I mean what does infrastructure to succeed even mean? To me it's- solid coaching staff, OL, some weapons. These are not things that can't be overcome. One thing I do agree with though, pairing a rookie QB with AP and Getsy would be dumb and might ruin the kid. We are going to have to make a good hire at HC/OC.
Building a culture is a little more than creating infrastructure. Here are 3 things just off the top of my head....
- It incorporates a belief system. A belief that the owner and front office are going to build the best roster year after year.... a belief that the coaching staff will put together the best game plan week in and week out.... a belief that your teammates will bring their A game every Sunday.... etc, etc, etc. Right now, we're the exact opposite of this and have been for decades.
- A culture incorporates a real identity. The Raiders at their peak had that, and everybody inside the building and outside the building knew it. We were a renegade culture that played a very distinctive style of football.... big, fast, physical, and obviously the deep ball. Compare that to us now... what is our identity? What kind of football players are we really looking for? We really seem like a bunch of random guys just collecting pay checks.
- Culture has to be built top-down. The owner has to set the personality and have the vision of what he wants his team to be. The Lakers under Jerry Buss had that. He knew the style of basketball he wanted to play, how he would build the team, how he would get the city to become a basketball city, etc, etc, etc. He singlehandedly set the tone for everything... and won for 30 years doing it the same way even with different coaches and players. Once he passed, his kids had no clue what to do, or how to do it.... and the Lakers are a shell of what they used to be.... Mark Davis has destroyed the Raiders in identical fashion..... top-down.
