I thought he was one of Al's guys. If the young pup Kiff brought in (The other Mark Jackson) is taking over, then this is a sincere changing of the guard.

Raiders | Jones fired
Fri, 16 Feb 2007 08:00:37 -0800

Bob McGinn, of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, reports the Oakland Raiders have fired pro scout and contract negotiator Sean X. Jones, according to an unidentified AFC West official.

At least they waited until Terd and Thomas were re-signed. What does this mean for Scrabble this year? Lombardi?

FWIW - He's still on the team website: http://www.raiders.com/team/front_office.jsp

If true, I wonder if this means Al has sided with Lombardi and is keeping him around... or is this the first sign of a total cleaning house in Personnel too?

While his presence with the Raiders pre-dated Shell's return, he and Shell were buddy-buddy with some rumors speculating that if Lombardi got fired it would be Jones and Shell running the Personnel dept. That is, until Shell got axed.

Mr. Jones

Well it makes more sense then. Lombardi is probably safe. I believe he was regarded by the media as the 'sane' member of the front office staff and and respected in league circles. Rumored to be an early candidate fir the Titans GM job, maybe he and Kiffin can work together.

There was a rumor a few weeks back that Rich Snead the current director of player personnel for the Titans could wind up in Oakland. I'm just wondering if the contracts for Lombardi and Snead expire say in May and thats when these guys will make the move.

Everything thats been written about Lombardi for the past couple months paint a picture of a guy thats just warming a seat waiting for his contract to expire. I mean when your out jogging when the new head coach is being officially introduced that can't be good.

The Moss matter: Some fans are clamoring for the Packers to trade for Oakland wide receiver Randy Moss, who turned 30 this week and is presumed to be available. But there has been almost no internal discussion of Moss by the Packers.

The trading period opens March 2 but, at this point, the Raiders appear almost directionless.

Mike Lombardi, owner Al Davis' top personnel man, reportedly has been under fire for months. Sean Jones, the former Packers defensive end who held a prominent position as a Raiders pro scout and contract negotiator, was recently fired, according to an official with an AFC West team.

The Raiders probably will hold out for at least a second-round draft choice and, under general manager Ted Thompson, the Packers have based their rebuilding on acquiring more picks.
"We're about 95, 98% complete with our scheme evaluation," McCarthy said. "We've really pushed the envelope the last three, four weeks. The best way to improve is with the people you have."

The more you read about what happened "behind the scenes", the harder it is not to hate Art Shell.

Absolutely SoCal, it is a must to separate Art Shell the player from Art Shell the coach.

If it wasn't obvious the first time around it was crystal clear this last time.

Art the player -> Great.
Art the coach -> Awful.

The thing I always come back to was his absolute inability to communicate on any level...with the players, the media and apparently the front office.
