I have some thoughts, but also some questions for my fellow Raider fans.
Quarterbacks--McCown/Russell/Walter. Well, has any position improved more in a day? Jeff Otis, we hardly knew ye.....Mr. Booty, I will always remember you fondly, because you always reminded me of Al Bundy in the Ford Fairlane movie (Booty Town, Booty Town, 'cross the USA...). I think our opinions on this bunch will vary wildly during the summer and the season. I do think that Al gave a 4th round pick to DET for a reason, and it wasn't Mike Williams. McCown gets a 1 year audition for the rest of the NFL. Could he stick after 07 as a backup? Sure, but that's not the plan. I think, barring an exceptional summer from Walter, or unless Russell proves more ready than we thought, this is your week 1 starter. You can knock 15 sacks of that total of 72 last year, this guys legs will avoid at least that many.
Running Back--I really don't think Bush is a statement about Jordan. I think Kiffin remembers LenDale Weight, Al remembers Okoye and Word, and this was a value pick, plus I am sure Al loved making a splash on Day 2. I admit, I am not as excited about this pick as others. I am cautiosly optimistic. We'll see. Those big backs tend to get slower in the pros. Or everyone gets faster, one of the two. I feel a little Nick Bell vibe off this guy. Hope I am wrong. Dominic Rhodes was one of the savviest offseason moves this team could have made. He is going to fit the disciplined, one-cut system, and beat out Lamont by week 3. I hope Fargas sticks. I am guessing unless we need the money, Orenthal gets cut, and practice squaded til next year. One more year for Zack! Man, Rhodes, Griffith, Bush. Huge, huge upgrade.
Wide Receiver--I am less concerned with who actually makes the team, and how many roster spots these people take up. WRs, WR/TE hybrids, blah blah blah. If we are cutting a Chris Morris or a Chad Slaughter because some 6'3", 228 pound guy without a position makes the team, I am pissed. Porter is a mystery to me. I thought that he showed surprising restraint during the season last year. Never said a word. Could go either way with this guy. I would not be surprised to see him try and assume a leadership role, with Randy gone, and all the new faces. I like that BMW comes in with no expectations. He's a lottery ticket, IMO. Short money, maybe he becomes a possesion guy. Why not, another Raider reclamation project. I hope Morant makes this team.
Tight Ends--Looks like it's going to be Miller, Stewart, and......Madsen. Once I read that the Raiders save 1 mill on the cap if Courtney was cut or traded, I scratched him off the depth chart. I love him as a 3rd TE but $1 million? Buh-Bye. I gotta be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing Wakefield as our 3rd TE here. I think he's my selection for the Adopt-a-Scrub offseason program. Guy plays OT, TE, and DE, we gotta find a home for him, right? Again, major improvements here. Stewart is going to be a nice addition, and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets more PT than Miller early on.
Offensive Line--So we'll find out if Art, Slater and Eatman took chicken salad and made chickenshit. New line coach, which I think will affect the running game more than passs pro. New OC, which will hopefully affect the pass pro. No more 7 step drops, till we prove we can stop he defense from pinning their ears back. It became a vicious cycle last year. The DL smelled blood, so just picked a spot 12 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and ran there. Bang, there was Andrew, finishing his drop. No idea how it shakes out, because there are just too many possibilities. I am really rooting for gallery, but I'm beginning to get that not-so-fresh feeling.
When do you think Russell starts? When would you prefer he starts?
Which running backs, including FBs, do you see making the team?
Give us your WR depth chart:
Predict how many catches Zach Miller gets:
How many linemen do we keep, and who will they be?
Name the Opening Day starting lineup:
Defense to follow.....
