Raiders running back Dominic Rhodes was suspended today for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Rhodes played for Indianapolis for six seasons before signing a two-year, $7.5 million contract with the Raiders this offseason as a free agent. Only $1 million is guaranteed.

The suspension begins Aug. 31. Rhodes can return to the active roster Oct. 1. He is allowed to practice and play in preseason games until then.

Holy shit.

That gets the season off to a great start. Good God. Anybody see that coming?

I knew about the charge but I had thought it had been resolved with no suspension. Here is a little more..

Rhodes suspended for violating NFL's substance abuse policy

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Oakland Raiders running back Dominic Rhodes was suspended Tuesday for the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

The league does not disclose reasons for substance abuse suspensions, but Rhodes pleaded guilty in the offseason to reckless driving charges in Indiana after prosecutors agreed to drop drunken driving charges against him.

Rhodes, who spent his six years in Indianapolis, signed a two-year contract in the offseason with the Raiders that could be worth up to $7.5 million. He is expected to split time with last year's starter LaMont Jordan as the Raiders try to improve a running game that averaged 3.9 yards per carry in 2006.

Rhodes started all 16 regular-season games last season, rushing for 641 yards and five touchdowns. After backing up Edgerrin James since entering the league, Rhodes shared the job last season with rookie Joseph Addai. He has 2,274 yards rushing in his career.

Rhodes had one of his best performances in the Colts' Super Bowl win over the Chicago Bears, rushing for 113 yards in Indianapolis' 29-17 victory.

Rhodes will be able to participate in training camp and in all preseason games. His suspension will begin Aug. 31, the day after Oakland's final exhibition game, and he will be eligible to return Oct. 1, following the fourth game of the season against Miami. Rhodes will also miss games against Detroit, Denver and Cleveland.

Rhodes was pulled over by an Indiana state trooper in February for driving 81 mph in a 55-mph zone. He was originally charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and operating a vehicle with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit.

Rhodes pleaded guilty in March to reckless driving and was sentenced to 180 days in jail. But 178 were suspended and he received credit for two days.

In 2002, Rhodes was charged with domestic battery in connection with a disturbance at his home involving his child's mother, Latrina Moore. He avoided prosecution and was placed in a diversionary program and underwent mental health counseling.

Once your in the NFL substance abuse program then any sort of legal problem that involves alcohol is considered a substance abuse problem and therefore you get a strike. My understanding is the team was expecting this and even put some stuff in his contract in the event he was suspended.

I am aware of the policy just confused why it took so long. The incident happened in February.

This would not warrant a 1/4 season suspension were it his first foray into the substance abuse program. Rules prohibit the releasing of names if players in the program, but teams most often know. TheRaiders put provisions in his contract for this, and honestly I welcome the opportunity for La Mont to put up "The big one" or not.. Rhodes is getting stronger and waiting in the wings, Huggy Bear2 is hungry and if you want to crack the lineup well then everyone must perform. Bush is there too and Crockett and Justin are all trying to get the gig. Not a bad thing - if it means a player with something to prove.

Crap... Not that it was unexpected...

Rhodes suspended... Jordan, Fargas and Bush all coming off injuries...

At this rate, we're going to see a lot of three wideout, single back sets with Justin Griffith back there...

::says prayer for Michael Bush's quick recovery::

I am aware of the policy just confused why it took so long. The incident happened in February.

The road to suspending him would have started not when he was arrested but when he plead quilty to reckless driving. It then took awhile for them to render a decision. The did. He no doubt appealed it. Then they shot down the appeal and now its finally announced.

Well on the bright side, we lose him in undoubtedly our easiest 4 game stretch of the season. I wouldn't be so quick to rush Bush back unless he's near 100%. I think Huggy and LJ barring any serious injuries will be more than serviceable.

::says prayer for Michael Bush's quick recovery::

Technically speaking he's probably 100 percent or close right now(remember the extra wait into training camp was to be on the safe side). I'm hoping he gets acclimated quickly. Rhodes=useless at this point.

I wasn't expecting anything from Rhodes... but if this lites a fire under Al's ass to go get Corey Dillon or somebody, I won't be surprised to look back on this 9 months from now and say what a blessing in disguise.

Might mean a 4 game stay of execution for Zack Crockett.

I hope not. If Crockett makes the opening day roster then his entire base salary for the year is fully guaranteed. Paying this guy $820,000 to touch the ball 8 times in a 4 game span would be crazy.

Cleveland, Denver, Detroit & Miami

With our defense, If we are relying on Rhodes to be the deciding factor in beating the Browns, Lions and Dolphins...

We'z in deep doo-doo

We should be able to beat those 3 teams with , well...with Bones in the backfield :D

Good thing?

We got a bye week 5... which will give us 2 weeks to determine and evaluate our RB's the 1st 4 weeks...

Theres no reason this team shouldnt be 3-1 heading into the bye...

Wait, fuck the Broncos.. we can beat them...

I retract, no reason we shouldnt be 4-0

I thought everyone did...
STFU...I thought the thing had blown over. Like AP said this shit happened in February or something. Fuck me. Not the way to get shit started off on the right foot. Damn it.

I wonder if the Queefs helped us out by holding Green so long - He'll be in worse shape for games 4 than if he'd been there the whole time.

I recall reading about the incident earlier this year. If there is a bright side, it's that the Raiders already knew about it and that both Rhoades and the team are moving forward--

4 games?

I might be biased, but I am having a hard time equating drinking too much and peeing on one's self to being busted for steroid use.

I'm not. Cause thats what happens when your already in the substance abuse program. Rhodes obviously pissed hot for something sometime within the past 2 or 3 years of his SB arrest. If your in the program you better not get arrested for anything associated with drugs or alcohol.
