Falcons to trade QB Schaub to Texans

By Adam Schefter
NFL Analyst

(March 21, 2007) -- A trade that has been speculated on for over a year is now completed.

By day's end, the Atlanta Falcons will trade backup quarterback Matt Schaub to the Houston Texans, according to NFL sources. The Texans will surrender a second-round draft pick, and there could be other compensation involved.

The trade has massive ramifications. The Texans have their quarterback of the future, which David Carr no longer is. The Falcons are reaffirming their faith in Michael Vick, who now also needs a new backup. And the Texans are out of the Brady Quinn Derby, leaving the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins as possible landing spots.

The trade, once officially completed, validates the Falcons' commitment to starting quarterback Michael Vick, whom new Atlanta head coach Bobby Petrino told the first time they met, “You're my guy.”

Since then, Petrino and Vick have been working together closely on an almost daily basis, prepping for the coming season.

The Falcons, who quietly had been entertaining offers for Schaub this off-season, had tendered their backup quarterback a $2 million offer, meaning that any team that signed him to an offer sheet would have to surrender first- and third-round draft choices to the Falcons. Of course, the Falcons also could always trade Schaub, and that is the course of action the team has pursued.

The Texans will be acquiring a quarterback that has thrown only 161 career passes, 81 of which were completed, with six touchdown passes and six interceptions. But Schaub long has been considered a quarterback worthy of starting, and he was the top bargaining chip the Falcons have.

Now they've decided to cash it in.

Does this mean Carr will be in the works to be traded to Oakland?

Jay Glazer is reporting a different deal:

Terms of the deal:

Swap of number 1s this year.

2nd rounder 2007
2nd rounder 2008

By the way, if those trade terms hold up, it may help us.

By making that deal, Atlanta has the ammo to move way, way up in the draft.

Maybe to #2 to take CJ, if Raiders take Russell.

And if that's the case, it wouldn't surprise me if Tampa would think about moving to #1 to guarantee CJ. I don't buy the notion that Tampa wouldn't trade with Oakland. Why not?

Some in this forum have hoped for the Carr-to-Oakland scenario but not me. David Carr, for all his talent, hasn't produced nearly enough in my book to warrant him coming to Oakland. Obviously right now he's better than what we've currently got behind center but his upside is limited. Indecisive and inconsistent are not characteristics I want leading my team.

I'll take my chances on Russell or Walter.

I'd rather have Carr than Scaub - FWIW
Houston = Arizona = Detroit

It would take #6, both of their 2nd rounders, and one of next year's 2nd rounders to move up to #1 per the chart.

Would you take it?

Even if they offered less than what the chart said, and only offered a 3rd next year, I'd take it.

1.8
2.1
2.7
2.12

Just this year. And could probably still get Quinn. I'd do it in a second. In a nanosecond.

And Carr could be part of that deal. Doesn't excite me, but could make the deal work.

This is the kind of trade down that would make sense for the Raiders. We still need a bunch of football players...if we could still get Quinn and all those picks it might not be a bad thing. You know the caveat, the draft is the Mother of all Crap Shoots"...We still might be able to parlay those picks into Lynch.

Still I think after it's all said and done Al stays put and takes Russell.

Sign me up.

Ship a third for Carr, and then trade DOWN to get all those second rounder's in a relatively deep draft.

Add five starters on the first day... ;)

Then all of our college coaches would be right at home with all of our college players. We're already one of the youngest teams in the NFL and it looks like we're getting younger.

FALCONS GET GOOD STUFF FOR SCHAUB

Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports that the trade that sent quarterback Matt Schaub from the Falcons to the Texans involves not one but two second-round picks, plus a swap of first-round picks in 2007.

The Falcons held the No. 10 pick in round one, and the Texans held the No. 8 pick.

In all, it's a good haul for the Falcons. No one was going to give them a one and a three for Schaub. But to get two twos and a two-spot upgrade in the top ten is huge -- especially since it puts them in striking distance to make a deal that would put them in position to draft someone like Adrian Peterson or the one guy who could make the locals forget about Mike Vick: Calvin Johnson.

I guess this kind of puts a crimp in Tampa's plans to hold the Tejans hostage for the rights to Jake Plummer...

Personally, I think two second round picks and a swap of 1sts is alot to pay for a player with only a couple of starts under his belt... I dunno about Kubiak man, one year he pushes to give Carr the big contract extension, the nexy year he buys somebody elses backup QB at credit card rates...

If anything, aquiring Shaub at this price puts Carr in the buyers market IMO... Considering the salaries Carr is set to pull down the next couple of years if the Tejans keep him, I'd be surprised if they could get a 5th rounder for him in trade... I wouldn't be shocked if they flat out cut him to take advantage of the loophole this year that allows them to spread the cap hit over the next couple of years...

Dont shoot the messenger, but apparently:

David Carr's little brother post's at the Texan's fan forum, and has been telling people that a Raider deal is in the works and Carr would be excited about being closer to home...

This story came out a little before the Schaub deal, and its spreading through RF.net like wildfire...

I dont know if its got any juice, but we'll see.

Lose Carr and this would suit me just fine.

Passed on Vince Young, Bush and Leinart. And some people think Huff was a bad pick. They should have taken Bush or Vince at the that time. Dom Davis didnt even play last season and Carr wasnt the answer.

I've been following it for awhile myself, here's the link to one of his lil bro's threads for those interested... In the other people trash is anothers treasure category, from reading over the past month, I've been able to cleverly deduce that Carr's about as popular on their boards as Anthony Dorsett was on Raiders BB's...

Now I'm spooked cause the Texans are giving up basically pick #39, #100 (the difference between #8 and #10) and a future 2nd rounder. I got to think they're going to wanna screw somebody out of a day 1 pick for Carr seeing as how they gave up so much for Schaub. I hope it ain't us.

I believe that to be BS. The guy they're talking about (Hulk75) is 26 years old and ives in Santa Cruz, CA.

Carr has one brother, Derek, who is a lot younger than Carr (15 and a QB in HS).

That board is going nuts because Cold Pizza said a trade is in place for Carr once the Schaub deal finalizes

Wow great find. I will not be suprised if this happens. If we can get a former #1 pick and CJ, then i will be a happy man. Lets be honest as amazing as JR is, CJ is more special. He will be a factor day one and a target for Kiffin for years to come. I hope we dont pass on the next Manning but a flop at #1 would set us back 5 more years... almost every year their is a new "next best ever QB". Leinart, Young, Cutler, JR, Brady and even Brohm next year... lets not act like this is our last chance to draft one. Hell id even be down to pick up Troy Smith in round 4 as a third stringer if this happens.

Doesn't one of our coaches have some kinda history with Carr?

BTW, did Casserly put the kybosh on the Texans business dealings when he left or something? What a laugher of a trade...

From the looks of it, Kubiac is someone Al can.... uhh... do business with :D

You may be being sarcastic, but I'll bite. ;)

Kiffin began his coaching career at Fresno State, his alma mater, where for two seasons (1997-98) he worked with the quarterbacks, wide receivers and defensive backs.

Kiffin was a quarterback at Fresno State for three seasons (1994-96), where he was coached by current University of California Head Coach Jeff Tedford. He earned his bachelor's degree in leisure service management from Fresno State in 1998.

So When Kiffin was there working with Qb's.

David Carr in (1997) As a true freshman, saw action in four games ... was the backup to starter Billy Volek ... completed 5-of-11 passes for 53 yards in a reserve role -

In 1998 Carr split time at the helm with Billy Volek, playing in seven games and racking up 228 yards through the air & had his top game of the season at home against Hawaii, completing 7-of-10 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown & totaled 53 yards against TCU, going 3-for-5.

And oh yeah, he has another brother, so who knows...
