Report: Cowboys WR Owens reportedly fined $9,500
DALLAS - Terrell Owens reportedly is becoming a fine mess for the Dallas Cowboys.
Yet to take the field for his new team, Owens was fined $9,500 for arriving late or missing a handful of mandatory team functions, the Dallas Morning News reported Sunday.
According to the report, the talented but troublesome wide receiver was fined for missing both a team meeting and a rehabilitation session and arriving late to an offense meeting. The transgressions took place Friday.
"That's our club business. That's going to be accounted for," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told the Morning News.
Signed to a three-year, $25 million contract in the offseason, Owens has yet to play for the Cowboys due to a hamstring injury. The 10-year veteran has participated in just 12 of 31 practices this summer.
In addition, Owens has maintained a respectful but clear disagreement with Cowboys coach Bill Parcells about the extent of his injury and his preparation for the 2006 season. Both have questioned each other through the media.
This is the latest dust-up for Owens, 32, who has been a dangerous offensive weapon and a distraction in every one of his NFL stops. He was signed by the Cowboys in March, less than a week after being released by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Owens had 47 catches for 763 yards and six touchdowns in just seven games last season before the Eagles deactivated him for conduct detrimental to the team. Owens had publicly criticized numerous members of the organization, including star quarterback Donovan McNabb, and constantly griped about his contract.
In 2002 with San Francisco, Owens scored a touchdown against Dallas and sprinted to midfield and celebrated in the middle of the star at Texas Stadium, touching off a minor brawl between the teams.
After missing a deadline to apply for free agency following the 2003 season, Owens was traded from San Francisco to Baltimore, which moved him on to Philadelphia.
Owens has had many positive signature moments, especially in Super Bowl XXXIX, when he returned from a broken leg that robbed him of the final two regular season games and two playoff contests to make nine catches for 122 yards for the Eagles.
A five-time Pro Bowl selection, Owens has 716 catches for 10,535 yards in 142 career games.
Without Owens, the Cowboys have won their first three preseason games and play their finale Thursday night vs. Minnesota. Their season opener is at Jacksonville on September 10.
