Per ESPN....

Don't know what to say... Just when we look like we're on the right path.... Laughing stocks be Thy name...

Supposedly, Sark doesn't believe he's ready to be a head coach...

Raiders = Charlie Brown
Sark = Lucy pulling the ball away

Short of the Pats OC coming aboard, looks like the Ryan for HC fans will get their wish...

Of course, we now look like total assholes in the process....

Fuck. No doubt we low-balled him because we're still on the hook next year to Shell for $2 million bucks.

Man i hope AL throws the bank at Norm Chow or The dude form the Pats to clean this mess up.

Norm Chow? Hahaha. He'll never come here.

Denny Green doesn't want the job. Sark doesn't want the job. Payton didn't want the job. Whisenhunt?

I haven't seen this on the ESPN ticker or heard it so I'm hoping HB ODed on some kind of cocoanut juice.

Jesus. Another fucked coaching search.

Oh fuck I just saw it...it's true.

We're fucked.

If I had to take a guess, I'd say enough people contacted Sark and convinced him this wasn't the best environment to get a career started, ala Sean Peyton....

Hope everyone has thick skin because we're going to be made fun of to no end... I know I'd be having a field day if another team topped off a drama filled season by face planting like this... I wish Al would just enpower a strong GM and let him conduct business... We look like dopes during every coach search...

It was reported on ESPN.

Sark wasnt my A1 choice, but if we cant get a QB coach from the NCAA as a head coach...We are the official laughing stock of the league.

Yeah, this is starting to get really ridiculous.

It gives legs to the whole "no one wants the Raiders' HC job" line of thinking, and that fucking sucks.

This is rally the rock bottom of rock bottom.

A fucking college asistant turns down an NFL head coaching job?

OMG...I am totally shocked. I don't know what Davis did or didn't do but my guess is that when it came to talking turkey about the contract and money that Al came with a low ball offer and the typical Raider 2 year deal with a club option for a third and the young man said "fuck you".

I'm sure what HBoy said above is partically true too. People probably convinced Sark that taking the Raiders job could hurt his future.

So now what? Fassel? Just give the job to Denny Green? What other useless retread is still around. I'm disgusted. Same shit different year. We won;t have a head coach until March. Rob Ryan anybody. We probably have no choice now. Fuck me. I hate my life.

Maybe. But he was in Alameda all day Wednesday and Thursday. I just have a gut feeling we low-balled him with some $800,000 dollar a year offer and he's sitting there saying the last guy was making $2 million. Him and Kiffin are probably making 300 or 400 hundred thousand at SC.

Ryan may be able to sucker his buddy McDaniel into leaving the Pats. A 30 year old HC. Wow.

Yeah this is some bullshit. I have to hope at this point that the Pats lose and we can interview the other young guy. If not we HAVE to make Ryan the HC and i guess it would be trestman as OC.

Maybe Ryan can convince the Pats OC he is close with that you can succeed in Oakland by pointing out his defense, and begging! And maybe Ryan will happily take the back seat to this guy. Who knows were most likely fucked.

I dont understand Al Davis & the money he offers...if he wants to turn this franchise around why does he refuse to pay? It doesnt make ANY sense at all...you pay for what you get PERIOD...

I dont mean to offend anyone here or sound harsh or what not...but I refuse to belive the Raiders will EVER succeed again till Al Davis dies or gives up his position...

I want to hire Rob Ryan anyway...Sark wouldnt have bothered me either...but now if we hire some other bum I will be PISSED!

Maybe. But he was in Alameda all day Wednesday and Thursday.

Unfortunately, the time spent in Alameida may have also given him an idea of just how intrusive Al was going to be... or he could have become totally overwhelmed by the very definition of the pressure a head coach faces....

This just makes signing any free agents even more difficult than it was going to be to begin with... I'm afraid things just aren't going to change till Al steps away from the dinner table...

As a fan, you just wonder what exactly it's going to take to get Davis to pull his head out of his ass.

Apparently Davis isn't taking responsibility for getting his ass kicked on the field, otherwise he would have changed his ways by now. You figure his decision to remove the rest of the FO from this year's coaching search could have been a result of his belief that guys like Lombardi got in his way last year. You just wonder how he's going to spin this one... Maybe he'll claim it was the media's fault for handing Sarkisian the job... the timing is interesting considering USC's big recruiting weekend starts tomorrow.

This probably isn't the best place to say this, but I still think promoting RR is the best and most realistic option for this team... and has been for the last 2 weeks. Nobody is going to want this gig until somebody turns this place into a winner... Could have saved a lot of face by promoting RR weeks ago... Let's hope we Davis doesn't do this same song and dance next week with that OC from New England.

Here's some comments from Sark...

"I was presented with a tremendous opportunity and experience of interviewing with Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders for their head coach position. I thank them for their interest in me. While the job was never offered to me, at this time in my career I've told them I want to stay at USC. I strongly believe that the Raiders job is a great opportunity for whomever their next head coach is going to be.

"My goal is to be a head football coach in college and USC is the best place for me to attain that goal. I'm extremely fortunate to work at such a great university for a head coach in Pete Carroll who allows me to strive and achieve at the highest level."

Raiders coaching candidate Sarkisian rejects offer

By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

In a strange twist that left the Oakland Raiders jilted by their first choice to succeed Art Shell, Southern California quarterbacks coach Steve Sarkisian on Friday evening rejected the team's offer to become its next head coach.

League sources who confirmed the move by Sarkisian gave no reason for his decision. The Raiders had offered a contract longer than the two-year deal Shell signed but further details were not available.

The presumptive front-runner for the Oakland vacancy for much of this week, Sarkisian interviewed on Wednesday with team officials for the second time in two weeks. He then flew back to Los Angeles, but returned to the Bay Area on Thursday for another round of interviews.

In fact, the Raiders even interviewed Southern California offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, who was Sarkisian's choice to be his No. 1 offensive assistant, on Thursday. That prompted speculation that the club was close to finalizing a deal with Sarkisian.

Sarkisian, 32, served as the Oakland quarterbacks coach in 2004 and, while he has not been a coordinator or head coach, he fit the mold of the kind of coach owner Al Davis has traditionally sought. Davis typically looks for candidates whose expertise is on the offensive side of the ball, and who are young and innovative.

A former Brigham Young quarterback who played three seasons in the CFL (1997-99), Sarkisian has a limited coaching resume. Beyond his two stints at Southern California (2001-2003 and 2005), Sarkisian was on the staff at El Camino (Calf.) Junior College in 2000.

In a related matter, San Diego Chargers wide receivers coach and Hall of Fame member James Lofton, who met earlier this week with Oakland officials, withdrew his name from consideration for the job.

Beyond Sarkisian and Loton, the Raiders have interviewed current Oakland defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel. ESPN.com reported Tuesday that former Arizona Cardinals coach Dennis Green rebuffed overtures from Oakland officials to arrange an interview.

It is not known if Oakland will expand its search now or simply work from the pool of current candidates.

According to this, Carroll "competed to keep Sarkisian"...

USC assistant head coach Steve Sarkisian, who had been the leading candidate to become coach of the Oakland Raiders, said Friday that he had withdrawn his name from consideration and would remain at USC.

"I know I'm a very strong candidate for the job and I know it's a wonderful opportunity to be a head coach in the National Football League for the Oakland Raiders," Sarkisian said. "But I'm not going to go for it. I'm not going to take it. I'm going to stay."

Sarkisian, 32, was the Raiders quarterbacks coach in 2004. He had interviewed with Raiders owner Al Davis for three days over the course of more than a week.

"The interviews with Al Davis and the Raiders have been unbelievable," Sarkisian said. "They really challenged me not only about how to run an organization but also about what I want and what I want to achieve and what my goals are. And I've always wanted to he a head college football coach.

"I think USC is the best thing for me right now to achieve that."

USC Coach Pete Carroll said he competed to keep Sarkisian and was elated that he would remain with the Trojans. Carroll declined to comment about salary increases or other incentives that were offered to Sarkisian.

"It's a huge statement about Sark being clear about what he wants to do with his career and work toward his goals," Carroll said. "He's clear that he's set his sights on being a head coach in college football. He's equipped and prepared to do that. It's just a matter of time."

Sarkisian said he was not offered the Raiders job but did not make his decision based on the standing of other candidates who had interviewed.

Former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel, Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and San Diego Chargers assistant James Lofton also interviewed with Davis, who fired Art Shell after a 2-14 season.

"I'm not waiting," Sarkisian said. "Our timetables are not lined up the same way with what they want to get done and what I want to get done, where I see my career and what I want to do with college football. Going to the NFL right now is not what I need to do."

"I've always wanted is to be a head football coach in college football, so to go in the NFL and the commitment it takes and what you need to do, that's taking me off my path of what I really want. I think SC is the best place for me right now. . . . I've been to the NFL. I did it once and I knew what I wanted and I came back."

Sarkisian said he would not rule out an eventual career as an NFL coach.

"Two, five, 10 years maybe it will be different," he said. "I don't know. I just know right now the timing wasn't right."

As HBoy eluded to ealier FA's are not likly to come to Oakland -- obviously. While this was my feeling before this Sarfkisian fumble you can rest assure that players have a lot more options than coming to Oakland.

And now the moset disturbing probability of all...the #1 pick will likely tell the Raiders they won't sign with them ala John Elway and Eli Manning. I have been thinking for six weeks or more that this was a distinct possiblity and I think it's probable now.

Boy are we in deep trouble as an organization.

Doest sound like he was very confident in his own abilities at the next level IMO. Maybe this is a blessing in disguise?
