Yes, it's the fans' fault.

Amandla Stenberg says ‘THE ACOLYTE’ getting canceled is “not a huge shock” due to the extreme vitriol from Star Wars fans.

“There has been a rampage of vitriol that we have faced since the show was even announced… a rampage of, I would say, hyper-conservative bigotry and vitriol, prejudice, hatred and hateful language towards us.”

She adds, “it has been an incredible honor and dream for me to be in this universe” and the audiences who did watch the show “were deeply loved and appreciated, and it made this job all the worthwhile for me.”

Her statement is why nothing will change long-term. They are insular in their castle-like thinking. When in doubt, blame the fans! They didn't understand and respect your "vision." It wasn't because you made a stupid show.

Star Wars fans, much like Raider fans, are the worst.

Neither has had the opportunity to enjoy a respectable product since the '80s. The similarities run deep, it seems.

Jokes aside I’m still pretty surprised they canceled rather than trying to revamp it on a more realistic budget for another season.

Anyway, looking forward to picking up the new Star Wars Outlaws game.

Any idea what the budgets were for the other series? Any of them comparable to what The Acolyte cost to make, or does it stand out in terms of expense?

Upper middle of the pack I think but you wouldn’t really know it from watching. Roughly the same budget as HoTD iirc. These bloated budgets are clearly becoming a problem though and I think they could have put something passable together for much less. Especially considering they’re still going to have to find a way to tie up loose ends. Seems cheaper to just revamp in the long run IMO.

Looks like Andor cost significantly more to make. I figured that would be the case.

I didn't realize Secret Wars was such a hysterically expensive flop. Yikes. Not SW, but still Disney.

Just glancing over the reported budgets of Disney+'s recent series kinda gives me an idea of why they may be quick to pull the plug on underperforming shows. They've thrown a fuckton of money at these projects that just don't do enough to justify further investment.

Andor is getting a second season, which I'm happy about. But I don't remember it having high viewership either.

2.5 mill more per episode, according to the Google box. Less than 1 mill more per episode than Andor.

Looks like Mando cost a lot less and gained a lot more traction. Any significant difference in quality between the two?

Not in the sense of looking at the quality of production and thinking one looks like it should have cost more than the other. None of the D plus shows have had high production quality IMO, with the Acolyte it's more about spending that type of money and making some pretty basic mistakes. Completely ignoring the story telling, which I think is a complicated subject, the timeline of episodes hurt the cohesiveness of the story. Some tweaks there would have helped immensely IMO. There were just some amateur mistakes that you wouldn't expect for a show with that much invested.

The story itself was a risk both in the sense of introducing an entirely new era and characters to film and also the handling of legacy characters and storylines. If you're going to do that, it better be bullet proof. Even more so if you're going to lean into some of the more polarizing aspects like the DEI perception, etc., which just adds fuel to the fire of what the priorities actually were. It was a lesson in business I think. Reminds me of the old MJ quote when asked why he didn't get involved in politics... Republicans buy shoes too.

To the original point, I think there was enough there that the show could have been salvaged with a little more oversight and eye on the balance sheet but no dice apparently. I assume that it will be wrapped up in a follow up book or comics of some sort, similar to the end of Solo was. There was a solid response to the villain though, so maybe we'll see him again in some capacity.

Anything like that been produced to explain why taking a lightsaber through the torso isn't fatal anymore? Or at least how it always manages to miss the spine and vital organs, resulting in no permanent damage?

I don't know if that happened in The Acolyte, but it has happened more than once in the D+ shows. Annoying.

Not that I've seen... that ship probably sailed when they brought Maul back though. Now that I think about it, they can probably bring him back again since his second death was a mere slash across the chest.

Rather clairvoyant of him to request technology to reproduce his likeness that didn’t even exist at the time of his death not be used.
