Panthers agree to terms with QB David Carr

Carr, 27, made the decision after returning from a two-day visit with the Seattle Seahawks and meeting with his wife at their California home late Thursday night. Carr had visited with the Panthers Monday and Tuesday. The financial terms of the deal weren’t immediately available.

The Panthers obviously don’t view Carr as the typical backup. Coach John Fox has said several times that Jake Delhomme, who struggled at times last season, remains the starter. But Carr, who has made 75 career starts, could provide a viable alternative if Delhomme struggles again.

That’s something the Panthers lacked last season when Delhomme was forced to miss three games with a thumb injury. Backup Chris Weinke was elevated to the starting lineup, but the Panthers lost his first two starts and let him attempt only seven passes in his final start. Weinke was released after the season.

The Panthers also had Joey Harrington, the third pick of the 2002 draft in for a visit, but Carr clearly was their top target. Sources have said the Panthers view Carr as a player who still has plenty of upside and could flourish with the right team and the right offensive system.

Although there was talk Carr could land with teams such as Oakland, Detroit or Cleveland where he might have a better initial shot at a starting job, the quarterback wanted to land in a situation that presented the best chance of resurrecting his career.

Carr came out of Fresno State viewed as a franchise quarterback. The expansion Houston Texans used their first pick on him (one pick before the Panthers selected defensive end Julius Peppers).

But Carr’s career never took off in Houston. Surrounded by poor offensive lines, he was under constant pressure from defenses. Coach Gary Kubiak stayed with Carr last season after replacing Dom Capers. But the Texans decided to part ways with Carr after making a trade with Atlanta for Matt Schaub and handing him the starting job. Carr was released last month.

Carr did show some progress under Kubiak, completing a career-best 68.3 of his passes and posting an 82.1 quarterback rating. For his career, Carr has completed 60 percent of his passes with a 75.5 quarterback rating. While completing 1,243 of 2,070 passes, Carr has thrown for 59 touchdowns with 65 interceptions.

The Panthers will go to training camp with second-year pro Brett Basanez as the third quarterback behind Delhomme and Carr.

Its a sad commentary on our situation when a Fresno alum doesnt even come in for a visit...

I'd say the Russell wagon is gathering steam by the minute though.

Yeah its even sadder when we are sad about a guy like Carr not being our QB, haha. Lets just draft J-Rock and be done with this BS for the next 5-10.

Im with ya brother.

I just had a 20 post 'debate' with someone at another forum, who said he'd rather roll with Rattay as the starter next year and reassess the QB position after that...

It made my blood boil.

Enough reassessment. Time to pull the trigger and find us a Franchise QB.

Fuck you David Carr.

David Carr is Jim Plunkett, circa 1977. He's a former #1, that got the white kicked out of him for 5 years.

He jumps 3 feet in the air when a door slams, and pees his pants when a dog barks. He needs to drop back about 80 times without getting touched, after sitting about two months on the sidelines.

This wasn't the team for him. When Plunk came here, the coaches kept telling him, "Don't worry, no one's gonna touch ya...."

We can't say that.

Likely he wasn't interested because he wasn't invited to Oakland to work out. His agent would have leaked it if he had been to drive up his value. Plunk similarities aside, it would have been a nasty fit.

Here are the things im tired of waiting for...

1. A leader and franchise QB for this team. Someone who is ours and has never played for another NFL team! I dont want someone else's discarded #1 when we have a chance to get our own.

2. Gallery and Grove to shit or get off the pot. Im sick of waiting for these two to get their shit together. THis is officially the last shot to earn your check fellas.

3. Moss and Porter. I am tired of this Moss bullshit and cant wait until he is off the team. I dont believe him and Porter will be good teammates all of the sudden. Whne you quit on a team you should never be allowed back.

4. A franchise RB. We need a guy like LJ, LT etc. Im tired of having a bum QB and RB. Those are the two positions its fun to watch for me on O.

5. To get back to .500. Whew... it hurts to type that one but .500 never seemed so far away as it has the lately. Thats the first step to getting guys in here and getting the media off our balls.

6. Im sick and tired of the media sayiong we are a horrible franchise. We have so much history and success that its a fucking joke., How many teams in major sports have never won anything... a shitload. How many teams in the NFL have never won a trophy...shitload. We were the last AFC west team in the fucking superbowl there is no logic to say we are the worst franchise in sports/NFL, its pure Al Davis hate. The man deserves so much more respect its sad.

Rant over... I feel better now.

Andrew Walter prolly jumps after closing his car door too. No pun intended unless its some how has a double meaning im not grasping

It's a good landing spot for him... No pressure, he can lick his wounds and work on his mechanics... nice place to live... I don't know if coming home and trying to revive a team would have been in his best interest...

I hope he does well... He's a great, refreshing kid with good values, especially in this TO/Pacman Jones era...

Bringing in Rattay would make way too much sense for this organization. Why bring in a starter when you can draft a backup and go into next season with 5 backups and no starter.

I don't still don't see how bringing in Rattay, Carr, Green or any other vet as a starter has any impact on your guy. If anything they help you out by giving your guy the time he needs to develop (using that word very liberally here :D) You should be more worried about how much confidence this organization has in Walter.

If Al continues to pass up on QB's in the draft then we'll have to live by his actions. Frankly, I wonder if it's a money issue. I mean we've had a pretty stellar track record of signing our draft picks but we also haven't had to pay out #1 signing money to a QB. Signing a Jamarcus Russell will really give the franchise a shot in the ass and for nothing else, give us some hope and put some bodies in the HOT.

I'm also tired of signing other team's cast offs, while it worked with Plunk and Gannon, it's pretty much failed miserably with the rest.

Rattay isnt a starter.

He's been punted out of Tampa, and San Fran after mediocre seasons and the guy is on the wrong side of 30.

I could handle him coming in if it meant Walter and Rattay battle for the job while JaMarcus learns for a year...(Probably more like 8 games)

Id ship a 5th rounder off to Detroit for McCown...The guy only makes 2 mil, and is more than likely an upgrade over anyone on our roster at the moment.

I thought #1 money was #1 money - regardless of position? Or at least relatively speaking????

I'd take McCown over Rattay as well. He's bigger, stronger, faster & younger. Oh, and has more upside.

As Ricky Bobby says, "with all due respect" the notion that Rattay is a viable starting option for Oakland is beyond laughable. Not saying that McCown is neccesarily the "answer" but if given the choice, McCown is clearly a better bet IMO.

It is.

Anyone that thinks CJ is going to cost us less because he is a WR is deluding himself. We take him first and he automatically becomes the highest paid WR in the league.

Exactly.

The #1 pick in the draft this year will most likely get a 60 million contract with 30 million gauranteed.

Russell, Quinn or CJ. Even Thomas.

All the more reason to trade down then if we don't intend on taking a QB
