shouldn't be on January yet. The focus should be on week 6 and after that, week 7 and so on.

I swear, Pats fans win 4 in a row and their heads swell up and they really, really, really believe that their beloved team is invincible. They just assume they're a lock for a Superbowl. I always find myself waiting for the day they lose. It will come.

I hate the talk about how the Pats are going to go undefeated. I mean, so they won 4 straight. As if that's never been done before in the past. Seeing the Cheeseheads come down to earth tonight was very sobering. Last week Brett Favre was on top of the world. This week after he threw that pick in the final seconds he's ordinary again and it was ironic that on that particular pass he tied George Blanda for most interceptions ever thrown in NFL history.

The Chargers needed to come back down to earth and they did with that 1-3 start. Today their heads swelled again and their fans heads are all in the clouds. So, next week takes on a greater challenge because Denver screwed up at home by giving up two TD's in like 8 seconds on horrible t/o's and puts themselves in a hole VS a division opponent and then a team that was a superbowl contender coming into the 2007 season that starts off at a measily 1-3 is all of a sudden not suspect anymore? I think San Diego has weaknesses. LT can be stopped. Gates can be stopped. Rivers can shaken. Look at what Chicago did to them in the first half week 1.

This is not a team that believes in themselves. Yes, their heads may be in the clouds now, but come next Sunday the Silver & Black will have something to show the NFL about our team and our confidence, and our big win against Miami, and our line, and our running game, and our young defense, and our new coaching staff, and our spot at the TOP of the AFC west. Having a lot on the line should bring out the best in the Raiders.

I'm in.

I am firmly convinced that Dallas is the cream de la cream of the NFL this year after Monday nights game with Buffalo. The PatriNOTS will get beat next week!!!

Its the Colts, until somebody proves they can hang with the champs.

Im a firm believer in the ''You're the champ until someone takes it from you'' camp.

I'd also give the slight edge to Indy at this time. I'm a boxing fan, so that motto is tried & true for me. Besides, the Colts are also undefeated and they have put away some pretty solid teams IMO.

Moreover, the Colts are showing zero signs of being "satisfied" either. They look hungry to win another one and that defense is FAST.

The *pats do look damn good though......

I think Dallas would get beat, rather easily, by either of these AFC teams in a SB matchup.
