Shell looks to past for help
Former Raiders assistant Walsh is expected to be named the new coach's offensive coordinator again
By Steve Corkran
CONTRA COSTA TIMES
Art Shell spent most of his first two full days as Raiders coach finding replacements for the voids on the coaching staff he inherited from predecessor Norv Turner. He is expected to name former longtime Raiders assistant coach Tom Walsh offensive coordinator as soon as today.
Walsh coached with the Raiders during their entire stay in Los Angeles from 1982-94. He got fired along with Shell after the 1994 season.
The imminent move also sends a strong signal that Shell has autonomy to decide who he wants to fill the vacant positions on his staff. Walsh coached alongside Shell from 1983-89 and under Shell from the time Shell replaced Mike Shanahan as coach four games into the '89 season.
Walsh took over as Shell's offensive coordinator in 1992 after Shell demoted Terry Robiskie following an 0-4 start.
Walsh's expected arrival further solidifies the belief that Oakland's offensive line will be the focus of much attention during the offseason and training camp after a disappointing showing for much of last season.
Walsh handled several duties during his initial stint with the Raiders -- quarterbacks, receivers and offensive coordinator. He is a skilled teacher in things such as blocking protection, especially blitz pick-ups. Those are areas that hurt the Raiders last season.
The Raiders extended the contract of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan last month. Offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, special teams coach Joe Avezzano, offensive line coach Jim Colletto, defensive line coach Sam Clancy, defensive backs coach Clayton Lopez and special teams assistant Martin Bayless were let go. Colletto, Bayless and Raye landed jobs elsewhere.
Quarterbacks coach John Shoop was viewed as a logical successor to Raye, based on his three years as offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears from 2001-03 and his having been with the Raiders last season.
However, Shell called upon an old friend and someone he knows what to expect from. For now, Shoop remains in his old position. He has drawn interest from the Buffalo Bills about their offensive coordinator vacancy.
Former St. Louis Rams offensive lineman Jackie Slater is the leading candidate to replace Colletto, with former Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Irv Eatman joining him as an assistant.
Walsh also coached at U.S. International University in San Diego and Idaho State (head coach, 1997-98). He was offensive coordinator at Murray State in 1980 and the University of Cincinnati in 1981.
