July 8, 2007

Raiders free safety

Happy belated 4th of July to all you Raiders fans out there. Not only does that mean you got to enjoy a wonderful 4th with a nice BBQ and family, but it also means that we are only weeks away from the beginning of the 2007 season. Before training camp starts July 27th, there is still some fun to be had and last weekend was one to remember.

Last Friday, I drove up to North Lake Tahoe to watch CB/KR Chris Carr. tie the knot. Friday was a blast because all the guys went out to celebrate. I was amazed at how much Chris is a big shot in Reno. While we were walking down the street people were yelling his name, taking pictures, and when we walked into the club, the DJ announced that Carr was in the building the whole place erupted. The next morning I woke up and rented a boat. Kirk Morrison., Isaiah Ekejiuba., Thomas Howard., and some friends all went down to the lake and had a blast. Nnamdi Asomugha. would have tagged along but he is deathly afraid of water. I could not believe how blue the water was. I kept expecting to get a mouth full of salt water but the water was completely fresh. Once we finally found our way back to the docks, we went back to the hotel and got ready for the wedding.

The wedding itself was one of the best weddings I have ever been to. Chris' bride looked amazing and the best part of the whole thing was seeing how nervous Chris was. I would not stop swaying and I think he swallowed a million times in 15 minutes. It was hilarious. The reception followed and I just wish I had a camera because everyone was dancing and having a great time. Chris, Nnamdi, and Adimchinobe Echemandu. stole the show. I would pay them just to come to my wedding and dance. It didn't go on for just a couple of songs, these guys danced the whole night and had a different move for each song the DJ played. The weekend was awesome and I just want to say thank you to the Carr family and I wish you two the best of luck.

The 4th of July was also a great time. Thomas Howard. had a BBQ and a ton of the guys showed up.

Well I must be going now. I have a celebrity softball game in San Jose to play in. I went out and picked up some cleats, a mitt, shorts, wrist bands and socks. So if I am not the best player out there I will be the best dressed at least. I wish everyone a wonderful weekend and I will talk to you next week right here on Raiders.com.

So...Carr isn't gay? I'll be damned.

I've never seen such a metrosexual Raider in my life.

I don't understand all the Schweigert discord on this board; he may not be the most athletically gifted saftey, but he knows the rest of the backfields' assignments, has never bashed prior coaching staffs, is commited to the current staff, and has been, IMO, the glue that has held a young backfield together--

It's not discord. I'd love to have a beer with the guy, or hang out at one of his cooking parties, but lets face facts;

The guy is about as average as it gets, and we could do better. I like the guy, Im sure he's well spoken and a leader...Thst doesnt mean we wouldnt be better off with someone else opposite of Huff.

Some Raider fans don't love all players. I've seen Stu miss enough tackles to know he could be upgraded. And for a guy touted as a 'ball hawk' he has what? 2 INT's in 40+ career starts?

Rose colored glasses sometimes get strapped on pretty tight.

I kind of put guys like Brayton and Schweigert in the same boat. They've got all the hustle and desire and work ethic and attitude to make up for the lack of talent... the only thing holding them back now is their inability to make a play... neither really has the instinct to make it like Ted Bruschi or Zach Thomas... and in my book instinct is one of those either you got it or you don't type deals...

Agreed SoCal.

We didnt bring in Frampton, Branch, Ward, move Bing back to safety and go balls out to sign Darius because of Michael Huff. That I can gaurantee.

You can always find room for a nice locker room guy and decent player like Stu on your team, but I bet we'll always be looking to upgrade if he's our starter.

Let Stu play SS with Huff playing free, and I think we'd see an improvement. Less ground for the man to cover. The angles would be simpler. He may not be a crushing hitter, but neither is Huff. It could work out pretty well, I believe.

As for his lack of INTs, come on now. He's the centerfielder in a defense that gets lost unless they're playing cover-1. You can't ask a white guy to cover the entire back half of the secondary and expect him to make plays. That's asking a helluvalot of anybody.

Ah. Maybe he is.

Well for one thing, instead of WR's and TE's being worried about getting hit at the ankles, we'd have OG's and RB's guarding their shoe tops :D

He Who Tackles Looking at The Ground may not be my favorite player, but he definitely gets props for always hanging around with a bunch of LB's... Our 2008 starting LB trio to boot (that's right I said it)...

OK - this is funny, really funny. It's the classic, now truly non-pc, Skelton joke from the radio show.

Black men hate boats. Not sure why that is...

Wasn't the "shrimper" in Forrest Gump a black dude? Just sayin'!

As for Stu, I agree that he's about as average as they come. Nice guy but I want better football players on our Raiders. Whatever that takes, IM IN.

I could not believe how blue the water was. I kept expecting to get a mouth full of salt water but the water was completely fresh.

And yet nobody caught this little gem from our resident interior design/head-cracking FS?

Yo, Stu... it's a friggin' lake bud. No salt water.

So what you're saying Natty is that Stu may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer after all?

Let's just say I'm less than thrilled with the idea of the guy making the coverage calls in our secondary when his biggest fear when staying at a hotel near the ocean is what the salt walter in the shower will do to his luxurious curls.

I'm glad we're bringing in competition at safety, although I have a feeling some of these bodies are going to be more valuable on special teams.

Yep, Stu missed tackles. So did every other player in the secondary, and on the defense. He's an average player. I can live with that. Hey, if we can add an Ed Reed to the team, swell. But I am a lot more concerned about DE and DT.

Stu gets kicked around a lot by fans, but I can't remember watching too many games and thinking, 'this guy is the problem.' I DID think that when watching Brayton, and watching our DT's get pushed around.

For me, Huff is a good strong safety but he would be a playmaker at the free spot. Stu is adequate back there but not spectacular. So what do we do? Huff provides good coverage skills something that I am looking for in one of the other strong safety candidates. If we find that then I would be in favor of moving Huff to centerfield. Right now, Huff's coverage ability trumps the move to FS in my opinion.

Hard to argue. Any guy who can man up on Gates & Gonzalez is probably best left at that assignment. Might prove hard to find another safety who can accomplish that feat.

Now, if we could find a Sam backer who could do it...
Well, once a lot of boats showed in in Africa and it didn't work out so well.
So is that why I can never get black chicks to let me use cuffs or shackles in bed?
