The UFL Thread (USFL-XFL Merger)

who didn't make the cut from each league for the merger? And having two divisions when the league is 8 teams is stupid.

USFL: Pittsburgh Maulers, Philadelphia Stars, New Orleans Breakers, New Jersey Generals

XFL: Houston Roughnecks, Seattle Sea Dragons, Las Vegas Vipers, Orlando Guardians

Yes, the Roughnecks are listed under the USFL. The USFL Houston Gamblers made the cut but they will use the Roughnecks moniker (since the Roughnecks actually played in Houston). But the staff and players will be Gamblers.

It works well for 10 games. 2x against divisional foes and four games against the other division.

surprised at the teams that got dropped? Thought the NE ones did okay financially?

Why stupid? Trying to create an NFL v. AFL like rivalry. But starting small to help ensure success and create ROI with future buy-ins/expansion.

Surprised Pittsburg did not make the cut.

Not really.

Every team that survived, except Houston, has a great stadium deal.

Every USFL team, except Houston, played in their home markets and rumor has it Houston will play at Rice's stadium.

Arlington won the league and served as the XFL's home base. San Antonio loves football. St. Louis had attendance over 30,000. DC built up a great culture (beer snake, lemons) and had a 9-1 team.

If the league had 10 teams, I think Orlando would have survived. They had a good stadium deal. Seattle had good support too. I believe if the league survives, those two markets along with New Orleans will return.

The NE teams never played in home markets. The Stars were based in Detroit with the Panthers. New Jersey played in Canton along with Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh only has horrible stadium options. It is either Heinz Field or the soccer stadium with 7,000 seats. The other local colleges (Robert Morris and Duquesne) play in 3,000 seat stadiums. Philly has stadium options but I assume they struck out. The NE is not kind to anything below top-tier professional.

The Vipers, because of Mark's unwillingness to share stadiums, had to play at a minor league baseball stadium. It was an embarrassing setup. Orlando was a mess on the field. Seattle was a good team with decent support but the West Coast is expensive operating. I understand why fans like Sleet and Chris are upset but football is a pricey sport and the West Coast doesn't make things easy for companies. The Roughnecks died franchise wise but spiritually took over the Gamblers.

I wanted 10-12 teams but I will take one league over no leagues.

Pittsburgh doesn't have great stadium options. Heinz Field is huge and likely expensive. The soccer stadium is only 7,000 without great camera angle. The local colleges, outside of Pitt who plays at Heinz, have smaller fields.

Also, as someone from the area, Pittsburgh is a front-runner town. They aren't interested in minor league football. The Pitt Panthers struggle with attendance. In fairness, the Maulers played in Canton, not within the city limits, but I don't think support would have increased unless the team was amazing.

I think it's forced and manufactured. There's no bad blood like the NFL AFL. Having divisions for such a small league to me is pointless. Divisions are for when you've got too many teams.

If those 3 come back in future expansion, who would you pick as #4?
