I realize I should have shared a few elementary aspects to this judging by some questions/comments

the strength of schedule calculations are NOT based on 2025 W-L records

2025 final W-L is irrelevant to 2026 schedule calculations

these are based ONLY on 2026 projections from current betting markets updated as of this weekend (5/3/26)

Strength of schedule (SOS) involves luck (e.g., health, timing). It is also subject to influence.

Who you play is pre-determined. In this regard, SOS largely turns on:
  1. Strength of divisional opponents (6 games)
  2. Strength of in-conference divisional match up (4 games)
  3. Strength of out-of-conference divisional matchup (4 games)
A variable that’s supposed to benefit weaker teams is the 3 games that are based on where a team finished in terms of division rank the year before.

What cannot be controlled is the offseason improvement of teams. Last place teams normally have the draft capital to improve the most. Jets, Browns and Raiders all have been viewed as having great drafts, for example. Vegas takes that into consideration.

Timing of when you play teams, particularly division rivals, also affects SOS. The huge disparity in rest days did its part in helping the Raiders land 1.1 and Mendoza.
