Tampa Bay talking trade for Johnson?

By John Murphy and Jason Cole

April 16, 2007 There is increasing speculation among personnel men that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to make a run at trading up from No. 4 overall to the top pick in the NFL draft in an effort to get Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson.
"I definitely get the feeling that's where the Bucs are going," an executive from another NFL team said this week.

Three weeks ago, Tampa Bay general manager Bruce Allen said he had been in contact with Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis.

"Al talked to me about what he wants to do, but I'm not sharing that with you," Allen said with a smile. There was speculation that the Bucs had already offered Oakland all four of their picks in the first three rounds (Nos. 4, 35, 64 and 68 overall) to move up. The Bucs received the No. 64 overall pick after trading defensive tackle Anthony McFarland to the Indianapolis Colts last season.

However, that trade offer involving Tampa Bay and Oakland seems premature to observers.

"I don't think you play your hand that much right now. That's the type of thing that you wait until the week before the draft to start doing," an NFL source said.
Tampa Bay met with Johnson in Atlanta on Friday and agent Bus Cook said the meeting went very well.

"Calvin was impressed with them and he got the feeling they were very interested in him," Cook said.

The Bucs also met with quarterbacks JaMarcus Russell of LSU and Brady Quinn of Notre Dame, which many outsiders believe is simply a diversion to conceal their strong interest in Johnson. Bucs coach Jon Gruden has been effusive in his praise of both Russell and Quinn.

"Gruden isn't taking a quarterback," the general manager of another NFL team said. "He doesn't like young quarterbacks. He already tried that route with [Chris] Simms and he couldn't stand it. And he has to win now."

There is a strong belief around the NFL that Gruden, who has gone to the playoffs once in the four seasons since leading the Buccaneers to the Super Bowl title, is under pressure to win this season. Given that, the 6-foot-5, 239-pound Johnson is considered the most NFL-ready player at this point.

Johnson ran a stunning 4.37 at the NFL scouting combine in February, was a unanimous All-American selection and was the ACC Player of the Year last season.

OK Let's do It,,,,,,lets just do something so I don't have to think about who we are taking #1overall.....

Nice find. Do it. At #4 Take Quinn or Peterson whoever falls and build through the draft. With 14 picks we can move through the rounds, taking who we want. There's never a better year for this as our coaches are college coaches who know these guys and can coach them up.

Imagine this Li'l Al conundrum

Round 1 (#4 overall ):
Round 2 (#33 overall):
Round 2 (#35 overall):
Round 3 (#64 overall):
Round 3 (#65 overall):
Round 3 (#68 overall):
Round 3 (#99 overall):
Round 4 (#100 overall):
Round 5 (#138 overall):
Round 5 (#165 overall):
Round 6 (#175 overall):
Round 7 (#211 overall):

Maybe another first day pick for Moss...
and we can sign almost everybody else for the money we don't spend by dropping from #1 to #4.

Get er' done.

Although I fully assume the first three picks would be CJ-Russell-Quinn and we'd be picking from Joe Thomas, AP, Gaines Adams and **Gulp** Laron Landry (Its Al Davis, guys)

We could easily trade back into mid round one and still have 2-3 more first day picks.

How about #4 and Moss to Detroit for BMW, McCown and #2...
According to the draft value chart we'd be getting 2870 points for 3000 value. Maybe they throw in Plummer too...

Maybe trade with Zona since they want Thomas and might be afraid that we'd take Thomas at #4 ... drop down to #5 and take Peterson :D

Damn. I'll be pissed if thats whats being offered and we turn it down to select a QB that gets redshirted the entire season.

You done did it now, hb...

Everybody and their mother is going to say "we could've had 4 extra picks!!!!!!" if the Raiders stay at #1 for a deal that is only being "reported". You've successfully chummed the waters, now the sharks are bound to circle.

Not so much...

Everyone knows what it costs to move up. All #1's can bring 4 extra picks, like TB is allegedly offering and sometimes more.

If it does go down, I bet it's a draft then switch routine on draft day ala Manning/Rivers.

Read the whole article. This is published two weeks before the draft, and it says that Bruce Allen said 3 weeks ago, he spoke to Al Davis.

I don't believe that any trade talk 5 weeks before the draft got any further than pleasant phone calls.

I'll tell you one thing. If we trade down to #4 for that many picks, I'd be looking to move back up, and get JaMarcus.

If - and that's a big IF - that rumor has legs, I'd be all over that trade. While I'm on the JaMarcus bandwagon, that's a hell of a lot of picks.

Man talk about throwing a monkey wrench into the Lil Al. That's a shitload of picks and that's before we get anything for Moss. I suspect any dealings with TB will probably involve Plummer which is fine by me just as long as we draft a QB. Stockpiling these picks would also give us some leverage if there's a player we covet in the draft. I just can't see Al sitting still with 4 picks in the 3rd.

I don't think my heart can take much more of this.

Had to do it bro... besides no matter what happens, there's going to be a group unhappy with it... May as well try to make myself happy... :D

I'd do it, though I'd push for Tampa's 2008 #1 and this years 2nd instead of the four picks this year... The worst that happens is we end up with either Quinn or Adrian Peterson at 4, and the idea of Quinn is really growing on me... The extra picks from Tampa gives Al the ability to move up in subsequent rounds, which I think he probably will look to do even as things stand... Myself, I'd be trying to trade a few of those 2nd and 3rds for picks in next years draft, which looks stronger IMO...

I doubt Al passes on using the #1 overall on someone, but this could possibly be manuevered in a way that we get a player at 4 and add 1st day picks to next years draft, especially if Moss is also moved... It worked for the Pats anyways...

Only 11 days and a wakeup to go....

Problem: Davis either wants one of the QB's or Johnson.

At #4 he might get none of the above. First, no way Russell is getting by the Browns. No telling what Detroit might do. Somehow I don't see them taking a tackle at #2 -- 'ya know the "safe" pick. ;)

Now I just need an internet link... :)

As Stepper might have said in the past...this is an INTERNET RUMOR.

That is all.

I see no way Cleveland will pass on JaRuss either. I have no idea which way Detroit is leaning. I've heard all kinds of scenarios including trading down in which case we could conceivably trade back up again to their #2. Not sure what our net gain would be after all the jockeying back and forth. Probably not a likely scenario anyway.

If we walk away with Plummer and Quinn at #4 and the likelihood of moving up for another #1 to be used on a skill position, I wouldn't be too upset.

You know I was just thinking. Leave it to Al Davis to f/ck up the Lil Al contest for us.

First we suffer through three years of pure hell on the field but that isn't enough for the Dark Lord. Oh no...he has to come up with some trade that would add about four more picks into our contest. Jesus H. Christ. I'm just pissed.

Anyway. It's not going to happen.

Say hello to the newest Raider: Calvin Johnson.

detroit wants CJ, odds are that joe thomas is who they get if CJ is on the board. Russell falls to 3 in this trade and i figure the browns take him on endorsement from the guy who actually worked with T. Brady, Tom Martinez rather that charlie weiss whose is an OC but not a qb coach.

i doubt this trade happens, but outside of being stuck with Softy Quinn, i'm not mad about all the picks. though the prospect of paying all those first day pick salaries isnt the greatest.
