Sims vs. Steinbach

Here's a question: If we're satisfied that Gallery isn't the LT answer and is, instead, the future at RT...

What about Joe Thomas?

Good question.

You'd think he'd be getting more love considering the amount of people that blame last years offensive problems soley on the OL.

I would be very happy with us picking up Thomas and improving the Oline if I thought he was an elite prospect. I haven't seen much of him, but I didn't see enough to convince me that he would be worth the pick. I would be more happy picking up Staley or Free later on.

Agreed. I just can't see Al drafting another OL with the #1 pick. I do hope we bring in a couple more rookie OL this draft. I'm thinking Free may be there in the 3rd hopefully.

Skill players in the 1st round !!!! Skill players. I think Al will go back to that philosophy.

I still haven't seen a break down of Sims' restructure so I have no idea right now how pissed off I should be...

Sims:
Sims signed a four-year contract that calls for a total of $5.5 million in salary and signing bonus in 2007. After this season, the Raiders can lock in an option for a fifth year. The total pact would net Sims $27million over five years. The eight-year veteran expects to challenge Robert Gallery for the starting job at left tackle, with the runner-up likely moving to right tackle.

"All Barry has ever wanted is a chance to compete for the job," said his agent, Ken Vierra.

Sims has started 103 games for the Raiders, but was moved to guard by coach Art Shell last season, then benched in favor of rookie Paul McQuistan late in the year.

and Steinbach's:

Offensive lineman Eric Steinbach, who spent his first four NFL seasons in Cincinnati, signed a seven-year, $49.5 million contract with the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, with $17 million guaranteed.

so
$27million over five years for sims = 5.4 million per year
49.5 million for ES over 7 years = 7.1 million per year + 17 million guaranteed

That puts Sims value at 75% of ES.

so, are you pissed?

Keep in mind you're also comparing an LT to an LG. Even with Sims brief appearance at LG last season his contract has always been negotiated from the standpoint of him being a tackle, not a guard.

It sucks. But in a weak free agent market like this one. It's good to hold on to players and just cut them next year so we can field a better team this season. Sims deserves more than Langston Walker IMO. I think Lamont and Simms were only kept for this next season, unless one of them proves they deserve to be here.

maybe... maybe not

Steinbach could be moved to play left tackle for the Browns, although Bechta said no determination had been made yet on that. Steinbach started 64 games for the Bengals in his four seasons, including twice at left tackle and once at center.

But I agree that Es' contract was for a LG not a LT.

Now if he was a mediocre LT he might have gotten...

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reports that the Cowboys have given offensive lineman Leonard Davis a seven-year, $49.6 million contract, with $18.75 million in guaranteed money and $24 million paid out over the first three years of the contract.

The contract bests by $100,000 the deal signed on Friday by Eric "the Skipper" Steinbach in Cleveland.

edit/disclaimer: I didn't mean this to sound as angry as it does in print. Read it with a smile. ;)

Yes I'm still disappointed. First, Steinbach's contract isn't 49.5M *plus* 17M guaranteed, it's 49M including the 17M in guaranteed cabbage. They say it that way so it sounds like more money than it really is.. ego pumping and all that bullshit. And.. we're all in the know that contracts don't get structured in a flat payout as you're showing in your estimates there, right? Steinbach's salary cap hit for this year is more likely between $3-5M and will not get obscene until year's 6 and 7 when the bulk of the contract is due (and will not be paid, forcing a restructure, trade or release). Almost all modern NFL contracts are structured this way.. a 7 year deal is really only a 5 year deal.

So, we've got Sims who can't play tackle getting paid like he can, instead of a top-level Guard who can not only play like an elite guard but might even be able to slide over and play as a starting-quality LT too?

Meh. I just hope that one of the 2-3 draftees we being in can step up and play, because it sure doesn't look like we're addressing the problem in FA this year. But hey, as long as we can do as well on offense as we've been doing on defense the past few years, that's fine with me. And, who knows, maybe one of last year's rooks will step up and play their asses off for us this year and make us all forget about how shitty things were on the O-line last year.

We can only hope.

Did anyone check out Raiders.com lately, it Shows some really interesting positions now?

I think before someone mentioned somewhere on here that Newberry was the only Center listed not anymore. Not only Newberry & Grove there at the C so is Treu, but it also lists Sims as a Tackle....

It's March 8th. That chart is extremely unimportant at present. It will start to mean something at around the half-way point through training camp.
