Safety McCree inks deal with Chargers
March 12, 2006
The Chargers took a step toward improving their secondary last night, signing safety Marlon McCree to a five-year contract.
A five-year veteran, McCree, 29, led the Carolina Panthers with 88 tackles and had three interceptions last season.
He will likely challenge free safety Bhawoh Jue for the starting spot, though Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said the coaching staff might decide to play him at strong safety.
“The versatility is big,” Smith said.
Jue, a free-agent signing last year, led all Chargers with three interceptions in 2005. The Chargers' 10 interceptions ranked 30th in the NFL, and even though the Chargers were the NFL's top run defense, their secondary was not characterized by good tackling.
McCree (5-foot-11, 202 pounds) was the first free agent to visit San Diego this offseason. While perhaps not known as a true ballhawk, he is capable of making plays on the ball and is strong against the run.
Smith said the team has not finalized plans to bring in any other players. He would not specify whom he is contemplating bringing. He did reiterate that the Chargers will not create bold headlines with their moves in free agency.
“We don't have a lot of activity,” said Smith, who prefers to build with the draft. “I'm just trying to get a few things done.”
The team is believed to be interested in bringing in another safety for a visit. The team also plans to land a cornerback to play nickel, as Jamar Fletcher is expected to depart via free agency.
