Some thoughts on the game...

15:00 KO Jano kicks off 8 yards deep into endzone

14:18 ...

1-10 20 Alex Smith sideline pass to the left...fumble...Aso pushed ball carrier out of bounds
2-22 8 Run up the middle...tackle by Huff
3-18 12 Run over LG...tackle by Howard
4-7 23 Punt to our 27 yard line...caught by Carr

The pass was a lateral. Brayton, Howard and Asomugha knew right away that once the receiver missed the ball that it was a fumble. They came after it like three hungry dogs after a bone. Asomugha made the tackle. They were not only swarming to the ball, being agressive but displayed their smarts in recognizing the opportunity...especially impressive for Howard who is rookie.

Carr took a huge hit when he probably should have waved his hand in the air. To his credit, he did hold onto the ball.

12:56 ...

1-10 25 Brooks to pass...complete to Gabriel lining up on left side..caught medium left
1-10 36 Brooks to pass...complete to Anderson caught short left...Anderson lined up on left side and had a stop pattern
2-1 45 Brooks to handoff to Jordan...fumble...Brooks dives on ball to retain
3-9 37 Brooks to pass...flushed out right....runs downfield...cuts left for a big gain
1-10 38 (SF 38) Handoff to Jordan...over RG
2-5 33 Handoff to Jordan over RT
1-10 25 Brooks to pass...protection good...pass to Moss to endzone broken up by safety
2-10 25 Brooks to pass...Moss lined up on left side...came across the middle for the catch
1-10 11 Handoff to Jordan...starts up the middle...then over LG
2-7 8 TO Brooks
2-7 8 Gabriel on left...Moss on right....pass to Gabriel complete...TD...extra point good

On the first play, Gallery kept his man in front of him, Grove held his ground and Hulsey blocked his man before helping out Grove. Zack was in to block but the protection was good...goes out three yards past LOS for a pass if Brooks needed to go that option.

On the second play, the protection was good again...Grove buried his man. Crockett was in the backfield with Jordan but goes out for a pass.

On the fumble, Crockett and Jordan were in the "I" formation. Crockett was to lead block up the middle. Jordan didn't really make an attempt to take the handoff, he thought it was a fake..thus causing the fumble. Brooks dove on the ball.

On the long run by Brooks...it was a blitz by the defense. Moss, Whitted and Anderson lined up on the right in a bunch..Gabriel was on the left side. We are using this type of formation fairly often and with different receivers.

Langston Walker did a good job on one play of shoving the pile left to open a hole for Jordan.

On another play, Hulsey pulls out of his LG spot to the RG for a nice block. Crockett sealed his man outside. That was a gain of 8 yards.

On the pass broken up by the safety intended for Moss...Gallery picked up the blitz..Crockett stayed in to block..Jordan runs along LOS towards left sideline for a swing pass...Moss is on the right...Gabriel sets up on the left. Later in the game, Jordan stays in to block and Crockett goes out for a pass. We seem to use that switching often.

On another play, Crockett had a great cut block to floor the oncoming blitzer.

Jordan did make a nice shuffle with his feet when with the ball to elude a MLB blitz.

On the play that Gabriel scores the touchdown...he starts in motion towards the quarterback but stops before reaching the LT. He then runs a straight diagonal to the middle of the field, one yard into the endzone and waves his hands.

7:15 KO Jano kicks off 5 yards deep into endzone

Janikowski is really showing great leg strength this year to go along with his accuracy. All his kickoffs are well into the endzone except for one that was intentionally kicked to bounce with little time remaining in the half.

7:15 ...

1-10 20 Gore over RT...Schweigert with tackle
1-10 30 Pass short right to FB...Sapp and Burgess with pressure
2-13 27 Short pass to right side...Huff and Gibson with tackle
3-8 32 Pass to right middle...incomplete...Fabian with 5 yard chuck
4-8 32 Punt...Gabriel catches on 17 yard line

On the play where Sapp and Burgess apply pressure, they forced the QB to backpedal a long ways. Burgess just pushed Hetherington away while keeping his eye on the quarterback.

On the Gibson tackle, we were in the big nickle and Gibson lined up wide left in a linebackers position.

The chuck by Fabian appeared that he was passing his guy off to Morrison or the safety but Morrison was the closest. Nice chuck.

5:05 ...

1-10 21 Brooks quick pass to Randal Williams....Randal in motion towards right...pass complete to short right sideline
2-1 30 Handoff to Jordan over RT
1-10 32 Short pass to right...complete to Courtney down and out pattern
1-10 43 Handoff to Jordan over RT...appeared that the DT came in past McQuistan
2-11 42 Brooks to pass...pocket closing but remains calm...runs up middle...nobody open
3-9 44 TO Brooks
3-9 44 Brooks to pass...plenty of time...pass incomplete deep left...a bit overthrown
4-9 44 Shane punts...Randal Williams unnecessary roughness..late hit (15 yards

On one play where the handoff went to Jordan, Gallery layed out and cut the legs out from under the defensive end.

On the play where the pocket was closing, Brooks was cool...nobody was open. The protection wasn't bad, but the lack of open receiver eventually forces him to run.

On the deep pass to Whitted, that was another instance where we bunched three receivers up on top with one lone receiver at the bottom. The pass was about a foot too long. On the sidelines, Brooks was patting Whitted's helmet in what appeared to be Brooks taking blame for an off target pass.

Later in the game, Brooks rubs Tui's back and helmet and seems to wish him luck as he is about to take over.

1:15 ...

1-10 38 Run up middle...Sapp stands him up and brings him down
2-6 42 Run over LG...Howard with tackle

We are doing a nice job in filling in gaps and thus being stingy allowing the running backs to run on us. You can see how attentive the linebackers and safeties are anticipating it.

15:00 ...

3-5 43 QB roll out...pass short right complete....Poole pushed him out of bounds...holding on Fabian...declined
1-10 50 Run over RG...Brayton and Howard with the tackle
2-6 46 Pass to medium left...intercepted by Huff

On one play, Burgess shot into the backfield just as the ball was being handed off.

The interception by Huff could have been a touchdown but the last guy, the quarterback, tripped him up and Huff stumbled.

13:36 ...

1-10 15 (ball of SF 15) Handoff to Jordan over RT...
1-5 5 Handoff to Jordan...starts middle then over LT
2-1 1 Handoff to Jordan up the middle
3-1 1 Pass to Courtney middle of endzone...PI on Courtney to nullify TD
3-1 11 Pass to middle of field one yard into endzone...intended for Randal Williams...tipped by safety and intercepted

On the first play, Crockett had a nice lead block. Courtney kept pushing his man downfield even when his man was trying to stand up...nice.

On the next play, Gallery seals his man outside nicely and Hulsey contains his man inside. Hulsey appears to be strong.

The PI penalty wasn't shown so I don't know.

11:37 ...

1-10 20 Run over LG...Morrison with the tackle
2-5 25 Run up the middle...Sam Williams with the tackle
1-10 32 Play action pass to deep right...complete...Fabian with coverage and tackle
1-10 49 Run up RG...Irons from LB position blitzes to make tackle for a loss
2-13 46 Pass to deep left on crossing pattern...incomplete
3-13 46 Penalty...delay of game
3-18 41 Pass to short right...Morrison with the tackle
4-9 50 Punt bounces into endzone

Irons was quick getting into the backfield..he went untouched.

8:23 ...

1-10 20 Brooks to pass...delayed blitz by LB...Brooks runs over LG
2-7 23 Handoff to Jordan up the middle
3-6 24 Pass to short right...blitz by SF...complete to Whitted
1-10 37 Jordan up the middle
2-9 38 Delayed handoff to Jordan over LT
1-10 47 Pass to deep right to Moss...incomplete...high and out of bounds
2-10 47 Swing pass to Jordan on the right...penalty on McQ unnecessary roughness
2-25 32 Handoff to Jordan over LT
3-22 35 Pass to short right to Moss...underthrown incomplete
4-22 35 Shane punts...caught on 9 yard line....Cooper with great tackle

On the delayed handoff to Jordan, Gabriel provided a nice block. Hulsey again was able to force his man inside.

On the pass to Moss, it appears that the timing of Moss with Brooks is not there yet. The anticipated cuts, knowing how far to lead Moss, it hasn't caught on yet. I remember Collins mentioning this last year that his timing with Moss was something he had to work on more.

On the tackle by Cooper, he grabbed the ball carriers hips and drove him down like he was in rodeo. We have some aggressive players on special teams and that with Shane's leg will put us in good positions.

3:26 ...

1-10 16 Deep pass toward middle...complete...Stu and Aso wert there but Aso with coverage
1-10 38 (ball on Raiders 38) Run up the middle...Kelly and Morrison with the tackle
2-8 36 Pass to deep right...incomplete
3-8 36 Pass to short middle...incomplete...almost intercepted by Morrison
4-8 36 FG attempt...no good

1:41 ...

1-10 44 Pass to short right...complete Randal Williams
2-4 50 Brooks to pass...deep middle...complete to Randal Williams
1-10 11 Brooks spikes ball
2-10 11 Brooks to pass...buys time by scrambling in pocket...throws it out of endzone
3-10 11 Pass to short middle...complete to Fargas
4-4 5 Jano kicks a FG

On the completion to Randal, Brooks placed the ball high in a position where it wouldn't be intercepted.

Brooks didn't need to spike the ball...we had over a minute left.

On the pass out of endzone...Brooks was calm as he scrambled for more time. No receivers were open. At the last second with pressure almost at him, he threw the ball away off his back foot. Nice arm strength, poise and ad libbing.

On the same play, Foschi had a chip block before going out for a pass.

:16 KO Jano kicks off..bounces to 15 yard line..ball carrier pushed out of bounds by Gibson

:08 ...

1-10 37 Pass to deep left...intercepted by Poole

15:00 KO Kickoff caught by Carr at the 4 yard line

1-10 33 Delay to Fargas over LG...Walter as QB
2-6 37 Walter swing pass to right to Fargas
3-2 41 Handoff to Fargas over RG
1-10 44
Delayed handoff to Fargas over LG
2-6 48 Walter sacked
3-16 38 Walter to pass...medium left just left of hash mark...good protection of Walter....complete to Madsen
1-10 45 (ball on SF 45) Handoff to Fargas up the middle
2-8 43 Pass to Whitted to right of right hash mark
1-10 30 Handoff to Fargas up the middle
2-8 28 Walter to pass...Foshci sneaks across the middle..Walter with time but too late in spotting Foschi
3-8 28 Pass to Whitted...short middle complete
4-1 21 Fargas up middle
1-10 20 Pass to Whitted lined up on right side and coming across middle...complete
1-goal 7 Fargas over LT
2-goal 3 Handoff to Fargas over RG...touchdown...extra point is good

It appeard that Porter mostly blocked while in.

Fargas runs hard...lowers shoulder.

On the sack of Walter..the DT pulled out the LT spot and ran through the RT spot.

Walter's protection was otherwise good. He was calm and composed like Brooks. They were more decisive today and knew where they wanted to go with the ball. Their quarterback drops were shorter...in other words..they weren't those really long drops and this helped on a few occasions with the protection.

Walter stood in pocket, looked over field ...sidestepped left and threw a great pass to Madsen that seemed to be effortless (poised).

Madsen is still thin but he will fill out...I like him.

On another pass, this time to Whitted, he was covered well but Walter placed the ball right where it needed to be placed. We were great at picking up the blitz on the play also.

Foschi did the same thing that Crockett and Jordan was doing, one goes out for a pass from the HB spot and the other stays in block...switching on occasions. On one incomplete though, Walter didn't see a wide open Foschi until it was too late. The safety spotted him first (spotted Foschi)

On two consecutive plays, Foschi provided blocks that sprung Fargas..one to seal his man outside.

5:50 KO Tim Duncan kicks off to 7 yard line...Ekejuiba with the tackle

5:45 ...

1-10 25 Pass to short left...incomplete
2-10 25 Run over LG...Hawthorne witht the tackle
3-8 27 Dilfer flushed out of pocket...runs right...Bing with solid hit on Dilfer..penalty on Dilfer unsportsmanlike conduct...taunting
4-23 12 Punt...caught by Carr at the 30 yard line

Bing hit Dilfer hard and then tried to take the ball away from him while on the ground. Dilfer started laughing all the way to the sidelines and for a long time afterwards. He didn't want to let on that the hit hurt so he started acting like a doofus which prompted the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Later in the game when the 49ers finally scored, he high-fived one of our players and started laughing again. This prompted another penalty. I felt sorry for him.

4:24 ...

1-10 41 Pass to Morant complete...short left
2-8 43 Fargas over LT
3-5 46 Walter to pass...Madden lined up close to line as TE right....deep pass to left sideline...complete to Madsen
1-10 19 Fargas up the middle
2-7 16 Walter to pass...short pass to right of right hash mark...complete to Santiago
1-Goal 7 Fargas runs wide right
2-goal 3 Fargas over RG
3-Goal 5 Walter to pass to end of endzone...incomplete..good coverage
4-Goal 5 David Kimbal 23 yard FG

On the long pass to Madsen, this is another play where Walter seemed as cool as Stabler. Fargas had a good block to eliminate the blitzer.

The pass into the endzone...Walter placed that ball high to eliminate the possibility of an interception. The receiver was well covered.

Foschi again with the nice blocks. With him, Jordan, Crockett and to a lesser degree, Fargas blocking well, we are comfortable with switching on each play who stays in to block and who remains as the checkdown.

Other thoughts...

Routt is a very sure tackler and very active.

Hawthorne is double teamed. He does a spin move on occasions and has paid off sometimes. He seems to collapse the pocket on most occasions. I have seen he and Rashad Moore switch sides at times. Hawthorne is mostly on the left side though. His motor is very good and hasn't taken any plays off. I can see how Ryans and Millards personalities and tenacity have been instilled in him..he seems agressive. Hawthorne is definitely quicker than Moore though.

Huntley is another guy who is always somewhere near the QB. Agressive with a nice motor. He dropped into coverage once.

Reshard Lee runs hard.

The TEs being used more..not only by the first string but throughout the game is nice. Provides another checkdown and uses the middle of the field along with blocking of course.

Tim Duncan was dead on with his 45 yard field goal. I don't know if we would be able to get anything for him though.

Joe Hall has an attitude. He is like a man on a mission out there. He blocks his man with ease and has had multiple blocks on the same play. He even pushes his man after the play..not taking any verbal abuse. He is obviosly big but weight is distributed well. He moves very well and at times just dominates. Love to see with the first string.

Walsh tries to build confidence in Walter at the beginning of his time and then builds from there. It is easy to see the confidence in Walter as he makes his way to the sidelines.

Our offensive line has trouble with defensive line stunts but this performance will do wonders to add confidence and validate all the hard work they have done.

Thanks for the recap.

Also from what I heard on the radio that's pretty much how it seemed (your comments at the end).
