Team Draft Needs: Kansas City Chiefs
By Frank Hastings
2006-04-11

Up next in the team needs features for the draft section are the Kansas City Chiefs. THN will be filling in all of the needs’ pages throughout April, so keep checking back for your favorite (or least-favorite) team.

Kansas City Chiefs

2005 Results: 10-6 (2nd in AFC West)
2006 Projected Cap Status: $7.3 million under (as of 03/10/06)

2005 Season Recap: It wasn’t a terrible year record wise. It was, however, another year without a playoff birth. The much-criticized defense started strong but faded toward the later half of the season. The always-prolific offense on the other hand started slow, yet finished among the league leaders as usual.

Team Needs:
1) WR – How good offensively, could this team have been over the past several years with Al Saunders, Trent Green, Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson? Kennison is decent but getting old.
2) DL – Vermeil era high draft choices, DTs Ryan Sims and Junior Siavii have yet to prove they are worthy of their high selections.
3) CB – Until this week’s 1-year signing of former Bronco Lenny Walls, the Chiefs had no proven starter to play opposite Patrick Surtain. It is expected that Walls will compete and hopefully win the starting job, but a nickel back and depth are needed.
4) QB – Trent Green is 36. It has been widely reported that the Chiefs, and in particular their GM Carl Peterson, are interested in Joey Harrington. Money will likely prohibit the deal from getting done.
5) OL – Willie Roaf and Will Shields are getting old and will retire soon.
6) OLB – Kendrell Bell didn’t have the impact everyone expected him to have. Look for the Chiefs to draft a LB in the 2nd-3rd round to get some playing time opposite Derrick Johnson, who proved last season he’s a keeper.

2006 Draft Picks: 1st Round #20 / 2nd Round #54 / 3rd Round #85 / 5th Round #154 / 6th Round #186 / 6th Round #190 / 7th Round #228

Free Agency Status:
UFA - TE/LS Ed Perry; CB DeWayne Washington
RFA - OT Jordan Black; DE Jimmy Wilkerson
Exclusive Rights FA - CB Julian Battle; CB Benny Sapp; PK Lawrence Tynes
Re-signed - DT Lional Dalton; LS Kendall Gammon; DE Carlos Hall; QB Damon Huard
Acquired – DT Ron Edwards (Buffalo); RB Quentin Griffin (Denver)
Lost – WR Marc Boerigter; WR Chris Horn; LB Shawn Barber; QB Todd Collins; CB Dexter McCleon; FB Tony Richardson; LB Gary Stills; CB Eric Warfield

Shouldn't that be without???

2) DL – Vermeil era high draft choices, DTs Ryan Sims and Junior Siavii have yet to prove they are worthy of their high selections.

You can say that again!!

3) CB – Until this week’s 1-year signing of former Bronco Lenny Walls, the Chiefs had no proven starter to play opposite Patrick Surtain. It is expected that Walls will compete and hopefully win the starting job, but a nickel back and depth are needed.

I'll give Walls the benefit of the doubt .......until he gets burned by an AFC West Rival!!

4) QB – Trent Green is 36. It has been widely reported that the Chiefs, and in particular their GM Carl Peterson, are interested in Joey Harrington. Money will likely prohibit the deal from getting done.

Hopefully Printers or Kilian will step up and be Trent's backup....and future replacement.....to Hell with Huard!! And Joey too....he's definitely not worth what he thinks he is.

5) OL – Willie Roaf and Will Shields are getting old and will retire soon.

I was really surprised Shields even decided to play this season at all.....but I won't be surprised to see both of these guys call it quits after this season. The Chiefs problem is......they put off getting replacements till it's too late!!

6) OLB – Kendrell Bell didn’t have the impact everyone expected him to have. Look for the Chiefs to draft a LB in the 2nd-3rd round to get some playing time opposite Derrick Johnson, who proved last season he’s a keeper.

Bell totally sucked and I can't even believe they didn't cut him!!

Team Needs:
1) WR – Jeff Webb? Anyone know anything about this guy? I say we still need to add a WR.
2) DL – Tamba Hali--I like this pick.....I think he'll be helpful right away :p
3) CB – Ty Law....'nuff said :)
4) QB – Ok....so we drafted yet another rookie QB....why not just put Kilian out there behind Trent and let him learn>?
5) OL – Tre Stallings.....is this guy any good?
6) OLB – Well....we almost drafted every real need ;)
