Teen Parent Pleads Guilty to Child Abuse Charges
AP
BALTIMORE (Feb. 14) - A teenager who lived with her twin babies and their father in an abandoned house with no electricity or plumbing has pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse resulting in death and agreed to testify against the children's father.
Sierra Swann, who was 17 when she gave birth to the girls, will be sentenced to no more than 20 years if she testifies as prosecutors expect at Nathaniel Broadway's trial. She entered the plea Monday.
Broadway, 26, faces two counts of first-degree murder. He rejected two plea deals Monday and his trial is scheduled to begin in May.
The 1-month-old twins were found dead in May 2004. An autopsy report showed that they had fractured skulls and fractured ribs and showed signs of severe malnutrition.
Prosecutor Julie Drake said Swann told investigators that Broadway frequently beat her and told her not to feed the twins, calling the babies "spoiled and greedy."
Broadway's attorney, Jeffrey G. Kinstler, called the allegations "a completely different version than what she has ever told anybody."
Kinstler said Broadway "has always maintained that he would never hurt his children."
The twins' deaths came five months after the couple's 2-year-old daughter had been placed in foster care for abuse and neglect, officials said.
